Student Research and Creative Works Book Collecting Contest Essays University of Puget Sound Year 2015 The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works Krista Silva University of Puget Sound, [email protected] This paper is posted at Sound Ideas. http://soundideas.pugetsound.edu/book collecting essays/6 Krista Silva The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works I am an inhabitant of the Whedonverse. When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing.

  • Crossmedia Adaptation and the Development of Continuity in the Dc Animated Universe
“INFINITE EARTHS”: CROSSMEDIA ADAPTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUITY IN THE DC ANIMATED UNIVERSE Alex Nader A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Jeff Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin © 2015 Alexander Nader All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeff Brown, Advisor This thesis examines the process of adapting comic book properties into other visual media. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

  • Doctor Strange Comics As Post-Fantasy
Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Karen Swenson, Chair Nancy A. Metz Katrina M. Powell April 15, 2019 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Fantasy, Comics Studies, Postmodernism, Post-Fantasy Copyright 2019, Jessie L. Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts.

  • To What Extent Does Chimera Ant Teach Us About Humanity? a Thematic Look at Hunter X Hunter’S Chimera Ant Arc
To What Extent Does Chimera Ant Teach Us About Humanity? A Thematic Look at Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant Arc MrDrWombat Extended Essay: Film May 2015 MrDrWombat 2 Abstract Hunter x Hunter (2011) is a Japanese animated television series produced by Madhouse production studio. It is an adaptation of a manga of the same name. Chimera Ant is a story arc within the show that deals with post-humanism and the complex nature of humanity. My research question for the extended essay was, “To what extent does Chimera Ant teach us about humanity?” To investigate my research question, I watched and analyzed the Chimera Ant story arc, paying close attention to the character development and thematic reasoning behind character actions. I used knowledge of film language and context behind the medium of animation in order to create a mirrored character analysis of the protagonist and antagonist of Chimera Ant. Analyzing these two characters, along with the context of the medium of Anime, allowed me to construct a look at human nature through the symmetrical story arcs of these two main characters. After having done this, I concluded that Chimera Ant explores the human condition to a great extent, and uses the focus of these two characters as proof. The protagonist, Gon, shows the potential for evil in the best of us, and how good intentions can lead to bad actions. The antagonist, Meruem, shows the other side of humanity and identity. His arc teaches us the complexity of worth and strength within humans, and shows that good can come from even the most evil.

Abstract This dissertation argues that the recent refashioning of the genealogical plot by Canadian women entails a dual process whereby, on the one hand, the idea of family is radically redefined and, on the other hand, the conservative traditions of family are in some way recuperated. For my analysis of the multi-generational family history, 1 develop a complex critical framework which demonstrates that the organizing principles goveming any particular conception of family will also influence the way that family's story is nmted.

  • MLJ's Silver Age Revivals
ASK MR. SHUTTSILVER AGE “Too Many Super Heroes” doesn’t really do this group justice MLJ’s Silver Age revivals by CRAIG SHUTT Dear Mr. Silver Age, I’m a big fan of The Fly and Fly Girl, and I understand they were members of a super-hero team. Do you know who else was a member? Betty C. Riverdale Mr. Silver Age says: I sure do, Bets, and you’ll be happy to hear that a few of those stalwart super-heroes are returning to the pages of DC’s comic books. The first to arrive are The Shield, The Web, The Hangman, and Inferno. They’re being touted as the heroes from Archie Comics’ short-lived Red Circle line of the 1980s, but they all got their start much earlier than that, including brief appearances in the Silver Age. During those halcyon days, they all were members of (or at least tried out for) The Mighty Crusaders! And, if the new adventures prove popular, there are plenty more heroes awaiting their own revival. The Mighty Crusaders, Archie’s response to the mid-1960s success of super-hero teams, got their start in Fly Man #31 (May 65). The team consisted of The Shield, Black Hood, The Comet, Fly Man (né The Fly), and Fly Girl. The first three were revived versions of Golden Age characters, while the latter two starred in their own Silver Age series. The heroes teamed up for several issues and then began individual back-up adventures through #39.
