Three years ago we established The Grace as a family of neighborhood churches. It was a dream, a hope, a vision of what we could become – a family of churches rooted in and working for the renewal of our families, friends, coworkers, and neighbors in Denver. We have seen that vision become a clearer reality over the last year (Eastertide 2017 – Eastertide 2018). Our family of churches has matured. We are, and are becoming, a compelling community that is together following the way of .

Countless articles have been written recently about the changing landscape of our city. The population of Denver is swelling, housing is becoming a challenging resource, transportation is a constant concern, and the overall economic growth and cost of living in every corner of the city is rapidly increasing. People are looking for a place to belong in this city now more than ever. We believe the parish model is a valuable and viable model for Denver.

Beyond the cultural changes of our city that reinforce the need for a parish model of church we share a conviction that it is in proximity and relationship that we tangibly practice Jesus’ command to love one another and serve one another. The celebrations are sweeter, the burden is lighter, and the tears of suffering are shared within this family of churches. There have been and will be life lessons we believe we can only learn by leading and living together.

We have seen our people grow deeper and stronger, serve those who are often overlooked or unseen, and all the while become known as a church that throws great parties in celebration. This annual report shares a few of the stories and statistics to show the life of The Sacred Grace over the last year. The road behind, and the road ahead, are filled with moments of sacrifice and support from you, our families, friends, and supporters. Every one of them is important to who we are and who we are becoming. In the words of Frederick Buechner, “in the last and final analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.” Thank you for being a part of our family.

Grace + Peace Jared Mackey Executive Director + Lead Pastor PROBLEM

Our lives are divided.

The impact of the city is we live in disconnected places. Where we live, learn, worship, work, and play does not overlap. We exist in different worlds that we drive into and out of, rarely having those worlds interact with each other.

Our faith lacks integration.

The current model of the Christian church and faith is sadly segmented from our daily life. The place we worship is often disconnected from our neighborhoods, our workplaces, our children’s schools, and the majority of our lives.

Our churches are isolated.

The American church has many encouraging traits but a significant consequence from cultural influence is the way churches can exist autonomous and disconnected from the perspectives of others pastors, leaders, and churches.

POSSIBILITY

The overlap of our lives.

We believe there is an exponential impact in the overlap of where we live, learn, work, and play. The life we want is found in the unplanned and unexpected moments where we share life with our friends and neighbors.

The integration of our faith

We believe the more our faith is rooted in our neighborhoods, the more we will discover that place will form us in meaningful ways. We move in towards each other and out to serve the people and places around us.

A family of churches

We believe churches are called to lead and work together in community. The submission and sacrifice that a family of churches requires creates the context where pastors and churches model the way of Jesus to each other. OUR VISION IS TO SEE A PARISH CHURCH IN

AND FOR EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD IN DENVER.

PRAYER To see God’s Kingdom come to every neighborhood in Denver as it is in .

MISSION We are family of churches working together to join God in the renewal of our lives and our city. We join God in His renewing work by following the way of Jesus. We believe following the way of Jesus is expressed in four movements:

UP We move UP toward God as Father and King through both public corporate worship environments and personal devotional practices.

IN We move IN toward healthy relationships with others and ourselves through both vulnerable friendships and organized opportunities.

OUT We move OUT toward the mission and Kingdom of God through acts of service, generosity, evangelism, and justice.

GRACE We hold GRACE as the defining attribute of the character of God. Grace is why we gather, worship, serve, lead, and love one another. 2017-2018 GOALS & SERIES

We wanted to cultivate the soil of our community UP - IN - OUT.

We wanted to establish regular rhythms of corporate worship and provide practices for personal connection to God.

We wanted to share meals, believing that the table is where all are equal and where everyone is invited and accepted just as they are.

We wanted to listen and learn from those who are leading our city, and show them our support for the leadership and work they do.

We wanted to give of ourselves to those who are overlooked and support those who serve them in our city. PHOTO: JARED MACKEY

CELEBRATION IS SO MUCH

SWEETER WHEN IT’S SHARED.

THE SACRED GRACE ALL PARISH One of the unique gifts of being a family of churches is coming together in seasons of celebration. We hosted All Parish gatherings during + and + that reminded us of the greater story and tradition which we are a part.

ALL PARISH CHRISTMAS PARTY + CAMPAIGN “This is the best Our All Parish Christmas Party kicked off our annual Christmas party Christmas Campaign. It was magical and memorable to have hundreds of friends of The Sacred Grace gather for great I’ve ever been to!” food and drink, holiday music, and the “12 Gifts of Christmas”. HOWIE MILLER, THE SACRED GRACE DONOR Our campaign goal was $25,000, which was surpassed with $29,544 given this year. One of the initiatives our Christmas Campaign supported was the Tennyson Center for Children. They are dedicated to helping children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or trauma so they can bravely and safely change their life’s story. Giving a check for $12,544 to support Tennyson was an inspiring way to end 2017.

CHRISTMAS EVE AT THE GOTHIC Our Advent season ended with a special All Parish Christmas Eve service at the Gothic Theatre. The air was filled with Christmas music, and the aroma of Purple Door Coffee and cookies from Café 180. As candles and glow sticks lit the dark room to end the service there was a tangible sense of the God who becomes flesh and blood and moves into the neighborhood to be with us.

ASH WEDNESDAY + FRIDAY “We celebrated and Our season of Lent was bookended by meaningful worshipped with The and memorable services on and . These two services prepared our Sacred Grace this morning, hearts to create space; space to hear, see, and and boy do they know how respond to God. At the Good Friday to throw an Easter party!” services, Lindy Curry, our KIDS Preschool Director, played two stunning pieces on the harp. SHELBY HILL, THE SACRED GRACE ENGLEWOOD It was a reminder of the many brilliant musical gifts God has given our family of churches.

EASTER AT THE GOTHIC + ACOMA Our first All Parish Easter service and celebration was in 2018. The early morning began with loading chairs, sound, and stage into the Gothic Theatre. Soon tables were set inside and outside Acoma for our community meal of Moe’s BBQ. A bounce house and giant inflatable slide completed the setting for our Easter celebration. There is lots of talk about tables at The Sacred Grace Englewood. It’s fitting that we first discovered the church on a table ad at The Breakfast Queen featuring cartoon versions of Nathan and Julie Hoag. The ad was enough for us to look up more and instantly connect with their story as foster parents.

We were still trying to find our footing in Englewood. We stayed in an Airbnb in December 2014, just blocks from There is lots of talk the building at Acoma. Ariel recognized Nathan and Julie at a thank you picnic for the Englwood City Council Advisory Boards. She insisted that we should go introduce ourselves. They were incredibly encouraging and listened intently to our children’s story. We soon discovered we were connected to The Sacred Grace Englewood through our schools as well as our youngest son's teacher was Shelby Hill, who attended the church as well.

Our first Sunday at The Sacred Grace Englewood was shortly after our finalized adoption. We were welcomed at the door by Nathan, who remembered us, and our story. We immediately felt seen and known. We attended TNL between 2005-2007 before our life detoured; we returned to TNL in 2008. Coming to TNL we each had positive memories, embittered experiences, and a lot of entangled expectations about church. We’ve tried several other churches and there is no other community that lives out “you are accepted here just as you are.” like TNL.

It was at TNL that we were baptized together. The weekly teaching and values of compassion and justice are consistently relevant to our lives. From Tuesday nights to coffee conversations to brunches with friends, we have rhythms in our life because of TNL that are growing us as followers of Christ. It is a safe When we think of place for confession and counsel for us. TNL the first word The most significant rhythm of TNL that has shaped us that comes to is Royal Family Kids Camp. After Ann’s second year of mind is “hope”. volunteering at RFKC, God revealed that it was time for us to prepare for creating a family. Ann spent a couple of weeks trying to persuade Justin about becoming foster parents, but God was already working on him. Abruptly one night Justin said something like “I’m pretty sure God wants us to do more for foster kids; like foster or adopt to start our family.”

Justin volunteered at RFKC the following year, and it began a new chapter in our lives as we prepared to bring children into our lives. We are currently in the process of adopting our two beautiful boys that God has given us.

When we think of TNL the first word that comes The most significant rhythm to mind is “hope”. At TNL, when we see our oldest son, who is often wary of adults, bear hug the of TNL that has shaped us is TNL KIDS volunteers; it is enough to strengthen Royal Family Kids Camp. our hearts on the hardest of days. When we see our youngest son, who can live in a tightly wound ball of anxiety and anger, physically relax when he hears the worship songs and sees the worship team lead TNL every week, we are reminded that God planned this all along.

CLAYTON HOWES, THE SACRED GRACE DONOR FUTURE

2 SQUARE MILES

We believe proximity and place are the basis of parish ministry. The average neighborhood in Denver is approximately 2 square miles with 22,000 people. The focus as we establish new parishes will be a 2 square mile area that the church exists in and for, taking both spiritual and social responsibility over a specific geography.

ESTABLISH P3 & P4

We believe in creating a family of churches that is scalable and sustainable. Having four parishes working together in three different neighborhoods in Denver will hold our of relational connection while providing the financial sustainability for our shared services model.

REACHING 10%

We believe in cultivating relationships and creating opportunities to connect with those who live in each neighborhood we exist. Our goal is for each parish to establish a relational connection with 10% of the neighborhood (approx. 2,000 people) through gatherings, events, and opportunities to move UP - IN - OUT together.

2020: WHERE WE ARE GOING

BY DECEMBER 2020

We will establish 4 churches in and for the renewal of neighborhoods in Denver. We will lead a family of 4 churches that are learning and working together. We will see The Sacred Grace Englewood established as proof of concept of parish ministry. We will confirm the leadership and location for Parish 3 and the pathway for Parish 4. We will make infrastructure improvements to Acoma with a patio, play space, and parking lot. We will see 500 people across 4 churches serve as a winsome witness in their neighborhoods. From His fullness, we have all received grace upon grace. JOHN 1:16

PHOTO: DAN STEINER

The words of John 1:16 serve as the foundation for who we are and what we do. It is grace upon grace that we experience God’s renewal in our lives and in our city.

Thank you for supporting The Sacred Grace. Your giving is essential in establishing our family of churches who are following the way of Jesus together. It is an incredibly exciting time to be a part of the ministry of The Sacred Grace. We have clarity about who we are and where we are going as a family of churches. We invite you to be a part of what God is doing in and through The Sacred Grace.
