How John Wickrestored My Faith in Violent Movies How John Wick Restored My Faith in Violent Movies BY STEPHANIE ZACHAREK PUBLISHED: OCTOBER 29, 2014 could be a skewed conception of what they think here’s too much violence in movies today audiences now expect. We’ve been conditioned to -- too much of the wrong kind, though if you believe action is more exciting when it’s diced to asked me what the “right” kind is, I would bits and presented to us in a choppy mosaic. When only be able to tell you that I know it when I I’ve complained about this, action-movie fans have Tsee it. Chad Stahelski and David Leitch’s John Wick -- often taken that “Listen here, little lady” tone with in which Keanu Reeves plays a former hit man lured me: “Well, that’s what a fight or a car chase is like back to his old life by a savage murder -- is brutal as when you’re right inside it.” The so-called immersive hell, a panoply of stabbings and shootings, stranglings experience has come to mean more than visual logic. and If the event clubbings, being that you depicted is almost chaotic, the certainly filmmaking wouldn’t has to want to be, too. take your That’s mother not the to see, way Sam provided Peckinpah, she isn’t Brian De Ma Barker. What John Wick brings made not by some guy who’s most comfortable back to action movies is the sense of violence as a when fixated on a video monitor, but by barbarous ballet deserving a long take -- who wants people who actually know how to move. to watch a grand pas that’s gone through the visual Stahelski, the movie’s director, and Leitch, its woodchipper? But even well-choreographed joints and muscles and nerves work in tandem, action sequences aren’t always shot and edited as beautiful in their very imperfection -- but I would clearly as they ought to be. That’s not necessarily out call it specific, planned and executed in a way that the of ineptitude on the part of directors and editors; it camera can easily follow. It’s that’s most wrenching: The camera follows a always possible to tell who’s coming from where, trail of bloody smudges to the spot where Wick is even if you can’t see the specific “who” in question: just waking up; the puppy had used the last bit of In one gruesomely witty sequence, set in a men’s spa, her strength to crawl close to him. Because, when a filmmaker knows what he or she is doing, it can be like dance? Because, seemingly paradoxically, the best violent movies are so full of life that they make me feel more alive? Or am I really just kind of twisted, the way millions of us seem to be? John Wick, a mainstream entertainment that’s heavily flawed and remarkable at once, answers none of those questions definitively for me.

Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM 44 / wfmag.cc Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM BIG LICENCE Inside the tiny studios making games based on giant Hollywood properties WRITTEN BY AARON POTTER hile there’s definitely an upside to making a game based on a highly revered film, TV, or comic book, for the longest time, development teams working on licensed video games did so knowing that it came with a certain stigma attached. Known in industry circles for having much tighter production schedules and deadlines, games based on recognisable properties have long been synonymous with poor quality and a broad streak of cynicism. Of course, not all licensed games are bad. Rocksteady’s Arkham series gave players the thrill of being Batman; 2014’s Alien: Isolation recreated the aesthetic of Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie in painstaking (and chilling) detail, and the recently released Fallen Order has been praised in some quarters as the best Star Wars game from EA to date. But for every one of these home runs, there’s a dud like the assorted Iron Man tie-ins from 2008, or the widely derided Aliens: Colonial Marines, released in 2013. Whether they’re good, bad, or indifferent, triple-A licensed games will always exist in some capacity. But as we enter an era of gaming where more and more creatives are breaking away to form smaller studios, we’re now seeing what can happen when tiny teams get to work on some of the most famous IPs in the world. One such team is Illfonic, a Colorado-based developer currently working on the PlayStation exclusive Predator: Hunting Grounds, due out later this year.

BLOODSHOT, arriving in theaters in 2017, will kick off the five-picture plan leading to HARBINGER WARS and will be directed by David Leitch & Chad Stahelski (John Wick) from a script by Jeff Wadlow (Kick Ass 2) and Eric Heisserer (Story of Your Life). Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe fromOriginal Film (The Fast and the Furious franchise) and Dinesh Shamdasani from Valiant Entertainment will produce the film. Matthew Vaughn and Jason Kothari will serve as executive producers. HARBINGER will follow shortly thereafter from a script by Eric Heisserer (Story of Your Life). Sony and Valiant remain tight-lipped about potential directors. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe from Original Film(The Fast and the Furious franchise) and Dinesh Shamdasani from Valiant Entertainment will produce. Both BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER will be followed by sequels before the title characters confront each other head on in HARBINGER WARS—a motion picture directly inspired by Valiant’s critically acclaimed 2013 comic book crossover of the same name. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the five- picture HARBINGER WARS initiative for Sony Pictures. “Valiant is one of the most successful publishers in the history of comics, and Neal is one of the best action producers in the business today. • Developments in Revenge, Justice and Rape in the Cinema
Int J Semiot Law https://doi.org/10.1007/s11196-019-09614-7 Developments in Revenge, Justice and Rape in the Cinema Peter W. G. Robson1 © The Author(s) 2019 Abstract The index to the 2018 VideoHound Guide to Films suggests that under the broad heading of “revenge” there have been something in excess of 1000 flms. This appears to be the largest category in this comprehensive guide and suggests that this is, indeed, a theme which permeates the most infuential sector of popular cul- ture. These flms range from infuential and lauded flms with major directors and stars like John Ford (The Searchers (1956) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant (2015)) to “straight to video” gorefests with little artistic merit and a spe- cifc target audience (The Hills Have Eyes (1977)). There is, as the Film Guide numbers suggest much in between like Straw Dogs (1972) and Outrage (1993). The making and re-making of “revenge” flms continues with contributions in 2018 from such major stars as Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2 and Brue Willis in Death Wish. Within this body of flm is a roster of flms which allow us to speculate on the nature of the legal system and what individual and to a lesser extent commu- nity responses are likely where there appears to be a defcit of justice. One of the sub-groups within the revenge roster is a set of flms which focus on revenge by the victim for rape which are discussed for their rather diferent approach to the issue of justice.
