Gator MEN at a Glance 2016-17 SEASON NOTES Three NCAA teams titles in the fi nal 36 days of the 2016-17 season pushed Florida to third in the 2016-17 Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup. It was Flor- ida’s ninth consecutive top-fi ve fi nish in the all-sports rankings. Florida is the only program to fi nish among the top 10 in each of the last 34 national all-sports standings. NCAA team titles by baseball, women’s tennis and men’s outdoor track & fi eld gives Florida 18 national titles in the last nine seasons. Florida is one of four Division I programs to win at least one national title each of the last nine seasons. Six conference titles earned by Florida teams in 2016-17. Florida took fi ve Southeastern Conference titles – baseball, women’s golf, softball, men’s swimming & diving and volleyball. The Gators also took their third BIG EAST lacrosse title.     DICK HOWSER TROPHY COMMITTEE Contact: Bo Carter ([email protected]) June 16, 2018 FLORIDA’S SINGER CHOSEN AS 2018 DICK HOWSER TROPHY RECIPIENT OMAHA, Neb. – Pitcher Brady Singer, regarded as one of the top pitchers in the storied history of Florida Gators baseball, is the 32nd recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, as college baseball's Player of the Year. Singer joins UF’s and Seattle Mariners catcher Mike Zunino (2012) as the first two Gators standout to capture the Howser Trophy. The Howser Trophy committee and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced the award Saturday at a national news conference at TD Ameritrade Park prior to the opening game of the 72nd annual NCAA Division I Baseball College World Series. Singer is the seventh student-athlete from the Southeastern Conference to win the trophy and third in five years after the awards went to A.J. Reed of Kentucky and the Houston Astros in 2014 and Andrew Benintendi of Arkansas and the Boston Red Sox in 2015. Singer, a 6-5, 220-pound right-handed pitcher from Eustis, Florida, was the 2018 SEC Pitcher of the Year. He also garnered 2018 consensus first team All-American honors and was the No. 18 player chosen in the recent Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals, the organization Dick Howser managed to the 1985 World Series crown. His most recent pitching outing was against fellow 2018 Dick Howser Trophy finalist pitcher Casey Mize of Auburn on June 9. Singer outdueled the AU mound star with 6 2/3 innings pitched, nine strikeouts, two walks, two runs (both earned), and a key 8-2 win by the Gators to open the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional.

On the final rotation Saturday night -- the uneven bars -- Florida needed a 9.95 or better to win its third consecutive NCAA gymnastics title. All McMurtry did was execute her best routine of the season, earning a career-best 9.95 to propel the Gators a final score of 197.850 and the national championship. “I didn’t necessarily know what score I had to get,” McMurtey said. “I think that would have made it even harder for me so I knew I had a job to do and I knew my teammates had my back. Going last is sometimes a good position, sometimes a bad position, and we had five girls hit routines so I knew my teammates had my back and I just had to do my job. It all worked out for me and that was one of the best routines of my career.” “It’s amazing that she came out under this heavy pressure situation as a freshman and performed as well as she did everywhere,” Florida head coach Rhonda Faehn said.“To anchor that bar lineup, to have that fight for every little thing, it’s not only amazing, it speaks volumes for what she will continue to bring to this team in the future, which is exciting.” Faehn had her back to the scoreboard and paid no attention to the other teams competing.
