MEDIA GUIDE Women’s EHF Champions League 2016/17 Foreword Foreword Dear handball friends, Welcome to the new season of the Women’s EHF Champions League. Over last five months, we all have been waiting with enthusiasm for the return of the European top flight and now the time has come to collect the reward for our patience. From 14 October to 20 November 2016, the six rounds of group matches will play out in venues across Europe. I take this opportunity to welcome 16 teams from 11 countries to the second phase of the competition and to congratulate them for having successfully earned their place in the 24th season of this elite women’s handball club competition. This season is going to be special in various perspectives. For the first time the new seeding system has been used giving a direct group stage passage to the run- ners-up of the strongest countries, which will have a positive impact on the overall quality of the competition. For the first time in history we start without the record winners Hypo Niederösterreich, who failed to make it from the qualification tour- naments. The same holds true for former champions Podravka Vegeta and it shows that even the most heralded teams cannot take their tickets in the group matches for granted as new powers are emerging on the continent. No doubt, the season will be very special for the three newcomers as well as Nor- way’s Glassverket, Russia’s Astrakhanochka and Denmark’s Team Esbjerg take their first steps and tough lessons among Europe’s heavyweights. Also for me personally, this season will be special as my time as the EHF President comes to an end this November. Back in 2012, together with the then-newly elected executive committee, we set the development of the women’s handball as one of our main priorities for the upcoming period and it is with a lot of satisfac- tion and pride we can now look back on the positive progress the Women’s EHF Champions League has made over these past four years. The changed format with added quarter-finals and the final tournament not only helped the competition to become more attractive for TV partners but the Women’s EHF FINAL4 has also grown into a pinnacle event of the club season and has become a worthy female alternative to the VELUX EHF FINAL4. The season will be long and a few defeats or lost points at the beginning of the campaign can mean nothing. Just remember how perfectly CSM Bucuresti timed their peak form for the end of the last season. Despite fighting against all odds, they first eliminated the previously unbeaten Russian powerhouse Rostov-Don in the quarter-finals and completed their successful fairy tale at the Women’s EHF FINAL4 in Budapest, stunning Vardar in the semi-final and Györ in the final. The stellar performance of Isabelle Gullden and that trophy-winning shot from Aurelia Bradeanu in the shootout will remain deep in memory and hearts of all handball fans and I am truly convinced that we are going to witness a similar spectacular story this time around. I wish all teams the very best of luck on their journey and wish you, the fans, yet another unforgettable season!.
