Boy Scout Troop 58 - 2016 Year in Review

2016 was a remarkable year for Troop 58; although it was just our third year as a Troop, we accomplished some amazing things:

 Growing/maintaining the Troop o Completed the year with a roster of 40 highly-engaged Scouts o 61.5% of the Troop’s members advanced one or more ranks o 3 Scouts completed the requirements for the Eagle rank – the highest rank in Scouting o Received Scouting’s national Gold-level Journey to Excellence award o Improved the Troop’s advanced Adult Leader training posture: three adults completed Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training, three adults completed Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS), one adult completed Safe Swim Defense, and one completed Fast Start orientation o Two Scouts elected to the , Scouting’s National Honor Society  Providing challenging outdoor, physical, and fun experiences o Skiing trip to Whitetail Ski Resort in Mercersburg, PA o SportRock climbing overnighter in Sterling, VA o Shooting campout in Manassas, VA o Biking campout along the C&O Canal tow path from Leesburg, VA to Washington, DC (~50 miles) o Whitewater Rafting campout on the Youghiogheny River in Ohiopyle, PA o New Scout campout in Ashburn, VA o Patrol Challenge outing at the Blue Ridge Environmental Center in Purcellville, VA o Scout Skills campout at Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, VA o Hiking campout at Elizabeth’s Furnace in Fort Valley, VA o 28 Scouts attended week-long Boy Scout summer camp @ Goshen, VA  Serving our community o Led Scout Sunday activities for the Troop’s Chartering Organization – St. David’s Episcopal Church o Supported St. Theresa Catholic Church’s You(th) vs. Hunger event o Supported the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon o Participated in the Ashburn Village 4th of July parade o Held an extensive facility and site beautification service project for St. David’s Episcopal Church o Began ongoing lawnmowing service for the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department o Collected 297 lbs. of food for the needy during the annual Scouting for Food event  Providing a path for younger Scouts to continue with Scouting o Support for Pack 1445’s Pinewood Derby o Support for Cub Scout Pack 1445’s Cross-over Ceremony  Running the Troop o Held 31 Troop meetings o Held 3 Troop-wide Courts of Honor award and rank advancement ceremonies o Coordinated 12 Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM) meetings o Facilitated 8 Troop Committee meetings o Held 10 Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) meetings o Held 4 Ashburn Village movie night fundraiser events o Transitioned the Troop’s meeting location from Trailside Middle School to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department o Maintained a strong financial reserve by keeping our cash balance essentially flat year over year @ $15,230 o Purchased additional equipment for the Troop, including a utility trailer for storing and transporting Troop gear o Launched the Troop’s new website – http://troop58ashburn.camp
