The President's Young Talents 2018 at Singapore Art Museum
Media Release For immediate release The President’s Young Talents 2018 at Singapore Art Museum Highlighting a new generation of Singaporean contemporary artists before SAM’s buildings close for a major revamp 24 September 2018, Singapore – The Singapore Art Museum presents the President’s Young Talents 2018 exhibition at SAM at 8Q from 4 October 2018 to 27 January 2019, featuring five Singaporean contemporary artists – Yanyun Chen, Weixin Quek Chong, Debbie Ding, Hilmi Johandi and Zarina Muhammad. This exhibition will be the last held within the museum’s premises before both buildings close for a major revamp, and SAM undertakes off-site and pop-up exhibitions in partner and neighbourhood venues. Inaugurated in 2001 by SAM, the President’s Young Talents is the nation’s only mentoring, commissioning and award programme. It recognises promising Singaporean artists aged 35 and below, whose practices chart new dimensions in contemporary art. Over the years, it has seen numerous artists go on to develop outstanding work in and beyond Singapore. This 7th edition of the President’s Young Talents seeks to achieve greater artistic and curatorial growth for the artists involved and curator-mentors respectively, maintaining its core focus to nurture emerging artists. The five artists will present newly commissioned artworks that span painting, sculpture, performance and new media, developed under the guidance of a curator-mentor panel made up of David Chan, Roger Nelson, Grace Tan, Jason Wee and Zaki Razak. Dr. June Yap, Director of Curatorial, Programmes and Publication at the Singapore Art Museum says, “Central to the President’s Young Talents programme is the recognition and presentation of significant aesthetic practices of our young and emerging artists. -

Media Release For Immediate Release The Substation presents Discipline the City Responding to the Question of Control, Access and the Politics of Space Singapore, 10 August 2017 – The failure of architecture and the invisible hand of the city come under scrutiny with The Substation’s latest exhibition, Discipline the City. Separated into three acts, Discipline the City will run from 23 August to 24 September, 4 October to 22 October and 1 November to 26 November 2017 at The Substation. Throughout these three acts, Discipline the City features a permanent gallery, a rotating cast of artists, an architectural case competition, and a punk-in-residence programme, as well as a series of public programmes and events. Co-curated by Alan Oei, Artistic Director of The Substation, and Joshua Comaroff, a designer and assistant professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design, the exhibition examines the question of control, access, and the politics of space and provokes visitors into questioning their right to the city and their place within it. The exhibition is an expression of The Substation’s artistic theme for 2017, also called Discipline the City. Every year, The Substation presents an overarching artistic theme that informs the exhibitions, programmes and initiatives for the year. Each of these programmes explores in greater detail the questions posed by the artistic theme and the societal issues surrounding these questions. Through these annual artistic themes, The Substation expands, leads and supports cultural conversations in Singapore, engaging the general public and exposing them to the full possibilities of contemporary art in shaping public discourse. -

MEDIA RELEASE Singapore Art Museum’s latest exhibition, UNEARTHED, invites audiences to explore our relationship with the natural world First exhibition of 2014 charts the museum’s new direction to present the intersection of contemporary art and other disciplines 17 March 2014, Singapore – Following the close of Singapore Biennale 2013, the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is proud to present its first exhibition of the year, UNEARTHED, which seeks to investigate artists’ views on the natural world and invites viewers to contemplate their relationships with the natural environment. This examination of earthly experiences, expressed through contemporary art, exemplifies SAM’s new direction of encompassing projects and practices that present art intersecting with various disciplines and modalities. This is also SAM’s inaugural exhibition as a corporatised entity under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth’s (MCCY) Visual Arts Cluster (VAC). Unveiling works across various mediums from performance to photography, installation and video, the exhibition explores the concept of nature as an object and subject, one that can be and has been studied, controlled and constructed. This extends into a metaphor for the nation and its national identity, with contrasting notions from a carefully cultivated ‘Garden City’, to nature as unknown, uncanny, and untamed. It also draws on memories of nature’s recent incursions into the cityscape. UNEARTHED sees works drawn from SAM’s permanent collection as well as private and artists’ collections. In addition, SAM has commissioned seven local artists to produce new works that resonate with the topic at hand. These 28 artworks from UNEARTHED, presented in the SAM Galleries, offer insights on how artists in Singapore view and respond to the natural world, coming from and living in an urban and built-up environment, exploring topics such as water, geography, memory, natural history, raw material and the fragility of nature. -

Taking the cue from artists’ changing modes of creating and presenting work, SAM presents its latest exhibition Wikicliki: Collecting Habits on an Earth Filled with Smartphones to explore key strategies needed in the collection of contemporary art today. The exhibition opens from 22 April to 11 July 2021 at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Concourse Gallery, National Gallery Singapore, one of SAM’s satellite gallery spaces this year, as its buildings undergo redevelopment. Wikicliki features six artists whose modes of working provide unique insights into a range of issues confronting contemporary practitioners in Singapore today. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Weixin Quek Chong wins the Grand Prize and Yanyun Chen the People’s Choice Ảward at the President’s Young Talents 2018 29 November 2018, Singapore – Singapore Art Museum announced the winners of the seventh edition of the President’s Young Talents this evening at an awards ceremony graced by Madam Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore. Weixin Quek Chong won the Grand Prize with her artwork titled sft crsh ctrl, while Yanyun Chen‘s The scars that write us garnered the most votes by members of public at the exhibition, clinching the People‘s Choice Award. The Grand Prize and People‘s Choice Award are worth $20,000 and $5,000 respectively, and will go towards the development of their artistic practices. Inaugurated in 2001 by SAM, the President’s Young Talents is the nation‘s only mentoring, commissioning and award programme for emerging Singaporean artists aged 35 and below. Alumni and winners of earlier editions include the likes of Heman Chong, Boo Junfeng, Charles Lim and Ang Song Ming, many of whom have gone on to develop outstanding work in and beyond Singapore. This edition features artworks by Yanyun Chen, Weixin Quek Chong, Debbie Ding, Hilmi Johandi and Zarina Muhammad, developed under the guidance of a curator-mentor panel made up of David Chan, Roger Nelson, Grace Tan, Jason Wee and Zaki Razak.
