Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Cherry’s Company Highway Fighter Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato When BMW throws out a design challenge, it doesn’t screw Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag around. For the R nineT Custom Project, the company chose four 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 outstanding Japanese builders to take a crack at reinventing the Roadster.

This one is the shining effort of Kaichiro Kurosu, who’s a household 27 28 29 30 31 1 2 name of Japan’s moto scene after taking home Best of Show at the New Year’s Day Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show in 2012 and 2013.

Kurosu’s Highway Fighter features modified custom chrome RevTech Billet wheels topped with Metzeler ME880 Marathon tires. The standard forks have been dropped two inches and blacked-out. The 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 rear frame, top yokes, and steering system were all modified. From Epiphany Orthodox Christmas there, Kurosu beefed up the brakes, fabricated foot controls, and threw on some ABM clip-ons.

But parts are just parts. The real show is in the bodywork, which Kurosu crafted by hand out of aluminum. Besides the stunning 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 skeletal mesh enclosure up front, he worked over the exhaust, Orthodox New Year air cleaner box, and about a hundred other details, including a downsized oil cooler to go inside the cowl, along with the oil lines and fittings. All of this comes together to form a bike even BMW could have never imagined. 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 Evidently, when Cherry’s Company accepts a design challenge, Martin Luther King Jr. it doesn’t screw around either. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Ducati 900SS Custom by Atom Bomb Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato Clay Rathburn has done a thing or two worth talking about Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag from inside his small shop in Richmond, Virginia. His Triumph 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 customs alone would turn heads on any street. Along the way, he’s even dabbled in the racing world. Most notably, he constructed the fuel tanks for Danny Eslick’s –winning Triumph 675. “I’ve always loved sport bikes, just never built one from the ground 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 up,” he said.

Then he met this Ducati.

This 900SS was a personal project, which meant a limited budget, mix-and-match parts, and a willingness to improvise. When the 31 1 2 3 4 5 6 taillight he ordered on eBay for $20 showed up, for example, and it Groundhog Day Waitangi Day (NZ) featured more angles than Rathburn had planned on, he designed the entire tail section around it. He spent more than 30 hours on the heads. To deal with the looks, which he didn’t love in stock form, he fabricated all new bodywork, including the diminutive-looking 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 4.5-gallon fuel tank. Chinese New Year Mardi Gras Ash Wednesday He then pulled some parts from a GSX-R, including a set of Showa forks and Brembo calipers. He threw an RSV wheel up front, and a rear wheel, swingarm, and shock out back. Then he fitted an Öhlins steering damper using his own Atom Bomb 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 mounts. Valentine’s Day Presidents’ Day Ducati gives a guy a lot to work with but doesn’t appear very often in the new wave custom scene. When one does show up, it’s a noteworthy event. Rathburn has produced one of the most noteworthy.

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Rough Crafts Sportster Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato Many have tried to shape-shift the tall V-twin look of the Sportster Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag into the sleek style of a classic café racer. Many have failed. Winston 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 Yeh isn’t one of the many. He’s an accomplished Harley customizer who has racked up a bunch of awards since founding Rough Crafts in 2009, including becoming the 2013 World Champion for the Modified Harley-Davidson class at the AMD 28 29 1 2 3 4 5 World Championship of Bike Building.

The Slate Hammer based on a 2012 Sportster Forty-Eight model, was commissioned by a friend of Yeh’s with just a couple of constraints: it had to have a clean look and come out a little grey. 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 “That’s pretty much it,” Yeh said. “The ideas came together fast.” This stunning take on Sporty cafés features a blacked-out engine, an S&S Super-E carb conversion, a Rough Crafts finned air cleaner, fabricated headers, and a custom exhaust by the Italian company Spark. The tank, almost unbelievably, is stock; Yeh managed to massage it into the masterpiece you see before you, complete 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 with cut-out style to really nail the classic look. Up front is a Daylight Saving St. Patrick’s Day half-fairing supplied by Glass From The Past that Yeh modified so Time Begins (US) that it sits lower and contributes to the bike’s paired-down appearance. Other details include a diamond-quilted leather seat by Back Drop of Japan, riser-less billet triple trees from Speed 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 Merchant, custom forged and anodized wheels by San Diego Good Friday Customs, and Progressive shocks. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Fuller Moto’s Norton Commando Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato You’d think after hosting the Velocity channel’s Naked Speed, Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag starting a publishing company, and putting out a couple of hefty 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 books, you’d get to rest for a minute. Not Bryan Fuller. Take this masterful Norton Commando 750, for example.

After sitting for two years, Misty Green came to Fuller Moto as a 27 28 29 30 31 1 2 frame and four milk crates full of parts. On closer inspection, the team found a piece of 2” round stock holding the frame backbone together, presumably put there to compensate for the Norton’s flexible frame. To remedy the situation, Fuller whipped up a brand new chromaly frame. Then the real work started. 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 The list of modifications includes lighter forks from a CB550 setup, custom triple trees, a pair of dirt bike hubs, a swingarm extended by two inches, a larger rear tire, new brakes and shocks, and custom bodywork.

Oh, the bodywork.

10 11 12 13 14 15 16 “I’ve been wanting to do a fairing forever,” he says, “and this was the right bike for it.” The bodywork was handcrafted out of alloy. The windshield is a trimmed reproduction Ducati “double bubble.” Fuller then put Joe Patterson on paint, Chastin Brand on pin-striping, and John Whitaker on the leather, which completes the seat, tank, and tail.

17 18 19 20 21 22 23 Fuller says the stunning Norton starts on the first kick nearly every First Day of Passover time, stops perfectly, and even sounds good. Is anyone surprised? Earth Day Go get some sleep, Bryan. You’re killin’ us.

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Bunker SR500 Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato German magazine Motorrad handed the Yamaha Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag SR500 the Moto of the Year award twice. Twice. Somehow, this 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 hasn’t made one easy to come by in the colorful land of Istanbul. When Mert and Can Uzer of Bunker Custom Motorcycles decided to use one for a commissioned customer build, they ended up 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 day-tripping 330 kilometers out of town to find it. Building the bike for a kite boarder, the Uzers decided to design for the environment; the bike would be spending its time on the rough roads of Alcati, a destination known for its great surfing. They decided a scrambler was in order. Minus the typically high exhaust pipes, the resulting SR500 sports the wide handlebar and riding 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 position perfect for someone trying to survive the sand, as well as Orthodox Easter Cinco de Mayo the lower weight aluminum parts one might need to feel confidently May Day (EU) Holocaust Remembrance Day nimble through it all. The frame has been hand-sanded down to raw metal and then 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 clear-coated to last. And the electronics are hidden under the Mother’s Day custom brown leather seat. Thanks to a battery eliminator kit, they also take up less room than the stock version.

Bonus detail? The CNC-cut handlebar clamp has the bike’s model number and year engraved into it, big and proud. There’s even a 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 rack on the side for carrying a large kite. Armed Forces Day (US) Happy riding, Turkey.

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Icon Custom Katana Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato The stock Suzuki Katana is a strange bag. It seems that it was meant Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag to be part superbike, part sport bike, and part passenger vehicle, 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 but it didn’t quite pull off any of that. It has the front end looks of a fierce racer, and the—what?—towing capacity of an F150? The bench seat looks long enough in stock form to handle three, maybe four, 26 27 28 29 30 1 2 passengers at a time. Perfect for a small family. Canada Day (CAN) It’s perhaps not the nimble ride most owners were after. Still, it had its upsides. And some people liked it. Probably.

Looking to its good side, Portland-based gear maker Icon 1000, known for its helmets, jackets, gloves, and other cycling musts, 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 decided to add one to its growing list of bike overhauls. Even with Independence Day (US) Last Day of Ramadan its optimistic view, Icon said, “Her diminutive fairings, rectangular headlight, awkward tank, and sofa’esque seat are a divisive mix.”

The team went to work anyway. Now a solo-seater, the Icon-ified New Jack Katana, according to Icon’s website, features the 1,200cc 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 motor from a Suzuki Bandit, a reinforced frame, a modern swingarm, Bastille Day (FR) and a reworked set of brakes. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Café Racer Dreams’ R80 Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato BMW’s R80ST is the street version of the R80G/S, known as the Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag world’s first adventure touring bike. The ST didn’t sell so well, 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 however, and only stayed on the market for a couple of years in the early 1980s. It’s a rare bird.

Good thing Café Racer Dreams has rare talent.

24 25 26 27 28 29 30 The CRD team has done some fantastic things to BMWs over the years, and it’s no surprise to see its skills showcased here as well. Proprietors Pedro García and Efraon Triana have always shown great taste and an eye for lines, and their sense of proportion and detail shines through on this bike that they reference without 31 1 2 3 4 5 6 metaphor as No. 59. CRD built the unusual exhaust for this one in-house, for the purpose of leaving the left side of the bike exposed to show off the single- sided swingarm. It also removed the airbox, traded out covers for more vintage versions, and moved the battery into a handmade 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 leather box positioned at the backside of the motor. To get that ultra-low front end look, an inverted set of Renthal bars was selected and finished off with Biltwell grips. The headlight, taillight, and turn signals all came from CRD’s own supply line. You can buy your own versions through its website. 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 And we wouldn’t blame you for picking up a few. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Adam Grice Triton Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato What happens when café racers become wildly popular and there’s Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag a sudden explosion of custom bikes floating around that may or 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 may not fit the description? “Café racer” becomes a catch-all term for anything on two wheels that didn’t come from a factory, and we forget what it really means: It’s combining a Triumph motor and a 28 29 30 31 1 2 3 Norton frame to get the best of both worlds. Brenda is 744ccs of pure Triumph goodness from the mid-1970s tucked into a wideline Norton Featherbed. “The bike was all there,” Adam Grice said, “but running rough. And it just didn’t look right. It had straight bars, a little fly screen, and fiberglass fuel and oil tanks. Plus a strange battery box sitting halfway along the 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 rear fender.” Labor Day (US & CAN) Grice rebuilt the engine with a multitude of new parts and Amal Mark 1 concentric 930 carbs, complete with bell mouths. Fortunately, the bike already had the Norton Roadholder forks, 18-inch alloy rims, a few Dresda bits, a SRM Classics clutch, a Boyer Brandsen ignition, 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 and a Hayward primary belt drive kit. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Clockwork’s CB750 Custom Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato You can almost see the influence of helicopter design in Samuel Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag Gertin’s work—that chunky aesthetic that somehow screams speed 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 and looks like it could beat up your horse. But then, after spending a decade working on them, the look was bound to stick in his mind and eventually find its way into his wrench. 30 31 1 2 3 4 5 Clockwork’s Fury CB750 certainly didn’t start that way. The donor All Saints’ Day bike, says Gertin, arrived as “a weird, failed attempt at a gothic -slash-.” As soon as he laid hands on it, he knew he wanted to make it something meaner.

To get there, he shortened the frame in the back, then countered the 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 move with an extended swingarm, pushing the rear wheel out past Daylight Saving Veterans Day (US) the end of the seat. Then he threw on some Progressive Suspension Time Ends (US) Remembrance Day (CAN) rear shocks paired up with beefy Suzuki GSX-R600 forks and brakes. Then he did something way cooler.

See that side cover that seems a little unusual? It’s an oil tank. To hide it 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 even more, Gertin made up a matching panel for the bike’s other side. From there, he added in some Harley-Davidson wheels, Firestone tires, and a leather and suede seat crafted by New Moto Church. To boost the performance, he rebuilt the motor completely, bored it out to 836cc, added CR29 racing carbs, and bolted up a four-into-one 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 exhaust system. To top things off, he reworked the wiring and replaced Thanksgiving Day the controls, switches, ignition, and speedo with new Motogadget parts. The color scheme is all smooth, all mellow.

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday KTM Tracker by Roland Sands Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato You may have a hard time picking a Roland Sands bike out of a Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag lineup. He doesn’t stick to a specific style. No two are anywhere 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 near alike. (In fact, he previously built a café version of the bike shown here.) What he does do, however, is build bikes that look, act, and smell like they should have been built and sold by a major 27 28 29 30 1 2 3 manufacturer. This tracker, for example, based on the KTM 690 R. We’d like to swing by a dealer and pick one up.

Why the KTM? Straight out of the box, it has ABS, Brembo brakes, and 66 horsepower. “There’s enough torque to put a smile on your 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 face,” Sands says, “but it’s tame enough to inspire confidence when pushing toward the edge.” Calling it a “street-able single,” Sands has twisted this particular build away from its more typical enduro looks into something more like an insect. It features a new subframe and swingarm, both of which were custom fabricated in airfoil-shaped tubing to match the existing frame. It also includes a 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 custom 10-section exhaust and a stubby, low-slung muffler. Besides all that, it’s just a lighter, cleaner version than the design-heavy stock job that rolls out of the factory.

It wouldn’t pass the requirements for street legality anywhere we know of, but with a few tweaks (headlight, turn signals, license 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 plate bracket, etc.), it would probably fly off the showroom floor. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Renard Ducati Café Racer Dimanche Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Domenica Lunedì Martedì Mercoledì Giovedì Venerdì Sabato In a world of monochromatic customs (which we dig, of course), it’s Sonntag Montag Dienstag Mittwoch Donnerstag Freitag Samstag nice to see a bike flooded with color once in a while, and this Ducati 日曜日 月曜日 火曜日 水曜日 木曜日 金曜日 土曜日 by Renard Motorcycles is a very welcome change of pace. When it was delivered, it was missing a few things—namely, its gauges, lights, brakes, and the top yoke. But, Uibomae said, “A Ducati bevel single…from Spain?” The rarity of the bike made the 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 effort worth it.
