houses Epsom has always been a boarding and day school whose ethos is based strongly on the House system. Currently there are seven boys’ and six girls’ single-sex houses. Each is fully self-contained with its own common room, games room, library and changing rooms. Each is run by a senior member of staff, the Housemaster or Housemistress, who in turn runs a team of tutors each responsible for a small group of pupils.

Housemasters/Housemistresses and Matrons are happy to assist with arranging airport transfers at the start/end of terms and for Exeat weekends to guardians or host families. However, whilst the school uses regulated taxi companies, these public companies do not form part of the guardianship service for pupils. The driver will meet pupils in the arrivals hall at the airport upon arrival but we are not able to provide the name or contact details of the individual driver in advance. If a more personal service is required, we would request that ground transportation is arranged through a pupil’s guardian and not the School.

A pupil is the responsibility of their parent or guardian until they have arrived at Epsom College following a break. When booking flights for international boarders we also request that pupils should not depart/arrive at unreasonable hours in order to prevent disruption to others. This means that pupils should not leave/arrive at their Boarding House before 6.00am nor later than 11.00pm. A very early morning or late evening flight may therefore require a pupil to stay overnight with their guardian.

Pupils may not keep prescribed or over the counter medicines without the prior knowledge of permission of the Housemaster/ mistress/Matron. Those doing so will be expected to complete a risk assessment form providing details of medication, dose, quantity & side effects. This is especially important when bringing medication from overseas.

If a boarder is ill and likely to be in the Medical Centre for more than 24 hours, the nursing staff will endeavour to contact the parents or guardian. In the event of an illness affecting large numbers of the school population, and according to College policy, parents/guardians may be requested to remove pupils from school until they are fully recovered.

Administration of Medicines from Overseas Pupils returning from overseas and who bring medication obtained from another country must be willing to provide, from the prescriber, written details of the name, nature, dose and quantity of the drug(s) supplied.

28 Appearance

We expect that parents will fully support our efforts to keep pupils tidily and smartly dressed by making sure that the clothing worn by their sons and daughters is clean, in good repair and in accordance with the College’s regulations. Informal dress is allowed during certain times at the weekends and also from 6.00pm on weekdays. We trust that parents will only permit appropriate clothing to be brought to school.

Pupils are expected to have sensible hairstyles, which should be smartly groomed and of an acceptable length – neither excessively long, nor very short. Hair must be of one colour, which is a natural colour for hair.

Girls may wear a single pair of earrings or ear studs in the lower earlobes (facial or other body piercing is not allowed), and a ring or a crucifix, or other very discreet items of jewellery. However, discretion is the key word, and nothing ostentatious is allowed.

Boys’ and girls’ clothing is obtained from the Epsom College Store, which is the only authorised supplier of the items of regulation uniform.

All articles of equipment and clothing, including shoes, must be clearly marked with the owner’s initials, surname and House letter.

All games kit must be clearly marked with the pupil’s name and House. Uniform and sports clothing purchased from the College may be labelled while you wait using pre- printed heat seal name tapes. There is a charge for this service.
