The Amsterdam drew a field of six – five accomplished sophomore sprint- ers, and one potential Kentucky Derby favorite. Quality Road never started in the Derby, due to quarter cracks, and in June, Evans moved the son of Elusive Quality from Jimmy Jerkens’ care to Pletcher’s. The new trainer put “the best blacksmith in the world,” Ray Amato, in charge of Quality Road’s feet and mapped a course for Saratoga. The 9-furlong Jim Dandy was the first goal, but the Travers is the ultimate goal and Pletcher audibled. “I wanted a race like this, that wasn’t the mile-and-an-eighth, that might not be so grueling and hard on him,” Pletch- er said. “His feet are in great shape and with time I felt better about running here instead of the Jim Dandy.” Andre Pater (Polish-American, Born 1953) ‘Pater Stables’, More than four months since his last Pastel, 25” x 19” start, a win in the Florida Derby, Qual- ity Road went sprinting and had no troubles other than the slightest of bob- bles at the start. We wanted to try to give him a nice race without beating him up, you know? It worked out good.” As Quality Road ranged to the lead- ers at the top of the stretch, Velazquez took a look to his left. He saw Capt. Candyman Can but had first run. Two more looks in the stretch salted away the win – and any doubts about Quality Road’s ability to sprint. “He can do anything, especially if he gets that kind of trip,” Pletcher said. “I wanted to see him have that stalking trip and then run through the stretch the way he did. Any time I see Johnny look around that many times, I’m pretty confident.” Now comes the next challenge. 38 Wednesday, August 5, 2009 Turf Works, Turf Tales The Chief, Allen Jerkens, parks his golf cart outside Barclay Tagg’s barn. The CUP OF COFFEE trainers swap stories and opinions. Tagg departs for the turf. Jerkens drives back to his barn, he doesn’t breeze on the grass. “Years ago, all of them used to say, By ‘They either like the turf or they don’t.’ I Sean Clancy 2007 NY-Bred Saratoga Yearling Grad never breezed horses on the turf,” Jerkens says. “But, now, I don’t know. You look Don’t Forget Gil at the guys who win the turf races, they 2009 G3 Florida Oaks breeze a lot over it.” UPDATE! 7/25/09 G1 CCA Oaks (2nd) Turf works. Dogs are up. Sun’s out. Horses are in full speed. The crowd lines the outside rail of the Oklahoma track; binoculars, stopwatch- es, notepads. Horses bustle on and off the turf. Controlled chaos. Trainers look for their horses, jockeys and exercise riders try to keep them between the rails, owners try to stay informed but out of the way, clockers scan the horizon for the next horse picking up it up along the pine-tree backdrop. Postponed a day, the turf offers the perfect amount of give after weekend rain – 75 horses breeze, 3 furlongs to 7 furlongs, 36.21 to 1:31.84. Angel Cordero and John Velazquez jog a set of Todd Pletcher’s horses back to the wire. Cordero’s horse bucks, the Hall of Fame jockey rides it out like he’s Billy Mays advertising duct tape. Physically, he’s unflappable. Mentally . . . “Johnny,” Cordero yells to his workmate. “Vamos.” Better to get it over with; the duo turns and gallops off, four poles from their F irst and breeze. Tiffany Mueller sits high in the saddle, breezing a long-striding bay for John Ter- ranova. Get its name, that’s a winner. Walter Blum breezes one for Ken McPeek and shrieks at the wire. He thinks it’s a winner. Communique, Grand Couturier, Diamondrella float. Trippo shoots a bullet. Dynaski gallops past for Tom Voss. Sheppard breezes two. Headband Lisa jogs foremosT a free-moving chestnut the wrong way. Edgar Prado guides one for Pletcher. Henrietta Alexander focuses a long zoom lens on the wire. Christophe Clement heads back to the barn, kids in tow. Tagg’s horses work and go home. Matt Muzikar and Tagg play their roles: agent Buying and selling horses. and trainer. Muzikar holds a stack of stakes nominations and is negotiating a ride. Tagg doesn’t make anything easy, “Is that the only ride you have all day?” he asks Muzikar. He actually likes him. It begins and ends with F-T. They settle the call for the race.

Story Time Years ago, Tagg’s stabled on the main track side, just on the other side of the Clare Court training track from The Chief. NY Bred Preferred Yearlings It’s evening, after feeding, races are over. Tagg strolled over to Jerkens’ barn. There was the Chief, no shirt, shorts, pad- dock boots, drinking a beer. All his help lounging around the shedrow, beers in August 15-16 7 pm hand, like a campground cookout. Tagg walked into the fire pit. “How’d you run today, Chief?” Tagg asked innocently. He heard the groan, not from the Chief, but his help’s collective did-you-really- ask-that? The Chief exploded. “Why do they go a half-mile and stop? Why? Just answer me why they go a half- mile and stop?” Jerkens bellowed. “I don’t understand it. You train them, you get them fit and they go a half-mile and stop. Why do they do that?” Tagg looked around, there wasn’t a person left in the shedrow. Jerkens and him, that’s it. Tagg couldn’t answer him. It was a long walk back to his barn.

• • • Years and years ago, Tagg asked Frank Whiteley about riding Jacinto Vasquez. The Hall of Fame trainer said he liked Vasquez’s agent, Fats Weissman. One day, Whiteley was hosing a horse out front of his barn at Belmont Park. “Hey, Fats, hold this horse for a second,” Whiteley asked. For 111 years an all-time great place “Sure thing, Frank,” Weissman took the shank. to buy all-time great racehorses A few minutes later, Whiteley rode out on his pony to accompany a set to the track. Weissman’s still holding that horse.

• • • Years ago, Muzikar saw the Chief on the backside. “Good morning, Chief,” the agent said to the trainer. “Good morning? What’s so damn good about it?” Jerkens muttered. “What’s so good about it. Tell me what’s so damn good about this morning? Just tell me that.” Saratoga Springs August 15-16, 2009, 7 pm Muzikar has said “Morning” to him ever since. 859-255-1555 www.fasigtipton.com
