Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 11, 2018

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, . Amen.

From Father Phil

My Dear Parishioners,

In church, at , we frequently hear the word “death” used. This is the case when the priest at the altar and with arms outstretched ex- claims, "The mystery of faith," and the congregation replies,

"We proclaim your Death O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again."

I sincerely hope that familiarity does not breed contempt. Rather, I hope that we are aware how painful many circumstances of dying and death might be.

I woke early on Thursday and prepared to celebrate mass at 7.00.am. When I heard the news of the shooting in Thousand Oaks, California, just a few minutes before Mass; I felt rage. My is that we do not get so used to death that it becomes commonplace. At the time of Jesus’ crucifixion was commonplace. The historian Josephus records one day when hundreds were publicly put to death in the excruciating way of Je- sus.

As the people of God may we work actively and courageously with people of good will and pray unceasingly for an end to death by senseless and unnecessary gunfire. With hearts and minds sensitive to the pain of those snatched away traumatically from family and friends violently, let us pray...

“A death is considered traumatic if it occurs without warning; if it is untimely; if it involves violence; if there is damage to the loved one’s body; if it was caused by a perpetrator with the intent to harm; if the survivor regards the death as preventable; if the survivor believes that the loved one suffered; or if the survivor re- gards the death, or manner of death as unjust.”

-Wortman & Latack (2015).
