7 When Divas and Rock Stars Collide: Interpreting Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé’s Barcelona Eve Klein Mamma mia, what’s this? Freddie Mercury, the man who perpetrated heavy-metal opera in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ shrieking alongside an actual opera star? In 1987 Mercury somehow conned a world-class diva, Montserrat Caballé, to slum with him for an entire album. The result apparently was deemed too flaky to be released in the U.S., but in the wake of Queen’s commercial resurgence (and Mercury’s death last November from AIDS), any curio is up for grabs. (Farber 1992) Introduction This chapter considers Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé’s operatic- rock album Barcelona (1988) as a logical extension of Mercury’s fascination with operatic musical devices, narrative structures and iconography. With this album, two global superstars from divergent musical genres met and brought their musical perspectives into genuine collaboration. However, Barcelona, like other popular explorations of opera, has remained largely 115 POPULAR MUSIC, STARS AND STARDOM unexamined because it sits somewhat uncomfortably across art and popular music, agitating anxieties and authenticities as they operate in both terrains. This chapter will investigate how such anxieties became established by unpacking the circulation of opera within popular recording cultures as elite reproductions of operatic repertory, as ‘crossover’ music and through its appropriation by popular musicians. This chapter will then conduct an analysis of the Barcelona collaboration that situates its creation in the context of Mercury’s musical trajectory. Special consideration will be paid to the musical style established in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (1975). Comparing previous performances to the Barcelona album indicates that Mercury and Caballé largely did not attempt to emulate each other’s vocal style, but reproduced their existing vocal technique.

  • Barcelona- in Occasione Del 25° Anniversario Dall'uscita Dell'album Uno Speciale Ad Esso Dedicato

V: THE GOLDEN AGE, Part 2 The LP-45 boom becomes an explosion As mentioned in the previous chapter, the years 1940-1956 were so rich culturally that it is virtually impossible to describe it all in one chapter, and Americans of all economic and educational backgrounds had free or inexpensive access to music that was once only the prov- ince of the very wealthy. One should note that, in addition to the various innovations men- tioned previously, radio too was part of this free dissemination of the arts. The crown jewel of its epistle may have been Toscanini, but there were also the weekly Metropolitan Opera broadcasts sponsored by Texaco Oil, a commercial-free venue that would continue uninter- rupted until the 2003-04 season, when the company—no longer interested in promoting music that few of their customers listened to—allowed their contract to expire. And then there were two programs, independently sponsored, that brought classical, semi-classical and quasi- classical vocal music to listeners on a weekly basis, the Bell Telephone Hour and The Voice of Firestone. Both had somewhat middlebrow programming, yet they still brought such great singers as Maggie Teyte and Jussi Björling to thousands who would otherwise be unaware of their greatness. During the early LP era, too, “new” conductors (or, at least, conductors previously not known by the general public) were suddenly brought to the fore. As inventor of the LP, Co- lumbia was first, producing records by the New York Philharmonic’s new music director, Artur Rodzinski, as well as his replacement, the great Dmitri Mitropoulos (though, since the New York musicians didn’t “like” Mitropoulos, they rarely played their best for him); a re- markable Polish conductor, Paul Kletzki, in his first EMI recordings with Walter Legge’s newly-formed Philharmonia Orchestra; and the draconian Hungarian, Fritz Reiner, then the music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

  • Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé
im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 01805 - 060347 90476 [email protected] FREDDIE MERCURY & MONTSERRAT CABALLÉ ‘BARCELONA - THE SPECIAL EDITION’ VÖ: 31. AUGUST 2012 Am 31.August 2012 veröffentlicht Island Records eine Jubiläumsedition des Albumklassikers ‘Barcelona’ von Freddie Mercury und Montserrat Caballé. “Ich mache jetzt Oper. Vergesst Rock and Roll.” Freddie Mercury.

  • Slow Turning John Hiatt Fanzine – Issue 11
Slow Turning John Hiatt Fanzine – Issue 11 So What’s a Fanzine, You Ask? Read On and Find Out… Howdy, Hiatt-heads. Back when I started this strange endeavor, the Internet was still in its infancy, crawling at the speed of dial-up. I couldn’t have predicted that one day something called “google” would send me daily updates on my favorite musician. Now just about everybody’s got the ability to track down all that’s been written, recorded and/or web-published on Mr. Hiatt. So, my mission has changed from keeping y’all up to date with what I could find in print to compiling the best of what’s out there on the Web from the Man himself and all the rave reviews he’s still earning. I hope the bits I’ve chosen will help point you toward these online pieces so you can enjoy them in their entirety. So, what’s new since last we ‘zined? Well, the first tidbit filed under good news comes from The Tennesseean, who reported that in 2010 “ The Open Road was the third most-played Americana album of the year, according to the American Music Association, trailing the soundtrack to Crazy Heart and Roseanne Cash’s The List .” ” Under “out-of-this-world” Hiatt-news, we recently learned that the space shuttle program, retired this year, once brought Hiatt into outer-space. Sort-of. In 2002, the astronauts who were on the Columbia space shuttle to repair the Hubble telescope were awakened with a special song, Hiatt’s “Blue Telescope.” Although it’s rather old news now, a great piece on John and his car collection in Motor Trend in 2009 quoted John on this event, which he witnessed along the side of Interstate 95: "All these people were pulled over and I realized they were watching the shuttle being launched.
