Last Boeing 747-400F (LX-YCV) for Cargolux arrived in Luxembourg

On 22nd July 2008, at 9:05 (local), LX-YCV (sn: 35805 ln: 1407), the last Boeing 747-4R7F/SCD arrived at Luxembourg Airport. On 18th July, Cargolux accepted their last 747-400F at a ceremony in Seattle. The 16th Boeing is called “City of Contern”. This last 747-400F delivery marks the transition to the next generation Jumbo, the 747-8F. LX-YCV comes with a modified livery, with the traditional red, white and blue stripes fading away instead of reaching all the way to the tail. This might be a hint to a new design that will be introduced on the Boeing 747-8F.

Hercules & Transall at Luxembourg Airport

Here in Luxembourg we are quite used to a great number of Hercules and Transall doing short midday stops at the airport, but during the last two months, especially in July a lot of military traffic was seen at ELLX. As usual they were from Turkey and Greece.

Luxembourg Air Rescue - 20 years celebration (Text & Photos by Kevin MORO)

On 6th June 2008 Luxembourg Air Rescue (LAR) celebrated, on P5, it’s 20 years. LAR was founded on 18th April 1988 and operated the first rescue mission in 1989. This flight was operated with a leased Bell B206 Long Ranger.

At 16:00 the tent opened for the invited guests and the celebration started. The whole LAR fleet, consisting of MD-900/902 Helicopters and Learjets, was on display. Even the new Ambulance car was present. Drinks were served and 2 Bands were entertaining the guests. René Closter, President of Luxembourg Air Rescue, made an introductory speech and a feedback of the last 20 years of operations. During the speech, one of the helicopters (LX-HMS) had to depart for a rescue mission and came back late in the afternoon. Around 19:00 the Buffet was opened and the party began.

When I talked to a LAR pilot, he told me that LAR is considering buying a 5th and 6th MD-902 helicopter for the fleet (to be confirmed).

This map is drawn on the inside of the fuel tank on the tip of the wing of LX-TWO, showing Luxembourg and Western Europe.

Florennes: Defence Days - Arrivals (Text & Photos by Mike MORO)

This year’s edition of the Belgian Defence Days took place at the Florennes Air Force Base on 5th and 6th July 2008. Florennes is well known for being the home base of the 2nd Tactical Wing, the Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP). A lot of international teams and aircrafts were present during the weekend, including a lot of special paintings such as the Alphajet 1’000’000 hours of flight livery. On 4th July the Belgian Air Force organised a Spotter’s Day during the arrival of the aircrafts and team rehearsal. The organisation of the Spotter’s day was great. After our arrival we were transported by bus to a place close to the runway and taxiway. The price of 40€ was quite expensive but it was worth it. After most of the aircrafts arrived, the rehearsal of the flying teams began (Turkish Stars & F-16 Demo). Therefore we had to leave our spotting place, due to security regulations, and moved further away from the runway.

The Defence Days itself were impressive as well, with the F-16 demonstration and a simulated invasion and hostage rescue including F-16’s, C-130 Hercules, and ground forces. Unfortunately the announced B-52 did not attend and due to the heavy rainfalls the Patrouille de France display was cancelled.

Recent forum rumours indicated that these Defence Days might have been the last edition and that each of the Belgian Defence components will have their own event in the future. We’ll see...

On the following page are some impressions of the Spotter’s Day and Defence Days 2008.

An afternoon at Athens International Airport (Text & Photos by Mike MORO)

After our holiday in Greece, I convinced my girlfriend to go a bit earlier to the airport in the hope to catch some aircrafts. Unfortunately the heat outside was too much for us so we decided to stay inside at our departing gate. Due to the windows there is some reflection in the photos but nevertheless the Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) has some interesting traffic.

Mauritius – Spotting at the Beach (Text & Photos by Mike MORO)

During our stay at Mauritius, I had one of the most interesting spotting sessions ever. When we booked I knew that the Hotel was only 4 miles away from the airport, but I didn’t imagine that the planes would depart directly over of the lobby of the hotel (photo; departing ). The traffic wasn’t very dense, but quite interesting. Unfortunately the sun was a bit of a problem, a lot of backlight, but changing the side of the beach was helpful. I leave the rest to the photos below, but one thing is sure, I didn’t need to get up from the chair to take a photo ☺
