GAUGE:
11 sts + 24 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Rows 14 of pattern.
When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
STITCH EXPLANATION:
yo (yarn over) 1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles. 2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle to make a new loop on your needle (almost like a new st!). yo2 (double yarn over) 1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles. 2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle to make a new loop on your needle. 3. Rep steps 1 and 2, taking care not to drop the first yo off the right needle, to make a second loop on your needle.
NOTES:
Scarf is worked in one piece in an easy drop stitch pattern. Extra loops are made by working yarn overs and double yarn overs. All of the loops from the yarn overs are dropped from the needle when knitting the following row. The dropped sts are an easy way to create a lacy look.
SCARF Loosely cast on 21 sts. Rows 1 and 2: Knit. Row 3: K7, (yo, k1) 7 times, (yo2, k1) 7 times – you will have 21 knit sts and 21 yarn overs at the end of this row. Row 4: (K1, drop next 2 yarn overs off needle) 7 times, (k1, drop next yarn over off needle) 7 times, k7 – 21 sts. Rows 520: Rep Rows 14 four times. Rows 21 and 22: Knit. Row 23: (K1, yo2) 7 times, (k1, yo) 7 times, k7 – 21 knit sts and 21 yarn overs. Row 24: K7, (drop next yarn over off needle, k1) 7 times, (drop next 2 yarn overs off needle, k1) 7 times – 21 sts. Rows 2540: Rep Rows 2124 four times. Rep Rows 140 until piece measures about 74 in. (188 cm) from beginning, end with a Row 2 or Row 22 as the last row you work. Bind off loosely.
FINISHING Weave in ends.
