SCIENCE Solician Life | Volume 11 Issue 2 | December 2019 - April 2020 8 Goodbye 2010s: A Reminisce on the Scientific Discoveries of the Past Decade

As we usher in a new decade, it is important to look back on the last 10 years and appreciate the scientific breakthroughs that occurred. [ 2010 ] Australopithecus sediba

Most people are not familiar with this, but the fossil of the Australopithecus sediba is a remarkable discovery made in 2010.

Australopithecus sediba is a type of species that are part of the human family tree. The said species existed around 2 million years ago. It provides insights into the variation of hominin around the period before the genus Homo emerged. To put it simply, the discovery of A. sediba is a great help to the researchers who want to know more about the timeline that occurred before our species, Homo sapiens, appeared. [ 2011 ] Kepler 22-b planet

On December 5, 2011, an extrasolar planet located 600 light years away from Earth was discovered. This was soon named Kepler-22b, due to the fact that it is orbiting around G-type star Kepler-22. Its mass and surface composition remains unknown, and only rough estimates have been established.

Kepler-22b is the first known planet to orbit within the habitable zone of a star that is similar to the Sun. This means that potentially, its climate and other conditions are suitable for life. As of now, research is still being conducted to know more about Kepler-22b. While there is a huge possibility that it is habitable for humans, there is still no confirmation. At 600 light-years away, more research and more powerful telescopes are required in order to fully confirm whether or not this planet truly is suitable for life. [ 2012 ] Curiousity Rover

On August 6, 2012, the Curiosity Rover landed on Mars for the first time. This marks a day of success and has led to several significant discoveries. Ever since it landed on Mars, the Curiosity Rover has helped discover that there may have been water on the planet before. This information, along with the fact that mysterious cycles of methane and oxygen occur in Mars, has raised the question for some scientists: is Mars actually habitable? [ 2013 ] The Lake of Mars

Connected to 2012's featured breakthrough, an evidence that Mars could've supported life also popped up during 2013. NASA's Curiosity rover found a vanished lake on Mars, which means that there is a possibility that life existed on Mars about three billion years ago.

[ 2014 ] Added genetic alphabet

As most people know, the genetic information is encoded using the four DNA letters A, T, G, and C. But during 2014, researchers have attempted to add more to the genetic alphabet. In southern California, researchers have engineered E. coli bacteria to incor- porate two additional letters to their genetic alphabet. In addition to the G C and A T pairs, the said bacterial DNA includes the pair X and Y. [ 2015 ] First new antibiotic in 30 years

For the first time in 30 years, scientists have discovered a new antibiotic during early 2015. Through tons of effort and hardship, scientists have finally succeeded.

The antibiotic called teixobactin kills bacteria by breaking down its outer wall and prevent- ing its growth in further cells. This can help in treating patients with tuberculosis, septicaemia, and C difficiency. SCIENCE Solician Life | Volume 11 Issue 2 | December 2019 - April 2020 9 [ 2016 ] NASA's spacecraft arrives in Jupiter

After 5 years and 2.7 billion kilometers of travelling, NASA's spacecraft finally lands on Jupiter. Juno, the spacecraft, is the first human-made object to orbit Jupiter since the end of the Galileo mission in 2003.

This event has opened new opportunities for further research regarding the solar system's largest planet.

Artificial womb [ 2017 ]

Last 2017, researchers located at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia were able to make a major technological breakthrough: the BioBag. This bag is an artificial womb and through experimen- tation, the researchers were able to grow lamb fetuses in this for up to four weeks. It is a marvelous success, and the lambs started gaining weight, developing organs, and opening their eyes for the first time inside the BioBag.

This discovery is said to be a major step for premature babies, and can help them de- [ 2018 ] velop further to prevent long-term health complications related to vision, hearing, and others. Reusable rockets

In February, space company called SpaceX has successfully launched its reusable rocket for the first time. Two of the 27-engine Falcon Heavy rocket's re- usable boosters safely landed on the ground in Florida. Despite that, its core booster missed its landing pad. According to the CEO of SpaceX, the core booster hit the water at 300 miles an hour and took out two of the engines on the drone ship. Nonetheless, the project was a huge success and can open up many doors for more reusable rockets. Black hole photo [ 2019 ]

Last 2019, the first ever image of a black hole was retrieved. After many decades of strug- gles, scientists finally succeeded in capturing a black hole on camera. The black hole's mass is equivalent to 6.5 billion suns, and its distance is about 54 million light-years away from Earth. Using the Event Horizon Telescope, scientists have observed the center of the galaxy M87. In the photo, a bright ring with a seemingly perfect circle in the middle is shown. Though the im- age is slightly blurry, it shows that black holes look like what researchers predicted.

The past decade has provided the world with more information and even more questions. As the 2020s approach us, there will surely be more shocking and amazing scientific discoveries.
