This report provides an overview of the activities that can be classified under marine recreation and tourism and how they depend upon and impact our marine ecosystems. The development of the environment in marine areas is crucial for the possibility of future generations to enjoy recreation in these areas. The report describes how various activities may be affected in the future, along with the values that represent the people and Sweden in general. Within Europe, the efforts to implement new legislation around the marine environment have begun in earnest. In order to gather all maritime activities into a single framework, the EU has formulated a maritime strategy designed after three main directions: the Common Fisheries Policy, marine spatial planning, and common environmental legislation for the marine environment. -

Fennia 197(2) 280–294. https://doi.org/10.11143/fennia.83665 When young people travel, they are often very dependent on public transport or parents. This study uses interviews with 16– 19 years old teenagers in Stockholm to investigate their everyday experiences of public transit. The paper explores the experiences of buses and subways, here conceptualized as mobile places, to understand how they shape teenagers’ daily life. Understanding teenagers’ experiences of public transportation is part of understanding their everyday life, struggles, and possibilities to be mobile and participate in society. It is also a step towards ensuring that they find public transportation inclusive, safe, and worth traveling with today and in the future. Conceptually, the analysis focuses on how these mobile places are experienced as providing weights or reliefs to the everyday and if, how and when they may be places of interaction or retreat, addressing two needs in teenagers’ personal being and development. The study shows how various experiences of traveling with buses and subways shape how the teenagers feel, and how they make strategic choices in relation to this. A quite manifold, varying, and complex picture of public transportation arises, with stories of wellbeing, comfort, discomfort, and exclusion, and with sharp differences between girls and boys, and between buses and subways. These nuances are essential in planning and evaluation of transport systems in regard to how, when, where, or for whom public transport can be a part of social sustainability, as public policies often assume. -

ISSN 1401-6230, ISBN 91-576-6529-X Animal-vehicle collisions are a common phenomenon worldwide, causing injury or death to millions of animals and hundreds of human passengers each year. Collision numbers can be significant to species conservation, wildlife management, traffic safety, as well as from an economic and political point of view, and should thus be evaluated from these different perspectives. In this thesis, I assess, evaluate, analyse and predict animal-vehicle collisions with respect to their extent, their effect on populations, and their broad and fine scale distribution. A questionnaire with Swedish drivers indicated that nationwide road traffic in 1992 may caused an annual loss in harvest of common game species of 7% to 97% and of 1% to 12% of estimated populations. Road mortality did not appear as an existential threat to most species, although in badgers (Meles meles), traffic probably is the largest single cause of death. A slow population growth rate coupled with a high proportion of adult badger road-kills is responsible for their sensitivity to road mortality. Provided that road mortality is additive, we predicted that losses due to nationwide traffic might already exceed birth rates and limit badger population growth. -

It describes and analyses road safety trends in 2014. As in previous years, results are analysed in terms of the number of fatalities and injured as well as of a series of designated indicators. The report will provide the basis for the 2015 results conference in Stockholm, on 21 April. The report was produced by a group of analysts from the Swedish Transport Agency, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and the Swedish Transport Administration. The current interim target for road safety is to halve the number of fatalities between 2007 and 2020. That translates into a maximum of 220 road deaths in 2020. -

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate Swedish and Finnish hauliers’ experiences of using the European Modular System, EMS, which entails Sweden and Finland the use of longer and heavier vehicle combinations (LHV’s). In short, EMS consists of the longest semi-trailer, with a maximum length of 13,6 m, and the longest load-carrier according to C-class, with a maximum length of 7,82 m, allowed in EU. This results in vehicle combinations of 25,25 m. The maximum length within the rest of Europe is 18,75 m. Thus, by using LHV’s, the volume of three EU combinations can be transported by two EMS combinations. This study indicates that the use of LHV’s according to EMS have positive effect on economy and environment, while not affecting traffic safety negatively. Swedish hauliers have the possibility of using either the traditional 24 m road trains or 25,25 m LHV’s according to EMS for national long distance transports. Experiences of using EMS vehicle combinations are mostly positive. LHV’s according to EMS implies increased load area and flexibility compared to the 24 m road trains. -

Technology, economics, ronment and politics have influenced the government’s policy formation and decisions on organi- zational models over time, such as the nationalization of roads and railroads in the 1930s- 40s. The aim for improved economic efficiency and reduction of cost differences between different parts of the country rather than political ideology explain why roads and rail- roads were nationalized. Through adjusting its ownership role and policy content the government has, over time, accommodated to the different influences from technology, economics and politics. The government’s ownership of transport infrastructure has not been challenged since the nationalization. Master in Economic Development and Growth The contribution of tourism development to economic growth of Sweden: A panel data approach Vladana Ajvaz [email protected] Abstract: By using panel data for 21 counties in Sweden from 2003 to 2013, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between tourism development and economic growth in this country, within the neoclassical growth framework. To address the objective of this study, the appropriate panel data methods are used, namely both static and dynamic panel approaches. The results show that tourism is a positive and significant determinant of Swedish economic growth. Moreover, the tourism coefficient proves its robustness through majority of performed estimations. Therefore, this study supports the existence of the tourism-led growth hypothesis in this Scandinavian country, which is in line with our expectations. Hence, macroeconomic policies that promote tourism expansion will directly stimulate economic growth and this is expected to happen in the future since Swedish tourism capacity is still not used at its full potential. The major part of the study was conducted from 2002-2004. One of the points of departure in the present project is the report ”Järnvägens utvecklingsmöjligheter på den framtida godstransportmarknaden” (The Railways’ Development Prospects in a uture Freight Transportation Market) that was published in 2000. The project was conducted as an interdisciplinary project, principally involving senior researchers from different departments at the Royal Institute and also a number of outside experts. The project manager was Associate Professor Bo-Lennart Nelldal at the Division of Transportation and Logistics, who also wrote this principal report. -
