ZARA: A fortune-telling Romani woman in full regalia who is also the groundskeeper. (This character is actually played by another character in disguise. A false name should be used in the program to cover this trick.) A MYSTERIOUS STRANGER: A formidable, bald man of 60. (This part is doubled by Thomas, the butler. A false name should be supplied in the program for this part, as well.) SETTING Sunnyside Cottage, a large and slightly spooky country home. Brookdale, Connecticut 1931 RUN TIME 90 Minutes AUTHOR’S NOTE When I was first asked to write a small whodunit musical, I immediately thought of The Bat by Mary Roberts Rinehart. I had seen it as a kid at my local high school since The Bat was standard fare for schools and community theaters back in the day. It was based on Ms. Rinehart’s novella The Circular Staircase and, as The Bat, was a big hit on Broadway, was made into two Hollywood films, and made Mary Roberts Rinehart a very wealthy woman. The novella, which is in the public domain, has about a hundred characters and at least a dozen subplots, so it was great fun cutting it down to six characters in the drawing room of a spooky manor. I hope you all have as much fun doing Whodunit… The Musical as I had adapting it. MUSICAL NUMBERS ACT I 1. All WHODUNIT… THE MUSICAL –PRODUCTION SCRIPT 1 ACT I SUNNYSIDE COTTAGE, A LARGE AND SLIGHTLY SPOOKY COUNTRY HOME. BROOKDALE, CONNECTICUT 1931. The entire action takes place in the living room of an elegant “but slightly spooky” country estate. The “spookiness” does not detract from the fact that it is an opulent dwelling. On stage left is the main entrance. There is a large and imposing curved staircase in the center of the back wall, which leads to an upstairs landing with at least three bedroom doors. A large painting of Jared Armstrong (bald and rather unappealing), the owner and builder of the house, hangs above the staircase. The area below the staircase needs enough wall space to accommodate a sliding panel to a secret room. On stage right is a large open hallway leading off to the East Wing where there is a kitchen and many more bedrooms. The furnishings must include a large sofa stage left and overstuffed reading chair with ottoman stage right. At center there should also be a small table with chairs where tea might be served. At the opening, there are sheets over all the furniture, which the “SERVANTS” will remove as they open the drapes and prepare the house for guests. SONG #1: SUNNYSIDE THOMAS (to the audience): Welcome to Sunnyside Cottage… SERVANTS (actually Sally, Jack, and Jarvis playing the servants): SUNNYSIDE AT THE END OF A LOVELY RIDE THROUGH THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRYSIDE YOU’LL DISCOVER IT HERE. (YOU’LL DISCOVER, DISCOVER IT HERE.) They begin removing the drapes from the furniture and dusting. IT’S A WONDERFUL HIDEAWAY WHERE THERE’S NOTHING TO DO BUT PLAY AND WHO CARES WHAT THE NEIGHBORS SAY, THOUGH THEY SAY IT WITH FEAR? (HOW THEY SAY IT. THEY SAY IT WITH FEAR.) THOMAS: I thought we agreed we weren’t going to talk about that. SERVANT (SALLY): Sorry. THOMAS (to audience): Excuse us. WHODUNIT… THE MUSICAL –PRODUCTION SCRIPT 2 SERVANTS: THERE’S A RUMOR THAT SOMEONE’S THERE HIDING SECRETLY ON THE STAIR. AND THE RUMORS ARE EVERYWHERE, WHICH COULD MAKE YOU FEEL QUEER! (THEY COULD MAKE YOU FEEL TERRIBLY QUEER.) THOMAS: You really must stop going on about it. SERVANTS: WHAT WE’RE SAYING IS, LIVING HERE THOMAS: Shh! SERVANTS: THERE’S A TERRIBLE ATMOSPHERE THOMAS: Stop! SERVANTS: AND WE’RE LONGING TO DISAPPEAR. They change their activities to collecting their own luggage. START THE CAR, WE’LL BE JOURNEYING VERY FAR. DOESN’T MATTER HOW FAR WE ARE LONG AS WE ARE NOT HERE. (WE’LL BE HAPPY WHEN WE ARE NOT HERE.) They put on their hats and coats. WE’VE HAD ALL THAT WE CARE TO BEAR OF THIS FETID AND STAGNANT AIR SO WE’RE PACKING OUR UNDERWEAR AS WE’RE QUAKING WITH FEAR. (WE ARE QUAKING. WE’RE QUAKING WITH FEAR.) Suddenly, spooky music begins to play, the lights flash off and on, the curtains blow and the pictures on the wall move around. THOMAS: Well, I suppose it is a BIT scary. SERVANTS: NONETHELESS WE ARE HAPPY TO MAKE A COURTEOUS BOW TO YOU AS WE BID YOU A FOND ADIEU. LEAVING THIS LEGENDARY, DWELLING, SO DARK AND SCARY, SUNNYSIDE, SUNNYSIDE, SUNNYSIDE, SUNNYSIDE COTTAGE WHODUNIT… THE MUSICAL –PRODUCTION
