Granello, Ph.D., Advisor Darcy Haag-Granello, Ph.D. Jerome D’Agostino, Ph.D. Copyrighted by Michael Scott Lewis 2016 Abstract Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Games (MMORPG’s) have become increasingly common in the video gaming marketplace with conservative estimates of 19 million players worldwide. These games allow players to engage in a virtual world with hundreds of thousands of other players at the same time. The games have no definitive end and the game content continually grows by giving players more virtual world to explore creating an expanding alternate reality. For most, these games are a leisure activity or hobby, but for approximately 8-12% of MMORPG players the experience becomes problematic. As a result, online gaming addiction has become the fastest growing process addiction over the past two decades. Continued play creates real life problems such as relationship difficulties, vocational issues, health related complications, and in extreme cases, legal troubles or death from exhaustion or dehydration. Online gaming addiction is similar to chemical addiction in symptomology in areas of tolerance, withdrawal, difficulty stopping or controlling use, and negative consequences. Therefore, it is critical to more clearly understand the nature of online gaming, links to addiction, and possible underlying factors that contribute to addiction. There were several purposes underlying this study including an attempt to better understand the average MMORPG player profile, examine possible motivational factors that contribute to continued game play, and to recognize what aspects may predict online gaming addiction. Prior research conducted on understanding online gaming motivational factors includes a desire to be ii the best player (achievement), engaging with other players (social), and exploring the virtual world (immersion). Additionally, the model of dualistic passion is believed to help explain gaming motivation using the concepts of harmonious passion (controlled game play which does not interfere with life responsibilities) and obsessive passion (uncontrolled gameplay, linked to personal identity, often resulting in negative consequences). These five motivational components were the independent variables and the dependent variable was online gaming addiction. A sample of MMORPG players (N = 246) was surveyed using online portals and social media. Results indicate that the average MMORPG gamer in the sample was 28.69 years old (SD = 7.31), male (80.9%), educated with at least some college credit, and had an average income of approximately $30,000. These findings match previous research and challenges the many myths of the video gamer profile. All independent variables had a strong positive relationship with the dependent variable. A regression analysis model was significant and indicated that obsessive passion, achievement, and social were significant predictors (F(5, 240) = 63.977, p < .001; R2 = .66). Specifically, obsessive passion demonstrated the strongest correlation and prediction of online gaming addiction. Post hoc analyses highlighted gender differences and evaluated subcomponents of the independent variables. The significance of this study is that it extended the body of knowledge on motivational factors contributing to online gaming addiction and provided a significant model of predictors. Limitations of the study include generalizability, a small sample size, and potential sample bias towards more fanatical players.     Chronotopes and Social Types in South Korean Digital Gaming Stephen C. Rea, University of California, Irvine ABSTRACT This article examines a South Korean cultural chronotope from the perspective of Korea’s world-renowned digital gaming culture, including its professional electronic sports (e- sports) scene and the experiences of amateur gamers in online gaming cafés (PC bang). My analysis centers on two of Korean digital gaming culture’s recognizable social types and the spatiotemporal qualities of their play: professional gamers and the quickness em- bodied in their e-sports performances; and a specific kind of amateur PC bang gamer who is more socially isolated and whose engagement with games is slow and repetitive. I argue that through their performances in digital games’ virtual and actual-world participation frameworks, gamers orient to these social types in ways that differentially construe their relationships to semiotic depictions of places, times, and personhoods. Thinking through these orientations and their spatial, temporal, and social qualities is critical to under- standing chronotopic representations of contemporary Korea.     Press Start Non-Serious Serious Games Non-Serious Serious Games Matthew Hudson Toshiba Design Center Abstract Serious games have been shown to promote behavioural change and impart skills to players, and non-serious games have proven to have numerous benefits. This paper argues that non-serious digital games played in a ‘clan’ or online community setting can lead to similar real world benefits to serious games. This paper reports the outcomes from an ethnographic study and the analysis of user generated data from an online gaming clan. The outcomes support previous research which shows that non-serious games can be a setting for improved social well- being, second language learning, and self-esteem/confidence building. In addition this paper presents the novel results that play within online game communities can impart benefits to players, such as treating a fear of public speaking. This paper ultimately argues that communities of Gamers impart ‘serious’ benefits to their members.     Fear, Loss and Meaningful Play: Permadeath in DayZ Marcus Carter, Digital Cultures Research Group, The University of Sydney; Fraser Allison, Microsoft Research Centre for Social NUI, The University of Melbourne Abstract This article interrogates player experiences with permadeath in the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter DayZ. Through analysing the differences between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ instances of permadeath, we argue that meaningfulness – in accordance with Salen & Zimmerman’s (2003) concept of meaningful play – is a critical requirement for positive experiences with permadeath. In doing so, this article suggests new ontologies for meaningfulness in play, and demonstrates how meaningfulness can be a useful lens through which to understand player experiences with negatively valanced play. We conclude by relating the appeal of permadeath to the excitation transfer effect (Zillmann 1971), drawing parallels between the appeal of DayZ and fear-inducing horror games such as Silent Hill and gratuitously violent and gory games such as Mortal Kombat.
