Qualifications

I have participated in a wide variety of rallies both high performance stage rallies (both gravel and tarmac stages), Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rallies, economy runs, and time- speed rallies in the , , , and Mexico in both summer and winter conditions. I have also on seven occasions successfully competed in Targa Newfoundland, a tarmac rally event, in both the Touring Class and the fastest Targa Classes. I have also successfully competed in the Nevada Open Road Challenge, a very high speed tarmac event. I have competed in La Carrera Panamericana and the Chihuahua Express rallies in Mexico which are high speed tarmac events. I have worked control points in several rallies and have been a Stage Captain at a national stage rally, so I understand how rallies are run. I have also been the co-rallymaster for a time-speed- distance rally that was held on tarmac and this will continue on an annual basis. I also have been the Chief Steward at a national gravel stage rally.

This wide blend of rally experience is not common. I have competed with a number of drivers in different and a wide variety of navigation and timing equipment. I have experience with preparing and using recce notes as well as the use of Jemba-prepared stage notes. In addition, I have considerable experience in “blind” rallies. I have experience in rallies where the route is indicated on a map only. Further, I have experience in “Monte Carlo” style rallies in the USA and in Germany.

I can adapt quickly to any situation. I am comfortable with speed and have never suffered from motion sickness. I am competitive, but am mature enough to know when to push and when to let up. I am easy to get along with and have been asked back to compete with them again in another rally with every driver with whom I have rode.

I am a civil engineer working for a consulting engineering firm. Through this training and experience I am very proficient with numbers, mathematics, and maps. I have studied navigation and co-driving methods and techniques to improve my own techniques and to help others. I can provide my own navigational equipment for almost any set of rules should the need arise. I am experienced in both “blind” rallies and with course or stage notes.

I have a lifelong interest in cars. I currently drive a Mercedes-Benz 230SLK but I also have a 1979 Saab 99.. In the summer I regularly ride a new Triumph Bonneville motorcycle and I am a member of the British Iron Association of Massachusetts, a club dedicated to British motorcycles. I also publish information on , cars, racing, and motorcycles on my website www.stevemckelvie.com

I have been a Licensed Rally Co-Driver through , Targa Newfoundland, and I also have had competition licenses for NASA Rallysport, Rally New York, and for the FMAD in Mexico.

I have experience working at rallies both at the stage starting lines and as a stage marshal along the route of the rally at national stage rally events in both Canada and the United States.

I am the past Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) North East Division Road Rally Steward overseeing the road rally program in the following states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, a portion of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.

I am also a member of the SCCA New England Region Rally Board.

I was the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his 2002 Mini Cooper S. We had two significant offs into the snow banks that cost us a tremendous amount of time. After the event it was discovered that we had a failure of the right rear coil-over shock. We finished 12th in the Intermediate Class and were the last running car in our class.

Frost Heave Rally, Loudon, New Hampshire, March: This was a New England Region SCCA time-speed-distance rally. This was the first year that this event has been run. I was navigator for Jon Butzke in his 1979 Saab 99. We ran in Class C, “Taped odometer”. We had some very good scores, finished 6th overall and third in class. In our class we won half the legs but had a couple of bad scores that caused us to fall back.

Rally New York, Monticello, New York, April: This was a NASA performance gravel/tarmac rally. The organizers issued Jemba-prepared notes and one day of recce was permitted to go over the route and modify the notes if necessary. I was the co-driver for Dave Seisicki in his 1984 P1 Class Audi Quattro 4000. We had a good rally, finishing with no offs, mechanical difficulties, or road penalties. We finished 22 out of 65 starters. We were 11th in the P1 class which was dominated by a large number of Mitsubishi Evos from the Irish Motorsports Club from New York City.

Nevada Open Road Challenge, Ely, Nevada, May: This is the fastest open road race in the world. I was co-driver for Rick MacLeod in his 2000 Mustang convertible. This car had been dyno-tested to 488 horsepower at the rear wheels. We were entered in the 130 miles per hour class which was the fastest class that we were permitted to enter as event rookies. The goal was to average 130 mph over the total 90-mile course. In our class, the car’s minimum speed was restricted to 100 mph and the maximum speed was limited to 165 mph. We finished 3rd in class with 0.28 seconds off the perfect time for the 90- mile course. Our top speed through the speed trap section was 165 mph.

Encinada Open Road Race, Encinada, Mexico, June: I turned down an offer from Klaus Selbert of St. Louis, MO to be the co-driver in his 1953 Porsche 356 in this event due to a planned family vacation. This event is similar to the Nevada Open Road Challenge.

8

Big Lap VIII, Loudon, New Hampshire, June: I was the navigator for Greg Miller in his 2003 4x4 GMC Truck in this New England SCCA TSD road rally. We ran in the Stock Class using the stock odometer only. We finished first in our class and we were third overall. We had a better score than all of the Limited Class cars with adjustable odometers. I also worked as a checker, checking the score sheets at the end of the rally.

Baie-des-Chaleurs Rallye, New Richmond, Quebec, Canada, July: This is one of Canada’s premier performance gravel rallys. This CARS National event was held in the area around New Richmond, Quebec. I was the co-driver for Dave Siesicki in his 1984 Audi Quattro 4000 in the Open Class in the National competition. For the first time in this rally’s history full recce was allowed. We traversed the course twice making our own stage/pace notes. We had a good rally finishing 21st Overall, 8th in the Open Class and 7th Novice. It rained during the rally which made the roads slippery on Friday night and on Saturday morning.

Maine Forest Pro Rally, Rumford, Maine, July: This is a fast, rough performance SCCA Pro Rally held on the forest roads of Maine. I co-drove for Keith Kreisler in his Open Class Subaru. For this event we were provided with Jemba-prepared stage notes. We had some very good stage times but did have problems with a broken wheel and two flats from hitting a rock on one stage, getting caught behind a car in a cloud of dust, and finally another flat on stage eventually got caught on suspension parts, which led to the decision to withdraw before more serious damage could occur.

Targa Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Canada, September: This was a 2,200 km long tarmac rally with over 500 km of competitive kilometers divided into 38 stages. This rally used the FIA method for timing. I co-drove for Rick MacLeod in his 2000 Mustang convertible in the Class 9 Modified class. This class had the fastest cars in the event. We finished 2nd in class behind the factory sponsored Canadian Subaru Rally Team. We made all of our Targa Trophy Times to receive a Targa Plate and also received a Finisher’s Medal.

Black River Stages, Harrisville, NY, September: I was entered to again co-drive for Keith Kriesler in his Subaru, but the rally was cancelled due to a lack of entries.

Trunk Monkey Midnight Run Rally, Manchester, New Hampshire, October: This was the first running of this SCCA New England Region TSD event. The rally started in the late afternoon and ended near midnight. I navigated for Greg Miller in his 2003 Chevrolet 4x4 Pickup. We competed in the Stock Class (no adjustable odometers) and finished 1st in Class and 4th overall.

Lanark Highlands Rally, Maberly, Ontario, Canada, October: This was a brisk TSD event held over some of the stages used for the 1974 running of the Rideau Lakes Rally when it was part of the . This was a special 30th anniversary of that event. I was the co-driver for Dave Siesicki in his 1984 Audi Quattro 4000 stage rally car. Unfortunately we had a DNF due to a failure of the alternator before the

9 midway break. We competed in the Intermediate Class. This was Dave’s first TSD event.

Covered Bridge Rally, Ludlow, Vermont, November: This was the 38th running of this SCCA New England Region/North East Division Rally. It was also eligible for National points. I was the navigator for Greg Miller in his ZR2 Chevy Truck. We finished 3rd in the Stock Class and 12th overall. We were only a few points behind the 2nd place team.

Rally of the Tall Pines, Bancroft, Ontario, November: This was the final CARS National Championship event of 2004. I again co-drove with Keith Kreisler in his Open Class Subaru. We set some fast stage times. We started the rally as the 22nd seeded car but after three stages, we were re-seeded in the top 10 cars. After Stage A7 we had set the 4th fastest stage time and were placed 5th overall. We then had a series of flat and bent A-arms. We DNF’d on the final stage with two flat tires and a broken rear suspension.

2005

Vermont Winter Rally, Colhchester, VT, January: This was a brisk winter TSD rally pit on by rally legend John Buffum. I was the navigator for Greg Miller in his Chevy Z71 4x4 pickup truck in the Stock Class – must use only stock odo and four function calculator. This was a very tough rally. At total of 35 cars started the rally. We finished 3rd in the Stock Class out of 17 finishers. We finished so close to the second place car that an improvement of 1% would have put us in second place. A total of 19 cars started in our class. We stopped during one section to pull a fellow competitor out of the ditch who had rolled out of the ditch. This rally required the simultaneous reading of the route instructions and a provided map. For this rally I built a homemade version of a “potti”, only with a square shape.

Sno*Drift Performance Rally, Atlanta, MI, January: I was asked by Keith Kreisler to co-drive with him should a possible sponsor be found. Keith had been approached about such an arrangement by a rally car preparation shop. This deal eventually fell through and we did not enter this event.

Snowy Safari, Minden, Ontario, January: I was asked by Harald von Langsdorff to again navigate for him in his 2002 Mini Cooper S. I agreed to do this, but subsequently the date of the rally changed by one weekend. This date changed resulted in a business conflict and I was forced to withdraw from this rally.

Ontario Winter Rally, Coe Hill, Ontario, February: This is a very brisk winter TSD rally of the type known in Ontario as a “drivex”. Many of the rally roads are over the same stages used in the Rally of the Tall Pines stage rally. I was the navigator for Dave Getchell in his Subaru 2.5 RS. We finished 23rd Overall out of 60 entries. In the Intermediate Class we finished 8th out of 21 entries. We did quite well and could have

10 easily shaved several minutes off our time. There were many top rally teams there from Ontario and the northeast USA. Many of these top teams finished behind us.

Snow & Ice Rally, Little Falls, New York, March: This was a Northeast Division TSD rally put on by the SCCA Central Region. The rallymaster was David Lewis with whom I had competed before and the rally co-chair was Mark Johnson with whom I had also competed before, is a friend, and had served as stage rally crew for me before. Because of this and that my regular TSD driver was away on a business trip, I offered to help run the rally. I was part of a control team with Eric Hobron. We ran every other control point. We timed the cars into Leg 1, assigned the out times, then quickly drove to the control point for Leg 3 and did the same thing throughout the day, alternating with the other control team. It was very interesting and lots of fun.

Frost Heave, Loudon, New Hampshire, March: In order to qualify for the New England Region Road Rally Championship it is necessary to work at a New England Region Rally. Therefore as my M2 Rally Team driver was away on business, I volunteered to work at this New England Region TSD rally. The day was very snowy as over 9-inches of snow fell during the day. Emergency speeds were used during the rally. Twenty percent DNF’d as a result of the snow. Due to the storm there was a shortage of workers so I ran four controls by myself.

Essex County V Rally, Massachusetts, May: This was a “Monte Carlo” style TSD rally that was part of the SCCA New England Rally championship. In this rally we were given the location of the controls, but were not given the speeds between the controls. I navigated for Greg Miller in his yellow Chevy ZR-1 pickup truck as a member of the M2 Rally Team. We finished first in the Stock Class and 5th Overall.

Susquehannock Trails Pro Rally, Pennsylvannia, June: This was a national performance gravel stage rally sanctioned by Rally America. I was the co-driver for Keith Kreisler in his Open Class Subaru STI. We DNF’d at the end of the first stage after we jumped into the water splash and hit a submerged rock. This resulted in a broken oil filter mount to the engine block.

Baie Des Chaleurs Rallye, New Richmond, Quebec, July: This was a CARS National Championship performance gravel rally event. I was the co-driver for David Siesicki in his 1984 Audi Quattro 4000. This was a full recce event in which we prepared our own notes. We DNF’d on the National portion of the event after the first stage when it was discovered that our re-manufactured alternator was not working. We entered the Ontario Regional portion of the rally on Saturday morning using (rotating and charging) three batteries and running on minimal electrics. For simple navigation we used a hand held GPS unit. We finished 10th in the Ontario Regional portion of the rally.

Trunkmonkey: Run For the Border, Lebanon, New Hampshire, July: This was a SCCA New England Championship TSD Road Rally. The rally started and ended in Lebanon, New Hampshire but was all run in Vermont. I was the navigator for Tim Chevalier in his 2003 Wagon. We ran in Class C, No Odometer. We

11 finished first in class and 4th overall. We scored 148; however we scored 81 on the first leg and only 67 on the remaining 9 legs.

Targa Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Canada, September: For the second year in a row I was asked by Rick MacLeod to be his co-driver in this week long, 2500 kilometer long, all tarmac rally. We finished third in the Unlimited Class behind our Mach One Racing team mate. The car we had was a 1999 Mustang with a dynoed 610 horsepower at the rear wheels. We had several rainy days that made the roads quite slippery especially for a high horsepower rear wheel drive car. We finished ahead of both Chrysler factory team entries.

Lanark Highlands Rally, Maberly, Ontario, Canada, October: This was a brisk gravel TSD “Drivex” event held over stages that were used in the 1974 Rally of Rideau Lakes when it was part of the WRC season. I had planned on running the event with David Siesicki, but he had car trouble. I obtained a ride with Andrew Mack in his Mazda MX-6, a novice rallyist but with Solo 2 experience. We ran in the Novice Class, had a good run and finished third in class. The stock odometer could not be used so for distance information we relied on my hand held GPS unit.

Covered Bridge Rally, Fairlee, Vermont, November: I was entered in this event with Greg Miller as part of the M2 Rally Team but we had to withdraw at the last moment due to mechanical problems with the rally truck.

Pine Barrens Express, Lakewood, New Jersey, November: This event is a challenging TSD event through the Pine Barrens and around the cranberry bogs in New Jersey. Virtually none of the roads have any street signs and the forst is quite dense. I was the navigator for Greg Miller in his ZR1 Chevy truck. We ran in the Stock class. We were doing quite well until we made a mistake at a confusing intersection which result in such a significant time loss that we were no longer competitive.

Maine Forest Winter Rally, Rumford, Maine, December: This was the revival of a winter snow fast stage rally that had not been held since 2002. I was the co-driver for Chris Sanborn in his 1996 Ford Cosworth. We had a fuel leak after the first stage. During the second stage we had two offs and a flat tire. This damaged the front brakes and we decided to withdraw after that stage.

2006

Vermont Winter Rally, Barre, VT, January: This was a “brisk” TSD rally put on by rally legend John Buffum through the frozen woods of Vermont. I was the navigator for Greg Miller in his Chevy pickup “The Yellow Truck”. The event started at 9:30 PM on Saturday night and ended at 5:30 AM on Sunday morning. The rally was divided into three legs. The middle leg was indicated on a map only. In the portion of the event that

Subaru Winter Rally, Smith Falls, Ontario, Canada, January: This was the first running of a “brisk” winter rally put on the Vehicle Development Group. The rally started and ended in Smith Falls, Ontario. I was the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his 2002 MINI Cooper S. The rally started at 10:00 PM on Saturday and ended at 6:30 AM on Sunday. A total of 40 cars were entered. We were leading a large Novice Class after the first leg but in the two later legs time lost to two minor “offs” and helping to extract two other cars resulted in a 4th in class and 12th overall.

I was the co-driver for Dave Getchell in his Subaru RS and we were entered in the Open Class. In this event we were given prepared notes and then we had an opportunity to do a one-pass parade style recce the day before the competition. We had a great run going until the second last stage when we became stuck in the snow helping to extract another car. We lost a lot time and eventually finished 15th overall.

Championship Sur De Glace, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, February: This is an ice racing event on a flooded track. A number of Andros Ice Racing cars from and North American rally cars were entered. This is door-to-door racing. I was offered a ride as a co-driver by Dave Getchell but I turned him down because of my heavy rally schedule at that time.

Ontario Winter Rally, Coe Hill, Ontario, Canada, February: This is a “brisk” winter rally that included a field of the top rally people in Ontario and the north-east USA. Sixty teams started this rally. The rally started and ended in Coe Hill, Ontario. Many of the roads used are the same roads that are used for the Rally of the Tall Pines stage rally that is held in the fall. I was the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his 2002 MINI Cooper S. The rally started at 10:00 PM on Saturday and ended at 7:00 AM on Sunday. We had a good rally with no offs despite the icy roads. We finished 23rd Overall and 7th in the Intermediate Class.

We finished ahead of Pat Richard, Canadian and US Rally Champion.

Lanark Highlands, Maberly, Ontario, October: This is a brisk overnight navigational rally known in Canada as a “drivex”. I was the navigator for Dave Siesicki in his 1988 Mazda 323GTX. We had a very good run. In the first half of the rally our rally odometer was not functional so we used the stock odo which registered in miles while the instructions were in kilometers. Despite that we zeroed 5 out of 10 control points. We had a problem with checking into the main time control at the mid-rally break. In the second half we were tied for third overall on time.

Team O’Neil Rally, Dalton, New Hampshire, October: This was the first time that this gravel stage rally had been held. I was the co-driver for Dave Getchell in his Subaru Impreza 2.5 non-turbo rally car. In a field of 23 cars we finished 7th Overall. The car ran well and we had no problems of any significance.

2007

Forty cars entered the rally. I was the navigator for Dave Siesicki in his 1992 Honda CRX. The rally was divided into three distinct parts. We had a great first section finishing 2nd Overall. The second section was not a successful for us as we finished mid-field. We did quite well on the third section which enabled us to finish 2nd in Class 1 and Overall in the Vermont Winter Rally.

Targa Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Canada, September: Fourth year in a row, I was the co-driver for Rick MacLeod in his high-horsepower Mustang. This week long tarmac rally covers a little more than 2,000 kilometres throughout Newfoundland. There were approximately 35 stages over the five competitive days of the race. We competed in the Unlimited Class and finished third in class.

La Carrera Panamericana, Mexico, October: This is a 2,000 mile long tarmac rally that started in the south end of Mexico in the city of Oaacca and raced back to Nuevo Laredo at the US/Mexico border. This is a very high speed event. I was the co-driver or co-piloto for Rob Stuart in his newly built 1965 Corvette Coupe with a highly tuned 327 cubic inch V8 engine. We competed in the Historic C class. After the end of the first day we were 13th out of 97 cars, one second behind famed raced, Jerry Churchill. On the second day we had a very serious off when we hit and tree and the car burst into flames.

14

The car completely burned and I barely got out of the car. I was taken to a Mexican hospital and was treated for second degree burns. Our rally was over.

Covered Bridge Rally, Vermont, November: I was the navigator for Dave Siesicki in his 1988 Merkur. This is a gravel time-speed-distance rally on some scenic back roads in Vermont. We finished third in the Equipped Class and Overall.

Most of the cars entered are older or vintage cars. Many of the entrants and the cars have competed in the Great Race. Harald von Langsdorff and I entered this rally as practice for the upcoming Great Race. We entered my 1988 Merkur as it was easier to get my car there than for Harald to bring a car down from Ontario. Harald drove the car and I was the navigator. There were approximately 35 cars entered and we finished about mid- pack. It was a good learning experience for us.

Great Race, Three-Day entry, June: I was scheduled to navigate for Harald von Langdorff in the Great Race in his 1918 American La car. We were entered to do a three-day entry from Buffalo, NY through Toronto, Ontario and then on to Ottawa and Sudbury, Ontario. This was a time-speed rally that would be all on tarmac. Unfortunately, the Great Race organization went declared bankruptcy the event was cancelled.

Targa Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Canada, September: Once again I was the co- driver for Rick MacLeod in his Mustang in this 2,000 kilometre tarmac rally held over 5 days. Unfortunately we blew the engine on the afternoon of the second day and our rally was over.

Pumpkin Run Rally, Millsboro, Delaware, October: This was a three-day time-speed rally that was made up of mostly older cars put on by the Northeast Rally Club. I was the navigator for Harald von Langdorff in his 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL. We competed in the SOP “Seat of the Pants” class because we did not have a custom calibratable speedometer. We used the stock speedometer in the Mercedes. The event actually consisted of two rallies – one for Friday only and the other totaled the score for Saturday and Sunday. We won our class for both rallies and finished 6th Overall!

2009

Long Way Home Rally, Piffard, NY, January: This rally was part of the five-event Finger Lakes Winter Rally Series. These are brisk winter evening rallies over the rolling area of upstate New York. I was the navigator for Brian Fallon in his Mazda RX-3 in the Equipped Class. We used Brian’s Alfa Elite rally computer. We got massively held up behind a string of cars that could not make it up a steep unplowed hill. We also had trouble getting gas into the car due to a faulty gas tank flap. We got so far behind due to these difficulties that we withdrew before the rally was over.

WWF Rally, Holcomb, NY, January: This was the second event in the five-event Finger Lakes Winter Rally Series of brisk winter rallies. I was the navigator for Jerry Kerwin in his Mitsubishi Evo. We competed in the Limited Class using Jerry’s Alfa Pro rally odometer/clock. We finished a close 4th in class.

Winter Challenge Rally, Barre, Vermont, February: This is an all night brisk winter rally with legendary rally driver John Buffum as rallymaster. I was the navigator in the Equipped Class as Dave Siesicki drove my 1988 Merkur. We had some difficulties getting delayed behind some cars that could not get up an icy hill. We withdrew and drove directly to the end of the rally.

Rally New York USA, Ellensville, NY, April: This was a fast stage rally held on tarmac put on by the Rally New York people. I was the co-driver for Steve Levesque in his 1993 BMW M3 rally car. Stage notes were provided by the organizer but two pass recce was allowed to check the notes. We had some mechanical difficulties with the radiator which led to a substantial overheating problem. We set some good stage times but had to withdraw as the engine was not sounding good.

Penn-York Rally, Beach , Pennsylvania, May: This was another three-day time- speed rally put on by the Northeast Rally Club. No odometers are allowed. I was the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL. We competed in the SOP Class as we used the stock odometer on the Mercedes. The overall rally weekend was comprised of one rally on Friday and another rally that totaled the results for Saturday and Sunday. We won our class in both rallies!

Rally Tennessee, Tennessee, May: This was a stage rally held on tarmac. I was asked to co-drive for Steve Levesque in my 1993 BMW M3 rally car, but subsequently he was unable to get the car’s engine repaired in time after Rally New York so he withdrew his entry.

SCR24 Rally, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, June: The rally actually consisted of two 12- hour time-speed-distance rallies run back to back to create a 24-hour rally. The rally started at noon on Saturday and ended at noon on Sunday. The rally covered roads in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia. I was the navigator for Afshin Montazeri in his 2008 Lexus IS250. This was Afshin’s first TSD rally although

16 he has competed at Targa Newfoundland on many occasions. We were entered in the Limited Class and we used my Alfa Pro rally odometer/clock. We finished second in class in both rallies and also overall in our class.

Targa Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Canada, September: I was scheduled to co- drive for Rick MacLeod again in his Mustang in this week long tarmac fast rally, but things came up in Rick’s life that caused him to withdraw his intent to compete in the rally this year. I was asked to be the back-up co-driver by several teams should their co- drivers not be able to make it to the event.

Mount Ascutney Hill Climb, Windsor, Vermont, September: I was entered to co- drive for Steve Levesque in his BMW M3 in the rally class, but two days before the event Steve had to withdraw due to a business conflict.

Bridgehampton Road Rally, Bridgehampton, NY, October: This was a vintage navigational rally using Monte Carlo timing. I was entered to navigate for Harald von Langsdorff in his Mercedes-Benz 220A but due to insufficient entries the rally portion of the weekend was changed to a tour. Our entry was withdrawn as we had wanted to have the competition of the rally.

Kennebunks Road Rally, Kennebunkport, Maine, October: This was primarily a GTA rally (no timing just route following and questions based on stop locations along the route) that featured a large number of vintage cars. I entered my Mercedes-Benz SLK230 and had Dave Siesiski do the driving.

La Carrera Panamericana, Mexico, October: I was asked by Rob Stuart to be his co- piloto once again in this event. He is building up a new 1965 Mustang and as the car will not be fully sorted out in time, Rob subsequently withdrew his entry.

Economy Run IV, Fulton, NY, November: This event was an economy run event where the best performance was judged by the cars that achieved the best overall fuel economy. The event was hosted by the Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club and was held in Fulton, NY. I entered my 2003 Mercedes-Benz SLK230. The car was not prepared in any way for the event. It was entered as a “bone stock” car. I achieved a fuel consumption rate of fractionally less than 40 miles per US gallon. The winning car, which was an aerodynamically prepared Honda Civic got about 95 mpg.

Covered Bridge Rally, Ludlow, Vermont, November: The was the 43rd running of this New England Region TSD rally. I was the navigator for Dave Siesicki in his Honda Civic. We ran in the Equipped Class using an Alfa Elite rally computer. We finished 6th Overall in a field of 30 cars.

2010

17

Long Way Home Rally, Piffard, NY, January: This rally was the first of the five event Finger Lakes Winter Rally Series. This is a series of brisk winter rallies through the hills in the Finger Lakes area. I was the navigator for Dave Siesicki in his Honda Civic. We ran in the Equipped Class using the Alfa Elite rally computer in Speed Class B or at an average speed of 40 mph. With the snow, this was the right speed to be driving at although there was a 50% timing penalty compared to those in Speed Class A or driving at a 45 mph average speed. We finished had a good rally finishing 4th in class and 8th Overall in a field of just over 20 cars.

New York Winter Rally, Narrowsburg, NY, January: This was a new event, the first New York Winter Rally pit on by the same organization (New York Rally) who put on the Rally New York and the International Rally New York. I was the co-driver for Steve Levesque in his 1991 BMW M3. There was not a lot of snow, but the roads were quite icy due to some melting and re-freezing that had occurred in the days before the rally. Due to a flat tire we were not able to recce the entire route. We finished first in the 2WD Production Class. About 22 cars started the event and we finished 10th Overall.

Perce Neige Rally, Maniwaki, Quebec, Canada, February: At the request of Clarke Paynter I was asked to help out at this Canadian National Rally Series Championship event. This is the only winter stage rally in the Canadian Championship. Our group worked the Start Control for Stages 11 and 12, which ran at night. I also was a Marshall in the morning re-fueling area. It was very cold during the day and got colder at night. I enjoyed helping at this Canadian championship event. I had competed in the rally twice before.

Winter Challenge, Barre, Vermont, February: This event encompasses two rallies held at one time through the snowy mountain roads of Vermont. I was the navigator for Dave Siesicki in his 2WD Honda Civic Si. In the first rally, the New England Winter Rally we finished 3rd Overall in a field of approximately 30 cars. This rally was a very tricky “lightly trapped” rally. The second rally, Vermont Winter Rally, is a very brisk rally set out by John Buffum, a multi-time SCCA Pro Rally Champion. In that event, despite being in the lowest horsepower car in the field and one of only two 2WD cars, we finished 1st Overall, in a field that was diminished to 24 cars! This was quite an achievement in this event, given the road conditions and the quality of the other entrants as only experienced rally people were permitted to enter.

Chihuahua Express, Chihuahua, Mexico, March: This was a three-day tarmac stage rally based in Chihuahua, Mexico. I was the co-piloto for Rob Stuart in his newly built 1966 Ford Mustang. We had some problems with the fuel delivery system which effected almost every stage that we ran in although the second day was much better than the first day. After the first day we were 24th Overall. At the end of the second day we were 16th Overall and 5th out of 10 cars in our class. Unfortunately the rally was ended after the end of the second day. There had been a fatality on the first day when a co- piloto in another car was killed. Then on the transit back to the rally headquarters two of the competitors got to racing each other and a crash happen in which two competitors

18 were killed. So after the three deaths, the organizer cancelled the remaining day of the rally.

Rally New York, Walton, New York, April: This was a two-day tarmac stage rally in the Catskill Mountains of New York. I was the co-driver for Steve Levesque in his 1991 BMW M3. The rally was held in weather that was rainy and snowy with a little bit of sun. We only entered the Regional Event – not the USRC portion. We finished 2nd in the Production 2WD class on the first day and we then finished 1st in the Production 2WD class on the second day.

Baden Classic, Baden, Germany, April: This was a two-day classic car rally in Germany in which I was entered as the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet. As a result of massive flight cancellations due to volcanic ash from a volcano in Iceland, my flight (and trip) was cancelled, so I was unable to compete in this rally.

Rally Tennessee, Linden, TN, May: This was a 158-mile long tarmac stage rally based in Linden, Tennessee under the NASA sanctioning body. I was the co-driver for Steve Levesque in his BMW M3. Unfortunately we had an “off” on Stage 3 which resulted in a DNF for us. The car’s radiator, hood, windshield and other front end body damage made the car undriveable. We had set good times in the first two stages and had been about 6th Overall when our “off” occurred.

Big Lap Rally, Laconia, New Hampshire, June: This was a time-speed-distance rally put on by the New England Region of the SCCA. The roads used were a mix of gravel and asphalt. I was the navigator for Dave Siesicki in his Honda Civic. We competed in Class A as we used my full rally computer the Alfa Elite. We had some very good scores but unfortunately we had problems on one leg in particular and ended up finishing in 5th position Overall.

Economy Run/Rally, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, June: This event was the first Economy Run that had been held by the Sport Motor Car Club of Montreal in decades. This event was a combination economy run and rally. There was an adjustment made to the raw fuel consumption based on how well the car achieved the rally timing. I was the navigator for Mike Kamm in his 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R. We finished second overall on the basis of our raw fuel consumption, but on an adjustment basis we were declared the Overall winners because we had a better timing performance in the rally side of the scoring. We achieved almost 58 miles per gallon. The rally started and was held in the area north east of Montreal, Quebec.

New England Forest Rally, Newry, Maine, July: I volunteered to work at this Rally America championship series gravel stage rally. I was assigned to the starting line for Stages 2 and 3 at the Mexico Recreation area and I was a stage marshal on Stages 6, 7, and 8. I registered as a licensed Rally America Stage Worker.

19

Black River Stages Rally, Harrisville, NY, September: This was a gravel stage performance rally that was sanctioned by NASA and was part of the Atlantic Rally Series. Covered Bridge Rally, Stratton, VT, November: This was a time-speed-distance rally that was part of the New England Region rally season. The rally was held on both gravel and paved roads throughout southern Vermont. I was the navigator for Frank Beyer in his Subaru Forester. We finished 6th Overall despite having the rally computer’s clock get off time which cost us a large time penalty on one leg in the afternoon. We had been in second place after the morning portion.

Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), December: Selected by the SCCA as the North East Division Road Rally Steward with responsibilities to oversea all of the SCCA rallies in the northeast USA which includes all of the New England states, New York, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and a portion of Ohio.

2011

Son of Sno*Drift Rally, Waterford, Michigan, January: This was a TSD rally put on by the Detroit Region of the SCCA as part of the Great Lakes rally championship. This event was also the first event in the new WINTR Series. I was the navigator for Frank Beyer in his Subaru Forester. We competed in the Equipped Class. I was navigating for Frank Beyer in his Subaru Forester. We competed in the “Expert” Class and finished fourth in class and fourth Overall. This was a very good finish for us as it was the first Quebec winter TSD rally that either Frank or I had competed in. There was a good field of USA and local rally experts. This event counted towards the WINTR rally series.

Ohio Winter Rally, Solon, Ohio, February: This event was a winter TSD rally based in eastern Ohio. There was a snow storm during much of the rally which ended at about 11:00PM Saturday evening. I was the navigator for Frank Beyer in his Subaru Forester. For this rally, we competed in the Stock Class which meant that we used the odometer that was standard in the car. In order to do the timing calculations, I used my Curta Calculator. We won the Stock Class and tied for first place Overall. This event counted towards the WINTR rally series.

Maple Leaf Winter Rally, Bancroft, Ontario, Canada, February: This was a brisk all- night winter TSD rally through the hilly back roads northern Ontario. I was the navigator for Frank Beyer in his Subaru Forester. This rally had a few more navigational challenges than the other winter rallies and local knowledge of the challenges would have been a definite advantage. We competed in the Intermediate Class and wound-up fifth in class and tenth Overall. This rally counted towards the WINTR rally series.

Winter Challenge Rally, Barre, Vermont, February: This was a brisk all-night winter rally through the hills and valleys of the Green Mountains of Vermont. I was the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220A Cabriolet. We had some difficulties with the reliability of our odometer set-up and eventually it quit altogether. This rally was all on tarmac roads and used a “Monte Carlo” timing system. The rally instructions were all in German. There were several short stages with times that were difficult to achieve. Despite our problems we finished mid-pack and we were pleased with the result given that it was my first German rally.

Big Lap Rally, Loudon, New Hampshire, June: This event was a combination tarmac and gravel TSD rally around the lake area of New Hampshire. I was navigating for Hal Denham in his Audi TT. We competed in the Stock Class using the standard odometer in the Audi TT. We won the Stock Class.

Mass Challenge Rally, Auburn, Massachusetts, July: This was a new event for the New England area and I was the co-rallymaster along with Hal Denham. We put a lot of work into setting up this new rally and in the end is was quite successful. We will put this event on again next year and build it into a major TSD rally in the New England area.

Targa Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Canada, September: This is a major 5-day long rally which covers about 2,000 kilometres throughout eastern Newfoundland. I competed as the navigator for Rick MacLeod in his 2008 Porsche Cayenne in the Grand Touring Class Equipped. We only took a penalty on one stage, but that was enough to put us in 3rd place in our class. We were also on the winning Kenzie Cup Porsche Team which was the overall winning marquee at this event. This was the sixth time that I have been the co-driver/navigator for Rick MacLeod in this event.

Johnny Appleseed Rally, Ohio, October: This was a time-speed-distance rally that was hosted by the Northeast Ohio Region of the SCCA. I was the navigator for Frank Beyer in his Subaru Forester. Baden Classic Rally, Baden-Baden, Germany, April: I was the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in the classic car rally through the Black Forest area of Germany. Harald’s car was a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet. The rally uses “Monte Carlo” type timing and the time at the controls is measured to the tenth of a second. I used a Timewise 797A rally computer in this rally. We finished third in class.

Big Lap Rally, New Hampshire, June: For a second time I navigated for Gary Hamilton in the Stock Class in this Time-Speed-Distance rally in the lake district of New Hampshire. We finished 5th in the Stock Class.

Rally Against Leukemia, Loudon, New Hampshire, August: This is an evening charity time-speed-distance rally that starts and finishes as the New Hampshire International Speedway. I was not able to take part in this rally due to an earlier eye injury, however I did volunteer to the work on one of the timing crews. I worked at two time controls.

Pumpkin Run, Millsboro, Delaware, October: This is a three-day Time-Speed rally put on by the Northeast Rally Club. Competitors are not allowed to use an odometer of

24 any type. This rally is very similar to the Great Race, only shorter. The initial plan was for me to b the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his 1968 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3, but during the preparation of the Performance Chart the day before the rally, the car developed a leaking water pump. As a result we used my Mercedes-Benz 230SLK with Harald driving and I navigating. We won the SOP (Seat Of The Pants) Class in the practice rally on Friday and we also won the SOP Class in the main 2-day Pumpkin Run rally. We scored two Aces despite competing in the SOP Class in which the standard car speedometer must be used. We were the only SOP car to win an Ace!

2015

19 Capitales Historico, Uruguay, March:

I provided some equipment and strategic advice to Paulo Ceretta as he prepared for the 19 Capitales Historico rally in Uruguay. This is a five-day rally throughout Uruguay with very precise timing. Paulo and his team did well winning a trophy for the first time in this event with their third place finish in class.

Frost Heaves, New Hampshire, March:

This was a Time-Speed-Distance rally in the early spring with variable road conditions ranging from frozen to mud. I was the navigator for Gary Hamilton in his Toyota Land Cruiser in the Stock Class. We finished mid-field in our class, mostly as a result of a few surprisingly bad scores. Subsequent investigation revealed that the calculator program that we were using had an application flaw that would result in incorrect answers under some circumstances. This was primarily the cause of the bad scores.

Baden Classic, Michelbach, Germany, April:

This is a two-day classic rally in Germany that is part of the ADAC Oldtimer series. The timing method is mostly the “Monte Carlo” timing method with a few special tests. The rally is located in the Black Forest area of Germany. I was the navigator for Harald von Langsdorff in his 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet. We finished a very close 4th in our class and we were part of the three-car team that won the Overall team prize.

Commitments For 2015
