Dear Westerly Families and Friends,

Welcome to the Greatest Westerly School Celebration on Earth! Thank you so much for joining us tonight at this 25th anniversary circus extravaganza to support Westerly’s mission and the incredible programs and opportunities that our tremendous school offers all the students who walk into our classrooms. The Westerly community has made “whole child education” accessible to thousands of students in Long Beach throughout the last 25 years, supporting students’ boundless potential in the arts, academics, athletics, and leadership to name a mere few.

By celebrating here tonight, you are helping us to raise nearly 5% of our annual budget. Your generosity helps grow and sustain our unique programs that directly benefit our students. From Westerly’s 2 & 3D arts em- phasis, choral and instrumental programs, rigorous language arts curriculum, cutting edge science program, and a robust financial assistance program--the funds raised here contribute to the overall growth and vitality of our school. It takes a community to raise a child.

While together we have this fun opportunity to celebrate all things Westerly this evening, there are a few folks who deserve special recognition for making the Greatest School on Earth’s 25th Anniversary Auction possible: Our auction co-chairs, Nicole Nguyen and Michelle Thibodeaux and the Auction Team who have worked tirelessly to bring this amazing vision to life. Their dedication, coordination, and management of even the tiniest detail is unparalleled and it is with so much gratitude that I recognize each and every second of sweat and tears that they poured into making this dream come alive tonight. In addition, my deepest and sincerest thanks go to Jessica Ngo, our illustrious Advancement Director, and Molly Shannon, Westerly’s Ad- vancement Associate--your work is tireless, often under the radar, and seemingly endless. You are rockstars in every way. Jessica Ngo, your impact on this campus is felt every day, and you will be so missed.

For everyone here tonight, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I say often that the business of education is affective in nature. Rarely do I go a day without soothing a child’s tears, high fiving with a teacher for a learning victory with a student, or burrowing into some chocolate with a parent who is struggling with their moody adolescent. And here tonight is no different, we are a small but mighty community of deeply caring faculty, administration, parents, families, and friends who come together to make our school the remarkable institution that it is--it’s an honor to steward Westerly alongside all of you here tonight.

SILENT AUCTION RULES 1. Each item in the Silent Auction has a bid sheet attached nearby on the table. Persons desiring to bid may do so by writing their name and bid number on the line next to the pre-printed amount they wish to bid on the bid sheet. Use only the bid number assigned to you. 2. Each new bid must be written on a blank line available on the bid sheet. Silent Auction bids will be dis- qualified if the minimum bid and raise increments are not respected. After your name is written on the bid card, it may not be removed. Bid entries may not be changed. 3. An authorized person may disqualify your bid if you are blocking the bidding table 15 minutes or less, prior to the closing of the table. 4. Warning will be given over the public address system of the imminent closing of the Silent Auction sections. The person whose signature or bid number appears next to the highest bid, at the time the bidding is finished, purchases the item. An Auction official will circle the winning bidder’s name on the bid sheet. 5. If there is any dispute, an “Auction official” will determine the winning bid. Westerly’s Reading and Research Center will be a hub for student learning, collaboration, presentation, and engagement with each other and with literature.

Research about student engagement and success finds that a library space, in which students have time and resources to read, study, and work together positively impacts academic achievement across disciplines. Not only does research support that students perform better on standardized testing/exams the more access they have to various types of literature and multiple perspectives, but also libraries with various resources (including books, technology, quiet space) help to support the work of the teachers within the classrooms and vitally ensures equitable access to resources irrespective of home opportunities or constraints. Which directly speaks to Westerly’s mission to support inclusivity and diversity.

The Lower School area in the Reading & Research Center will serve as the focal point for Reader’s & Writer’s Workshop, thematic learning, project design, and student presentations.

The Middle School area will serve as the center of the PREP Program in which students can have designated tools and space to conduct research, plan together, design and execute digital presentations, and host showcases based on their research, engineering and personal passions.

Lifting the glass up to my nose I’m greeted with butter- scotch, caramel, warmed baked multigrain bread, and hints of liquorice and dried raisins, all of which are undermined by a heavy hanging dose of alcohol. This was surprising to me, as while you sometimes have a little alcohol scent upfront when you get to the 100 proof range, this comes across as excessive. After a few minutes in the glass however, the alcohol scent mostly dissipates and you’re left with a pleasant blend of all of the aforementioned scents. They were challenged to think about their families and friends, their values, and life lessons learned, before contemplating which word they’d like to present on their arms for the photograph. Thoughtful decisions were made by all, and conversations were sparked that continue to surprise and inspire the adults lucky enough to be in their presence! Conceptualized by Fine Art Photographer and 2nd grade parent, Hemali Zaveri, students raised their hands to the sky in celebration of hope, change, free- dom, love, and so much more! The end result is a stunning 48” x 20” Fine Art Photograph printed on canvas that gives us all pause to think about what we hold dear.

2004 HANGING WALL DECOR - 3RD GRADE ART Just like the discs, our children are all linked together by the school bond, held together and led by the strong branch which represents Ms. Hamayan and Mrs. Rover. Macrame has been the “it” home decor the last few years, welcome to the next level wall art for 2019. 100 raw wooden disks were hand dipped in Japanese marbling paint by the kids in the class. Each child selected their colors, floated the paint on top of the water and swirled it. After they got their preferred swirls, they hand dipped each disc in the water/paint. Then the discs were connected to each other with O rings and finished with polyurethane to bring out the colors and protect the piece. All evenly balanced, then connected to a natural bird branch and jute rope for hanging on your wall.
