David Geffen signed Black ‘N Blue to his label in ‘84 and they recorded four albums, the last two produced by KISS’ Gene Simmons. Tommy Thayer joined the KISS family at the sounding board and as a musical contributor. Over the years he co-wrote songs and produced CD and DVD projects for the band including the title montage for New Line Cinema’s “Detroit Rock City”. Last year he assumed guitarist Ace Frehley’s Spaceman persona and replaced him completely this year. WIDESPREAD PANIC Street Dogs Widespread Panic has been together going on 30 years. Formed by original members vocalist/guitarist John “JB” Bell, bassist Dave Schools and late guitarist Michael Houser, who lived together in a suburban house in Athens, GA, where they met as students not far from the University of Georgia campus, later to be joined by drummer Todd Nance. Shortly after that, the band’s line-up was solidified with the addition of percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz and keyboard player John “JoJo” Hermann. Formed in the tradition of the great southern guitar blues bands, with an improvisatory ethos, Widespread Panic continue to explore a sound all its own on the band’s 12th album, Street Dogs, their first studio effort since 2010’s Dirty Side Down. When asked to describe Street Dogs, Widespread Panic’s debut album on Vanguard Records, JB references the way Dr. John describes the music scene in New Orleans as “a gumbo of musical influences.” JB cites Van Morrison and George Carlin as influences while Dave (Grateful Dead/Miles Davis), Mike (Emerson Lake and Palmer), Todd (Steely Dan), Sunny (Tito Puente), JoJo (classically trained with a love for Professor Longhair) and Jimmy (Beatles/ Mahavishnu Orchestra) all bring something different to the table. “Above all, after nearly thirty years together, we are arguably each other’s greatest influence,” JB concludes. That eclectic approach includes the funky New Orleans flavor of “Sell Sell,” their cover of The Animals keyboardist Alan Price’s song from the soundtrack of the 1973 Malcolm McDowell film O Lucky Man!, and the playful nod to a missing feline in the gentle prog- rock of “Steven’s Cat,” written and recorded in a single day in the studio. -

Discography Of The Vanguard Label Vanguard Records was established in New York City in 1947. It was owned by Maynard and Seymour Solomon. The label released classical, folk, international, jazz, pop, spoken word, rhythm and blues and blues. Vanguard had a subsidiary called Bach Guild that released classical music. The Solomon brothers started the company with a loan of $10,000 from their family and rented a small office on 80 East 11th Street. The label was started just as the 33 1/3 RPM LP was just gaining popularity and Vanguard concentrated on LP’s. Vanguard commissioned recordings of five Bach Cantatas and those were the first releases on the label. As the long play market expanded Vanguard moved into other fields of music besides classical. The famed producer John Hammond (Discoverer of Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin) came in to supervise a jazz series called Jazz Showcase. The Solomon brothers’ politics was left leaning and many of the artists on Vanguard were black-listed by the House Un-American Activities Committive. Vanguard ignored the black-list of performers and had success with Cisco Houston, Paul Robeson and the Weavers. The Weavers were so successful that Vanguard moved more and more into the popular field. Folk music became the main focus of the label and the home of Joan Baez, Ian and Sylvia, Rooftop Singers, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Country Joe and the Fish and many others. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s, a folk festival was held each year in Newport Rhode Island and Vanguard recorded and issued albums from the those events. -

WELCOME! Festivarians, music lovers, friends old and new... WELCOME to the 27th version of our annual get-together! This year, we can’t help but look back 50 years to the Summer of Love, the summer of 1967, a year that brought us the Monterey Pop Festival (with such performers as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead) which became an inspiration and template for future music festivals like the one you find yourself at right now. But the hippies of that era would likely refer to what’s going on in the political climate of these United States now as a “bad trip” with the old adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” coming back into play. Here we are in 2017 with so many of the rights and freedoms that were fought long and hard for over the past 50 years being challenged, reinterpreted or revoked seemingly at warp speed. It’s high time to embrace the two basic tenets of the counterculture movement. First is PEACE. PEACE for your fellow human, PEACE within and PEACE for our planet. The second tenet brings a song to mind - and while the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band gets all the attention on its 50th anniversary, it’s the final track on their Magical Mystery Tour album (which came out later the same year) that contains the most apropos song for these times. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. LOVE more, fear less. LOVE is always our answer. Come back to LOVE. -

A Q&A with Dave Schools of Hard Working Americans Dave Schools is best known as the bassist for legendary Southern jam band Widespread Panic. But this wailer is no one-trick pony: the Richmond, Virginia, native is also an accomplished producer and a member of the new folk-hippy supergroup Hard Working Americans, which is helmed by Todd Snider. We spoke with Schools recently about producing the group’s debut album and playing bass for this wily group of miscreants. What was your initial reaction to the project when you were first approached about it? An emphatic yes, I said I’d love to do it. Anytime I can get a chance to work with Todd, I’ll take it. He’s such a great, positive, entertaining, and special person. Whether it’s just playing bass behind his music or talking about stuff or a project like this, the answer is yes. So this wasn’t the first time you’d worked with him? It’s the first time in the studio, I think. Todd and his band The Nervous Wrecks opened a lot of shows for [Widespread] Panic sometime back in the mid-’90s, and that’s how we kind of got to know each other. And then we reconnected in Nashville when Panic was touring with the Allman Brothers, celebrating their 40th anniversary. I hadn’t seen Todd in a while. He never fell off the radar or anything personally, but we reconnected and last fall he calls out of the blue and says, “I’m playing a gig at the Napa Opera House, do you want to play with me?” And I’m like “sure,” so we did. -

Susanna Clark March 11, 1939-June 27, 2012 Susanna Talley Clark’s talents transcended songwriting. She was a hit songwriter, an accomplished painter, and an extraordinary muse to many celebrated artists. During the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, Susanna hosted an artist salon in Nashville, where important characters of the growing Americana music movement gathered to share ideas and swap songs. In addition to her husband Guy Clark, Susanna inspired music luminaries Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill, Carlene Carter, Jerry Jeff Walker and countless other writers and artists. Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1939, Susanna met songwriters Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt in the late 1960s. She moved to Houston with Guy in 1970. Later that year, Susanna and Guy moved to Los Angeles together and then to Nashville when Guy got his first publishing deal in 1971. Van Zandt came to Nashville to be the best man when Guy and Susanna married in 1972. He lived with them for the first eight months of their marriage. Guy and Susanna were married. Guy and Townes were best friends. Susanna and Townes were soulmates. Although Guy got most of the credit, it was Susanna who dreamed up and began writing the timeless songs “Black Haired Boy,” (about Townes), “Old Friends,” and “The Cape.” She brought lyrics and simple chords to Guy and he helped her finish them. Susanna and Townes co-wrote “Heavenly Houseboat Blues” and Townes recorded it on The Late Great Townes Van Zandt. Susanna became the hit songwriter in Clark family when she wrote “I’ll Be Your San Antone Rose and Texas artist Dottsy took the song to the Billboard Top 10 in 1975.
