Tholpavakoothu,theancientart-formoftheshadowpuppet theatreofKerala,providesacontinuationtotheoraltradition throughtheperformingarts.AcompoundofthreeMalayalam words,thol-leather,pava-doll,andkothu-play,thisritual performanceisbelievedtohaveoriginatedintheninthcentury. Performancesareheldbehindastretchedtransparentcottoncloth screenwithhangingoillampsservingasthebacklightrequiredto casttheshadows.ThenarrativeisdrawnmostlyfromHindu scriptures.Shadowsaredeftlycastwiththehelpofpunchedand paintedleatherpuppetsposingaslegendarycharacters.The dramaiscompletedbytheaccompanyingtraditionalstyleof narrationcombinedwithsinging.

Typicallymadefromdeer,goatorbuffaloskin,thepuppets continuetobepaintedinvegetabledyes.Varioushand-made punchescreatefiligreetypecutworkmotifsontheleather.The leadpuppeteer,aPulavarorscholar,iswell-versedinboth vernacularandSanskritliterature.Hemustalsobeaskilledpuppet makerandperformer.TheKeralastyleofpuppetmakingisonthe declineandpresentlypracticedbyveryfewfamiliesresidinginthe PalakadandThrissurdistrictsofKerala.Intricateworkmanship, numerouspunchesandadarkercolourpalette,maketheKerala puppetsdistinctlydifferentfromtheircounterpartsfromthe neighbouringregions. Theycanbefoundonwallsofmonasteries,templesandpalacesacross thecountry.Thehighdegreeofskillandknowledgeoftheartistshas baffledanalyststhroughtheages.Amongthemthepaintingsofthe AjantaCavesareoneoftheearliestandthemostfamous.

The earliest text dealing with the technique and theory of Indian painting is the Citrasutra in the Vishnudhamottara Purana; a text believedtohavebeenwrittenaroundthe4thcentury.Asetofrules govern the painting of the human figure, types of men, different varietiesofhairandeyes,posesofthebody,methodsofpreparingthe plastered walls, and conventions regarding the representations of gods,men,landscape,seasonsetc.Distinctionismadebetweensacred (satya,literallypure),lyrical(vainika)andsecular(nagaras).Strictrules ofproportionshouldbeadheredtointhesatya,whilethelyricalshould echodramaandmusicwiththeuseofrasa.

InKerala,superbexamplesofancientmuralpaintingscanbefound. Throughgenerations,theKeralamuralartistshavepreservedthisart. They have switched to paper and canvas helping the art form to flourish,albeitinadifferentavatar. The designers have conceived contemporary shapes for the installations,whicharebothhandpaintedandprinted.Theoriginal colour palette has been maintained while transferring the painting ontoaceramicorglassbase,capturingitforeternity. InspiredbythetraditionaldanceformofTheyyum,thisinstallation hasbeenconceivedasatotemandcreatedartisticallybyexploding andre-contextualizingthejewelleryandattiresofthisdanceform. Carvedlightweightwhitewoodhasbeendecoratedwithcolourful foilpastedonwithjackfruitgumoverthecarvedpatterns.Theyare thenoverdecoratedwithpith,beads,andmirrors.Thewooden wingsthatwouldnormallyformtheears,representSheshanag.The discsarepatternedwiththeendsofpeacockfeathersandfinished withanedgingofwoolenrope.Theconicaldiscsareusedas earrings.Thepowdercoatedmetalframehasalightsource,andties allthepiecestogethertoformonesingleinstallation.Itislefttothe imaginationoftheobservertoperceiveitasamoodlight,space divider,sculptureorsimplyaworkofart.
