It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -

THE SECOND DISRUPTION: THE ORIGINS OF THE FREE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF 1893 JAMES LACHLAN MACliDD, HARLAXTON COLLEGE, GRANTHAM Introduction In May 1893, Scotland experienced a Second Disruption when two ministers, Donald Macfarlane of Raasay and Donald Macdonald of Shieldaig, left the Free Church of Scotland. They were followed by a hand-full of students who had been intending to enter the Free Church ministry, as well as a considerable number of Free Church members and adherents. Within a short period of time the new Church which they founded had come to be known as the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland. 1 Another Scottish denomination had been born. There were many reasons why the Free Church, itself the product of the Disruption of 1843,2 split again in 1893; why a Church which was once 'so happily united that you have no right hand and no left in that place'3 became one of the most bitterly-divided denominations in the Protestant world. Within the confines of this paper, though, these reasons will be divided into four basic areas. -30- RESPONSE TO DISRUPTION: PRESBYTERIANISM IN EASTERN ONTARIO, 1844. Burkhard Kiesekamp University of Toronto The pattern of the Disruption of 1844 in Upper Canada1 poses an interesting problem that merits further investigation. If the Bay of Quinte be taken as the boundary between eastern and western Upper Canada, then only twelve percent of the Church of Scotland ministers in the eastern as opposed to forty-eight percent in the western part joined the Free Church in 1844. Expressed as a percentage of the total number of ministers who joined the Free Church in Upper Canada, the contrast becomes even more striking. Only thirteen percent of the Free Church ministers in 1844 served congregations in the eastern districts2. This divergence in the response to the Free Church movement in Upper Canada, and particularly the lack of support for it in the eastern areas of the province, demands further explanation. The settlement of Upper Canada confirms what the above pattern of disruption already suggests, that an emerging regionalism was responsible for these differences in the success of the Free Church movement. The attractions of a fertile soil and a moving frontier in western Upper Canada were largely to blame for this regional diversity. These advantages, which eastern Upper Canada could not offer, drew the immigrants into the western part of the province. Among them were those ministers and settlers who were responsible for importing the disruption to Canada. Having left Scotland after 1830, when church-state relations had become contentious there, these people continued to seek an outlet in Canada for their commitment to the non- intrusionist principles they acquired in Scotland3. -

Graeme Neil Forsyth THE PRESBYTERIAN INTERPRETATION OF SCOTTISH HISTORY, 1800- 1914 Ph. D thesis University of Stirling 2003 ABSTRACT The nineteenth century saw the revival and widespread propagation in Scotland of a view of Scottish history that put Presbyterianism at the heart of the nation's identity, and told the story of Scotland's history largely in terms of the church's struggle for religious and constitutional liberty. Key to. this development was the Anti-Burgher minister Thomas M'Crie, who, spurred by attacks on Presbyterianism found in eighteenth-century and contemporary historical literature, between the years 1811 and 1819 wrote biographies of John Knox and Andrew Melville and a vindication of the Covenanters. M'Crie generally followed the very hard line found in the Whig- Presbyterian polemical literature that emerged from the struggles of the sixteenth and seventeenth century; he was particularly emphatic in support of the independence of the church from the state within its own sphere. His defence of his subjects embodied a Scottish Whig interpretation of British history, in which British constitutional liberties were prefigured in Scotland and in a considerable part won for the British people by the struggles of Presbyterian Scots during the seventeenth century. M'Crie's work won a huge following among the Scottish reading public, and spawned a revival in Presbyterian historiography which lasted through the century. His influence was considerably enhanced through the affinity felt for his work by the Anti- Intrusionists in the Church of Scotland and their successorsin the Free Church (1843- 1900), who were particularly attracted by his uncompromising defence of the spiritual independence of the church. -

The Chapels Society Edinburgh weekend visit notes, 2-4 May 2015 One thing which is soon noticeable when you visit Edinburgh is the profusion and variety of church buildings. There are several factors which help to account for this: The laying out of the ‘New Town’ from the 18th century, north of what is now Princes St, whose population needed to be served by suitable places of worship. Divisions within the Church of Scotland, most notably the Disruption of 1843 which resulted in the formation of the Free Church of Scotland. Revival and revivalism from the late 1850s through to 1905/6, leading to the establishment of evangelical churches and missions from existing churches. The desire of every denomination to establish a presence within Scotland’s capital, often of a suitably imposing and aesthetically satisfying nature (the Catholic Apostolic Church offers a prime example of this). The planting of new congregations in post-war suburban housing areas, although many of these have struggled to establish themselves and closures have already occurred. The arrival of new denominations, some taking over buildings constructed for Presbyterian use. For example, Holy Corner (that’s what you ask for on the bus!), around the junction of Morningside Rd and Colinton Rd, you can see Christ Church (Scottish Episcopal), Baptist (now Elim Pentecostal), United (now Church of Scotland / United Reformed), and the Eric Liddell Centre (formerly Church of Scotland). As a student here in the late 1970s, I remember the buses being busy with people travelling to Sunday morning worship. That may not be so now, but a surprising quantity of church buildings remain in use for worship. -

Stevenson's Scottish Christmas Story: ''The Midadventures of John Nicholson", The Free Church, and the Prodigal Son Stevenson probably began writing "The Misadventures of John Nicholson" at the end of October 1885, just after he had completed The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, intending to publish it in the Christmas number of the Court and Society Review. However, after "struggling" for less than a week, he put the story to one side and did not return to it until the following year:1 as he wrote to Sidney Colvin on 14 December 1886, I have been writing ... a dam tale to order, which will be what it will be: I don't love it, but some of it is passable in its mouldy way, The Misadventures of John Nicholson.2 As before, Stevenson may have intended the story to appear at Christmas of that year, but by January 1887 it had still not been published and he wrote to Henry James about his "silly Xmas story (with some larks in it) which won't be out till I don't know when."g As Roger G. -
