WHAT CAN CRICKET OFFER YOUR SCHOOL TEACHER RESOURCE PACK

Be the best you can be | 02920 419 341 ashes challenge 03

On the 8th July 2015 the first test of the 2015 Ashes series starts in . is a series of cricket matches that has been played between England and Australia since 1888. It is one of the biggest events on sports world stage. This is the second time that the home Ashes series has started in Cardiff, the first was in July 2009. Currently the Ashes are held by Australia after winning the 2013/1014 series in Australia.

Cricket, along with other sports, has a duty to ensure that all pupils in Wales can improve and develop their physical literacy skills. This will improve the health of the nation and the individual’s quality of life.

The pack has been developed to not only introduce cricket to schools, but to link with the needs of the National Curriculum in the following ways:

• Delivering a high quality sports experience through cricket.

• Using cricket as a way to engage pupils in literacy skills, especially boys, who in Wales, are notably under achieving in this area.

• Delivering cross curricular work linking with the Numeracy and Literacy framework.

• Using cricket to develop the ICT skills of pupils.

Be the best you can be | 02920 419 341 delivery of high quality sport experiences through cricket

The Cricket Wales “Ashes Challenge” programme is committed to delivering High Quality Sport Experiences, as explained in the PE & School Sport (PESS) Dragon Multi Skills pack.

There are eight areas to look at. This programme will ensure that the following areas are delivered by Cricket Wales.

ENJOYMENT Sessions are planned and delivered so that children enjoy them and want to take part. They are challenging, yet success is achieved.

HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLES Regular opportunities are provided to develop strength, stamina and flexibility which contribute to their health and well-being. The importance of rest to balance the demands of activity with a healthy lifestyle is demonstrated.

CONFIDENCE Create a positive can do attitude. No one makes mistakes on purpose; making mistakes is a necessary part of learning. Children’s contributions 03 are valued.

UNDERSTANDING Children know and understand what they are trying to achieve and are involved in every aspect of the activity.

SKILLS Children have the opportunities to develop, practise, consolidate, adapt and apply their skills. These also include personal, social and emotional skills such as communication, problem solving, leadership and teamwork. This will involve taking different roles within the sessions.

FULFIL POTENTIAL Encourage children to achieve their best by attending regularly, practising in their own time and finding out further information on the activity.

THINKING AND DECISION-MAKING Encourage children to make their own decisions on what they are going to do, make choices when playing, reflect on their performance and how can they improve.

ETHOS Ensure that the environment is safe and welcoming, set out expectations so that children know what is expected and celebrate children’s achievements. Set high expectations for all children, raise their aspirations and increase their determination to succeed. Provide a positive role model for the children.

These can take place not only in curriculum time, but in after school clubs and links with clubs.

People taking part in cricket are often interviewed and pupils will have possibly seen some of these. It can be built into the cricket programme and used around any game played. This has been linked to the Cricket Sixes game introduced in the pack.

USING IPADS The interviews could be filmed and then edited and put together with highlights from the game. If linked with the Cricket Sixes game filming of the match could be undertaken by the batting side, providing a role for the players not batting and umpiring.

The challenge for the team could be to produce a two minute film of their game including the interviews.
