The process of lava-dome emplacement through a glacier was observed for the first time after Mount St Helens reawakened in September 2004. The glacier that had grown in the crater since the cataclysmic 1980 eruption was split in two by the new lava dome. The two parts of the glacier were successively squeezed against the crater wall. Photography, photogrammetry and geodetic measure- ments document glacier deformation of an extreme variety, with strain rates of extraordinary magnitude as compared to normal alpine glaciers. Unlike normal temperate glaciers, the crater glacier shows no evidence of either speed-up at the beginning of the ablation season or diurnal speed fluctuations during the ablation season. Thus there is evidently no slip of the glacier over its bed. The most reasonable explanation for this anomaly is that meltwater penetrating the glacier is captured by a thick layer of coarse rubble at the bed and then enters the volcano’s groundwater system rather than flowing through a drainage network along the bed. Jose Burman, a South African member, died in 1995 but was not included at the time. Ginette Harrison was the first woman to climb Kangchenjunga, in 1998. Whilst not yet a member, she had started the application process for membership. She died on Dhaulagiri last year. Yossi Brain, who sent us valuable reports from South America for the Area Notes, died in an avalanche on 25 September 1999 while mountain eering with friends in Northern Bolivia. Yossi touched the lives of a lot of people, through his lively, bright, and often irreverent sense of humourwhich permeated his guiding, his books, his articles and above all his spirit. He achieved a lot in the time he had, making two different and sucessful careers, and providing inspiration to many. Ulf Carlsson was Chairman of the Mountain Club of Kenya between 1993 and 1996. He wrote an article about the Swedish mountains for the 1997 Alpine Journal and was well known to some of our members. He died in the Pamir in 1999. The dataset shows con- straints on the nature of slab-derived component to mantle source. Analyzed samples show large negative Nb and Ta anomalies, and enrichment of alkaline earth elements and Pb, which are features of typical island arc volcanic rocks. Boron contents of SVZ volcanic rocks range 2.3–125.5 ppm, exhibiting marked enrichment relative to N-MORB and OIB. Both the boron contents and B/Nb ratios of the volcanic rocks increase from the southern SVZ (SSVZ) to central SVZ (CSVZ). Fluid mobile/immobile element ratios (B/Nb, Ba/Nb, Pb/Nb, and K/Nb) are used to examine slab-derived com- ponent to mantle source. -
