Be ye sure the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation. I contacted the Rector and he very kindly supplied me with much useful information. He also revealed that a transcript of the earlier registers had been made and he readily accepted my offer to retranscribe them using a word processor. As with all documents of this nature the original should be consulted to confirm that entries have been transcribed and indexed accurately. The following specific points should be borne in mind when using the transcript: Dates All dates have been standardised as follows; day in numbers, month in three letters (abbreviated as necessary), year. Obvious errors are shown in bold. Legibility and Spelling In cases of doubt, the spelling of surnames has been checked against other entries in the index; variations in the spelling of the same surname have been noted. Indecipherable details are marked with a ?. Information which is missing due to page edge damage in indicated by ~~. Additional Information Marginal notes and comments from the Registers appear in the text or as footnotes. Illiteracy Those who made a mark in the registers are indicated by an "x" after their name. Chronological Discrepancies Entries out of chronological order by more than a week or so are in italics. Banns Names of persons whose banns were read at St Mary's Church but who were married elsewhere are included. The Index The index lists in alphabetical order all persons who were born/baptised, married, mentioned in banns and died/buried at Newtownbarry over the period 1799-1903. Where circumstantial evidence points to entries for more than one event for the same person, they have been included on the same line in the index. In the absence of any such evidence they have been listed separately. Abbreviated Christian names have been transcribed exactly as they appear in the Registers. Dates of birth and death from pre-1904 gravestones recorded by a recent youth employment project have also been included. Transcriber’s Observations Despite the introduction of new style marriage registers in 1845, Newtownbarry Parish continued to use an old style one for the Parish copy of marriage entries. Entries submitted to the Registrar General for Marriages must have been submitted in the correct format; hence family historians should be able to obtain additional information on entries of interest from the Registrar General. Entry numbering in the third combined register was discontinued in mid-century; later entry numbers are shown in 8 pt eg 770 to assist in cross-referencing. It was created on 3 May 1776 by act of council when the townlands of Ballynavorin, Ballyphilip, Ballypracus, Bolanesmore, Bolycreen, Bunclody, Cashel, Clonyhyrone, Coolatin, Coolgarrow, Corduff, Cremoge, Currane, Glanamenaugh, Glaslackin, Kamatoge, Kilmacdermot, Kilmanne, Mandoram, Myedy, Ryland and Tombrick were separated from Templeshanbo parish. It contains most of the town of the same name, originally the hamlet of Bunclody, which owes its development and name to James Barry, Sheriff of Dublin in 1572 and progenitor of the Barons of Santry. The parish covers an area of some 8200 acres and the living was a rectory in the Diocese of Ferns. The Protestant population is descended from the Cavan tenants of Lord Farnham who settled on, and cultivated, waste lands once used for sporting purposes. The Hon Barry Barry gave an acre of land for a Churchyard in 1770. St Mary's Church was built about 1775 at the cost of the Maxwell (Farnham) family. It was subsequently enlarged by means of subscription and parochial assessment to seat 400 and further added to in the early 20th century in memory of R W Hall Dare. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners granted £548 for its repair in the 1830s. John Barry gave a farm at Ryland as glebe in 1802 and the glebe-house was built in 1805 at a cost of £1104, the Board of First Fruits contributing £92. In the 1830s divine service was performed twice on all Sundays, on the principal festivals and on Thursday evenings. The Sacrament was administered monthly and on the festivals. iv MINISTERS’ INITIALS RECTORS OF NEWTOWNBARRY 1776-1778 Oliver Cary Senr 1778-1798 Oliver Cary Junr 1798-1799 Theobald Brownrigg 1799-1810 James Morgan 1810-1836 Alexander McClintock (also 1829 Clonegal) AMcC 1836-1897 John Charles Archdall JCA 1897-1901 Lambert Drapes LD 1901-1940 William Robert Baker Fry WRBF CURATES OF NEWTOWNBARRY 1822 William Stephens ws 1833-1836 John Charles Archdall jca 1835-1836 James Power jp 1870 Lambert Drapes ld 1872-1875 Henry Laurence Fry hlf 1881-1885 Francis Hoffman Battersby fhb 1885 Thomas George Montgomery Harpur tgmh 1891 Henry Laurence Langley hll 1894 Henry Fyers Crampton hfc 1895-1897 John Robert Meara jrm 1901 Arthur Hugh Carl Atkinson ahca v DETAILS OF THE REGISTERS This transcript is based on 4 documents.
