The Arkansas High School Press Association (AHSPA) was founded in 1929 by the late W.J. Lemke Arkansas Scholastic Press Assoc. P.O. Box 492 of the University of Arkansas. Its purpose was to improve school publications in Arkansas, to State University, AR 72467 increase their prestige, to promote the field of journalism and to recognize outstanding achievement.

Executive Board Members Fourteen high schools attended the first AHSPA convention at the University of Arkansas in Kristy Cates Fayetteville April 19-20, 1929. Lemke, the first executive secretary, immediately began a series of Executive Director & Treasurer contests each spring, held a yearly convention, published a monthly bulletin and also conducted a fall press meeting. Although yearbooks were included in AHSPA at the time, heavy emphasis was Karla Sprague President placed on the more prevalent newspapers during the conventions, with sessions offered in news, sports, feature, headline and column writing. AHSPA conventions were discontinued during World Roy Vaughn War II but were revived in 1946, with meetings at Little Rock Central High School. With the Vice President exception of 1950 and 1951, when no conventions were held, AHSPA has met every year since. Andrew Young Secretary Regional high school press meetings were organized in 1947, and the first journalism section meeting was held during the Arkansas Education Association convention in Little Rock Nov. 8, Justin Turner 1935. Regional Directors After Lemke’s retirement as executive secretary on the 25th anniversary of AHSPA in 1954, five teachers formed an executive board to continue the business of the association until the new Tracey Yates Thompson executive secretary, Roberta Clay of Arkansas State Teachers College at Conway (now the Northeast Region University of Central Arkansas), was appointed later the same year. She retired in 1959, and Dr. Lisa Stine David Bergin of the University of Arkansas took her place. One year later Dr. Jess Covington, also Central Region of the University of Arkansas, became executive secretary, a post he held until 1969 when the title of “executive secretary” was changed to “executive director” and Dr. William D. Downs Jr. of Trent Jones Northwest Region Ouachita Baptist University was appointed to the position until 1996. Gary Lundgren of the University of Arkansas served one year in 1997. Beth Shull served from 1998 until 2005. In the Michael Westbrook summer of 2005, Allen Loibner-Waitkus of The University of Arkansas–Pulaski Technical College Southern Region became executive director, a position he holds to this day. Members-at-Large The Arkansas High School Press Association officially changed its name to the Arkansas Scholastic Julie Fitz Press Association in 1998. The present ASPA board consists of five Arkansas Journalism Advisers Episcopal Collegiate HS, Literary Association officers, five officer-school advisers, four regional directors, one adviser from each Magazine media area and the executive director. Victor Guidry Caddo Hills HS, Newspaper Although conventions were traditionally held either at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville or at Little Rock Central High School, AHSPA officers moved the meeting to the Marion Hotel in Little Jane Andrews Wynne HS, Broadcast Rock in 1969. AHSPA also met at the Royal Vista and the Arlington hotels in Hot Springs and the Camelot Inn in Little Rock. Beginning in 1979, the convention was held at the Excelsior Hotel (later Lesley Allen the Peabody Hotel) and the Statehouse Convention Center. 2019 ASPA CONVENTION INFORMATION PACKET | 6 ON-SITE CONTEST GUIDE • Participants must bring all supplies needed to complete the assignment. Students may use a dictionary, thesaurus and AP Stylebook. Students may not bring in textbooks or bring in previously prepared work. • Computers may not be used (except in computer-generated and video production categories). Layout/design assignments should be hand drawn to represent your ideas. Font, type size, color and other details may be indicated. Magazines may be brought and cut to use photos, graphics and type to represent copy. This is suggested, but it is not required. • Writing assignments must be completed on standard-sized paper with pencil or black ink. • Broadcast and film students must supply their own flash drives for on-site contests. • Photography contestants should pay special attention to the technological requirements for each category. • Please pay special attention to the new notes relating to computer-generated and photography categories.

GENERAL CONTESTS

HEADLINES/CAPTIONS/COPYEDITING • Students will write headlines for provided stories. Judges will look for accurate, informative headlines. Students will use provided information to write captions for provided photos. Judges will look for informative copy that describes the action and gives additional information to tell the story of the photo. Students will correctly edit a story that contains errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar and style. Materials: pencil or pen and paper. Limit one student per ASPA member yearbook, print newspaper and online newspaper.

CARTOONING • Students will use a current events story provided to create a cartoon expressing a point of view. Judges will look for accuracy, reader appeal and impact. Materials: pen or pencil and plain white paper. Optional materials: markers, colored pencils, ruler, etc. Limit one student per school.

MEDIA-BASED CONTESTS

BROADCAST ANCHORING • Students in this contest must write their newscast and deliver it on-camera. Wire copy is provided for the news writing portion of this event. Limit one student per school.

2019 ASPA CONVENTION INFORMATION PACKET | 7 BROADCAST NEWS WRITING • A number of wire copy news stories are given to the students, who then have to write an entire newscast utilizing at least three of those stories. Limit two students per school.

BROADCAST COMMERCIAL/PROMOTIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT • Teams will produce an “on- air” promo of the ASPA convention. (Schools will need to bring equipment for editing for this contest.) Limit two teams per school.

BROADCAST STAND-UP • Teams of two will receive a news story script with a hole in it. The team will brainstorm and shoot a stand-up to fill that hole and serve as a transition between the two parts of the story. No editing is allowed. Entries may be submitted on compressed flash drive. Judges will look for journalistic value, accuracy, viewer appeal and impact. Materials: camera equipment and flash drive. Limit two teams per school.

BROADCAST NEWS CHALLENGE • Schools will receive a topic by email 10 days before the convention. Teams shoot and edit a maximum three-minute news package on the topic. Schools will bring the finished package to the convention to turn in for judging. Limit team per school.

BROADCAST SPORTS CHALLENGE • Schools will receive a topic by email 10 days before the convention. Teams shoot and edit a maximum three-minute sports news or sports feature package on the topic. Schools will bring the finished package to the convention to turn in for judging. Limit one team per school.

SHORT FILM • Schools will receive a topic by email 14 days before the convention. Films should take less than five hours to make. Limit two teams.

MOVIE TRAILER • Students will receive a prompt and make a movie trailer no longer than 60 seconds at convention. Limit two teams.

MUSIC VIDEO • Schools will receive a choice of music (ASPA provided) by email 14 days before the convention. Limit two teams.

SILENT FILM • Schools will receive a prompt and create a silent film no longer than 90 seconds at convention. Limit two teams.

CONVENTION RECAP • Students will be given a prompt and will make a convention recap no longer than 2 minutes at convention. Limited 2 teams per school.

NEWSPAPER EDITORIAL WRITING • Students will use provided information and take a stand on an issue. Judges will look for a concise explanation of the news development, explanation of the staff’s view with recommended action, supporting evidence, rebuttal of the other side, and a strong conclusion restating the staff’s opinion. Materials: pencil or pen and paper. Limit one student per school.

NEWSPAPER REVIEW WRITING • Students will be presented with something (a musical composition, food item, work of art, piece of writing, etc.) and review of the work as a whole. Judges will look for an interesting lead, explanation of significant features of the item, a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the item with specific examples and a strong conclusion. Materials: pencil or pen and paper. Limit one student per school.

NEWSPAPER INTERVIEWING/REPORTING • Students will participate in a press conference and interview. They will then write a feature story on the topic. Judges will look for accuracy, objectivity, description, an interesting lead, informative quotes, good transitions and a strong conclusion. Materials: pencil or pen and paper. YEARBOOK THEME DEVELOPMENT • Students will use provided information to create a yearbook theme packet to include a cover sketch, an endsheet design, and a title page design. Judges will look for contemporary design and graphic techniques that reveal the spirit of the year. Copy writing is no longer included in this category. Materials: pencil or pen and layout paper. Optional materials: markers, colored pencils, magazine cutouts, paste, scissors, ruler, etc. Limit one student per school.

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTESTS

NOTE: To better assist judges, any student entering any photographic carry-in on-site competition should include a CD or flash drive containing JPG versions of the images to be judged. The images should be at least 72 dpi and 8x10 in size. The CD or flash drive should be in a sleeve (for protection) and should not have the student’s name or school written on it. The student will write his or her contest entry number on the CD or flash drive when he or she turns it in for judging. Please make sure the CD or flash drive works and the images open before leaving for the convention. HARD COPIES OF PHOTOS WILL NOT BE JUDGED.

ON-SITE ENTERPRISE SHOOTING—DIGITAL • Photographers will provide their own digital cameras and memory devices. They will be given a convention related topic to be photo- graphed in a manner believed to be most effective. The images should demonstrate the photographer’s knowledge of exposure, lighting, composition, good focus and story-telling ability. Only 24 images may be turned in at deadline time. Judges will look for imaginative subject matter with clear message, photo composition, visual impact, simplicity, effective cropping, lighting and variety. Materials: digital camera with removable memory device. Limit one student per ASPA member yearbook, print newspaper and online newspaper.

CARRY-IN TWO-WEEKS’ WORK—JOURNALISTIC • Students will submit a CD with five images. See the note above for more details. COMPUTER-GENERATED CONTESTS

NOTE: Entrants must bring their own computers with USB ports and power cords. Students should supply their own computers with that run on battery power. ASPA is aware that not all staffs have laptops available to them, so a very limited number of electrical outlets will be available on a first- come-first- serve basis. Extension cords, power strips, etc. will NOT be supplied by ASPA and are, therefore, the responsibility of the student. ENTRIES MUST BE SAVED TO A PDF FILE AND MOVED TO A THUMB DRIVE SUPPLIED BY ASPA.

ANOTHER NOTE: The Internet will be made available to students in the computer-generated on-site contests. Students may use traditional programs (InDesign, etc.) or online design programs (YearTech Online, eDesign, Online Design, Studio Works, etc.). Students may not, however, use any pre-designed templates or elements. Using pre-designed templates or ANY pre-designed element will be disqualified. In the past, the wireless Internet in the convention center hasn’t worked during on-site contests. ASPA has no control over this. Please have a backup plan just in case.

LITERARY MAGAZINE DESIGN • Students will use provided material to create a double-page magazine layout. Judges will look for elements presented in an effective manner that follows the rules of design. Limit one entry per school.

2019 ASPA CONVENTION INFORMATION PACKET | 12 The majority of the work at convention is done by the advisers and staffs of the officer schools, and ASPA heavily encourages schools to run. Officer schools are elected at convention the year before they take office. If your school is interested in running for office, you, as the adviser, should call Kristy Cates at (870) 972-3486 to discuss duties and campaigning procedures. To simplify things, here’s a quick list of requirements to think about before running:

• Your staff must be a current ASPA member. • Your staff must attend the 2019 convention in Springdale. • Your staff must attend the 2020 convention in a yet-to-be-determined city in Arkansas. • Your staff (or at least a portion of your staff members) will need to stay in the hotel the night of and the night before convention to help prepare.

While it is the duty of the board to decide each year what the exact duties of the officer schools are, generally some of the duties are as follows: President—Creates the convention theme, designs programs, runs registration, announces some winners, etc. Vice President—Decorates for and seats students at the awards banquet, etc. Secretary—Helps print certificates, hands out certificates, etc. Media School—Creates slide shows, helps with AV equipment, assists speakers, etc.

ASPA REQUIREMENTS To qualify to be an Arkansas Scholastic Press Association Graduate Scholar, a student must meet ALL of the following requirements: 1. Be a graduating senior and serve on an Graduate ASPA-member broadcast, film, literary magazine, online newspaper, print newspaper and/or yearbook staff. 2. Have served on an ASPA-member staff for two years (the present year included) OR Scholar have served on an ASPA-member staff for one year AND taken one year of Journalism I or an equivalent course while in high school. 3. Have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Info 4.
