Moeder Stefania wilde het liefst dat Valentino voetballer werd, maar Valentino was meer geïnteresseerd in gravel pits en motorraces. Vader Graziano probeerde 1 jaar voordat Valentino, toen 9 jaar, legaal aan de go-kart deel mocht nemen, al een juniorkartlicentie te krijgen, maar dit mislukte. In 1990 won hij met 9 overwinningen het regionale Kart Kampioenschap. In 1991 ging hij ook op minibikes rijden en won hij 16 races in de regionale minibikewedstrijden. Maar omdat minibikesracen voor de lol was, ging hij toch door met karten en werd hij 5e in het Nationaal Kart Kampioenschap in Parma.
