uslims travelling to Mecca for Umrah can extend their trip or visit any of these places when they go to India. These destinations are popular with Muslims in India such as Ajmer Sharif, the resting place of Gharib-Nawaz; Jama Masjid, the Msplendid mosque in Delhi (the largest in India); Haji Ali Mosque built in the middle of the sea in Mumbai; Fatehpur Sikri – the city of Emperor Akbar; the innumerable forts such as Delhi and Agra and most important of all the Taj Mahal at Agra, which, as one of the Seven Wonders of the world, and is synonymous with India.

In March this year, more than 50 travel agents in Brunei were given a glimpse of the vast variety of travel holidays offered by India at the KNOW INDIA Seminar series organised by India Tourism, Singapore and IN Magazine with the support of the High Commission of India, Brunei. The India High Commissioner to Brunei LD Ralte in his welcome address said, “I am happy that India Tourism Board, Singapore and IN Magazine have organised the Know India seminar. It is very well timed and needed in Brunei. This a good time to market the country as everyone is looking afresh at India following last December’s ASEAN-India Car Rally. Our sincere hope is that this series of seminars will give a boost to tourism in India.”

A panel of four Bruneians who have visited India also shared their experiences and answered questions from the travel trade. They had visited Mumbai, Goa, Shimla and Kerala and were impressed by these places which have left a lasting impression on them.

By the end of the seminar, the Brunei travel agents had received both ‘hard’ information such as itineraries and tour highlights and actual feedback from visitors to India to get a better feel of the destination so they will be better equipped with the knowledge to promote the country and capture more bookings.

India has a great potential as a popular destination for Bruneians. According to India Tourism officials, the multi-tourism products of India go beyond cultural attractions. The KNOW INDIA seminars are promoting adventure sports, golf, polo, medical tourism, wellness tourism, as well as a shopper’s paradise along with its great variety of Indian cuisines. India is also a round- the-year destination with something for everyone: beaches, mountains, in short, an amazing destination for all seasons and all reasons.

Merging MetaphorsBy Priya Ramakrishnan

Initiative by Indian Council for Cultural Relations to bond through ASEAN and Indian art

erging Metaphors’ is an innovative art exhibition that displayed art works of 25 artists from the ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and India at the Waterfront Gallery in Bandar ‘SeriM Begawan from 6-13 December 2012.

The artists’ worked together to create artworks in an atmosphere of close camaraderie that went beyond borders. The initiative organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) sought to forge a sense of bonding and 1 harmony between the ASEAN community and India, countries that share cultural roots and geographical proximity.

The artists were flown in exclusively to scenic Darjeeling in Eastern India with its rolling hills, old monasteries and tiered tea estates. The breathtaking panorama of green mountains provided the back drop and inspiration for the group to create artworks and paintings that will be added to the ICCR collection for display in its offices in India and elsewhere.

Mutual understanding Curated by Sushma K Bahl jointly with Archana B Sapra, the project involved the 2 artists living, working and interacting with each other to draw, paint, write or do other things in the mornings, visits to local sites of art historical and cultural significance in the afternoons and discussions in the evenings to facilitate networking, information sharing and building mutual understanding.

The paintings from the 25 artists captured the hues and essence of diverse Indian culture and the artworks were a representation of their perceptions. The inspired artworks were then exhibited in the ASEAN countries. “There is a common cultural and civilizational thread which brings India and countries of Southeast Asia together. This common thread is evident in their performing 3 arts such as Wayng Kulit, Apsara dance in Cambodia and Laos, the Ramayana in Thailand and many others. The vibrant similarities have been possible because of earlier interactions between India and these countries dating back to almost 1500 years,” said Dr Suresh K Goel, Director General, ICCR.

He further added, “The Look East policy of India is inspired by these civilizational links and our common aspirations for socio-economic growth in contemporary times. This initiative provided an opportunity for the painters from these countries to share their creative ideas and further explore these similarities.”

The 44 paintings exhibited the unique Indian flavours where the artists had captured Indian girls dressed in their bright traditional garbs, school children on their way to school, the lazy afternoon atmosphere of the sleepy village etc.
