Literary Salon at Temescal: New Oakland Noir he Temescal salon series takes a hard-boiled turn this month with two of the most T exciting new voices in the burgeoning genre of noir fiction. Join John Patrick Lang in a launch of his new novel, The Big Bitch (Coffeetown Press), and Rob Pierce, an East Bay-based author of the recently published Uncle Dust (All Due Respect Books). Mr. Lang derived his title from gangland slang for the penitentiary. The novel fea- tures Jackson “Doc” Holiday of Berkeley, who entered the field of private investigations

John Patrick Lang after his elaborate financial scam collapsed, bringing down his luxurious lifestyle. The Big Bitch portrays Holiday’s efforts to solve his first case, one that begins when his buddy, a hard-drinking Latino priest, shows up dead in the back seat of his car. When an editor predicted Mr. Lang is headed to be “known as the new Horace McCoy,” Mr. Lang responded, “[Known] by whom?...Nobody knows who the old Horace McCoy is.” (Horace McCoy, who died in 1955, was the author of pulp classics They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye.) Rob Pierce’s Uncle Dust is a domestic tale narrated by a small-time bank robber and debt collector for a bookie and loan shark. He is juggling his life of crime with relationships with three women and the child of the one he lives with. Mr. Pierce’s novel is receiving rave reviews from noir fans around the world.

Rob Pierce Come meet these two rising stars of crime fiction in this installment of a series of Saturday afternoon salons held at the Temescal Branch Library featuring local residents who are contributing to the cultural fabric of the community. Temescal Branch, Saturday, September 26, 2:30pm
