n a small park near State Hwy. 169 and Old Minnesota Avenue in St. Peter are two very Iimportant historical sites. A large boulder with a bronze tablet marks the site of the signing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux on July 23, 1851. Nearby, a smaller stone with a bronze tablet is inscribed with the DAR Insignia and the words: “The Old French Cemetery was located south of this ravine. The earliest settlers and a few Indians were buried there until about 1850. Erected by Traverse des Sioux Chapter DAR. 1939.” These are two of the more than 100 historical markers, monuments and memorials erected by the Minnesota State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and various DAR chapters throughout the state from 1903 –1960. Faye Leach, State Regent 2017 –2019, has taken restoration of the markers as her state regent’s project. Leach will visit the Treaty Site History Center in St. Peter on Thursday, September 27 and will present a slideshow and talk about the DAR markers throughout the state.
