September 1993

Dear friends,

Mozambique is preparing for its first multi-party elections, now scheduled for no earlier than June 1994. Though a peace accord was signed between the Frelimo government and Renamo in October 1992, Renamo continues to present obstacles to fully implementing the agreement. United Nations troops have begun to arrive, and thousands of Mozambican refugees are returning to reclaim their farms and businesses.

Despite these historic events, it has become increasingly difficult to sustain a local support group. I am writing on behalf of the Los Angeles Support Network. We have had a small group of interested people who provided information about Mozambique to our local community. While we have had some success over the past five years, we cannot continue to function at the same level of activity. Two of our most active members, James Pfieffer and Rachel Chapman, have been in Mozambique since January, working in a rural health clinic for the Seattle-based Mozambique Health Committee. Other members, faced with family and career demands, have been unable to maintain the level of activism we had in the past. The national Mozambique Solidarity Office, which provided us with a regular newsletter and other supports, now relies on volunteer efforts to publish our newsletter, Baobab Notes. The difficulty of sustaining these kinds of organizations is underscored by the recent closing of the Africa News Service's biweekly publication AfricaNews.

We ask that you continue to support us by subscribing to Baobab Notes, Mozambique Solidarity Office, 343 Dearborn, Suite 318, Chicago, IL 60604. The cost is $10 a year, or $5 for low income supporters. There are also individuals in the Los Angeles area who will carryon Mozambique support work. Do keep in touch if you share our interest. We still have literature on Mozambique, and a number of T-shirts as described on the enclosed flyer.

(over) We also recommend the following sources for ongoing information on Mozambique:

Mozambiguefile, an excellent source of information, is published monthly in English by the Mozambique News Agency (AIM), C.P. 896, , Mozambique. Subscriptions are $24 a year.

Southern Africa Report, is published six times a year by the Toronto Committee for Links between Southern Africa and Canada, 427 Bloor St. W, Toronto, M5S 1X7, Canada. Subscriptions are $18 a year.

- The Washington Office on Africa, 110 Maryland Ave., NE, Suite 112, Washington, D.C. 20002, is an important group lobbying for African issues. They provide regular legislative information, and publish Washington Notes on Africa.

- The Mozambique Health Committee (recently renamed Health Services International) can be contacted at P.O. Box 85234, Seattle, WA 98145, or at Box 1227, Mutare, Zimbabwe.

Thank you for your past interest. I hope we can count on your continued support for Mozambique.
