The Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities was assigned a light aqua blue as its ‘official’ institute colour. To achieve the correct hues, please make use of the following colour codes and ask print shop staff to take them into account for colour calibration and choose preferably uncoated/matte (not glossy) paper. 6 ÖAW-ACDH – CORPORATE DESIGN GUIDELINES STAND 3/2018 CORPORATE DESIGN BASICS ÖAW-ACDH LOGOS

The Academy logo is based on a typographic rendering of the acronym ÖAW, combined with its full name “Austrian Academy of Sciences” (or “Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften” in German) and two bars.

ALIGNMENT IN A GRID

Depending on the layout, the height of the ÖAW logo is defined as three, two, or one and a half grid squares. When the ÖAW logo is paired with the ACDH logo, the ACDH logo is sized to align with the inner edges of the ÖAW logo's blue bars.

In print or digital layouts, the ACDH logo is placed on the right hand side of the ÖAW logo in align- ment with the inner edges of the ÖAW bars (ACDH project posters and classic ACDH slideshows) or diagonally across from the ÖAW logo in the right bottom corner (ACDH event posters and mod- ern ACDH slideshows).

Example 1: ÖAW logo in English

Example 2: ÖAW logo in German

7 ÖAW-ACDH – CORPORATE DESIGN GUIDELINES STAND 3/2018 CORPORATE DESIGN BASICS ÖAW + ACDH LOGO – COLOUR

The original style of the ÖAW logo has two colours: black and blue. In this version, it is normally used on a white backdrop. The ACDH logo is in greyscale (80% black = anthracite, HTML #58595b). A greyscale version of the ÖAW logo should NOT be used.

ÖAW+ACDH LOGO – B/W

In cases where colour printing is not possible or not desired, monochrome versions of the logos can be used. The standard in this case is 100% black for both logos. Against dark backgrounds, both logos are to be used in their transparent monochrome white version, against bright backgrounds, in their transparent monochrome black version. A greyscale version of the ÖAW logo should NOT be used.

PLEASE AVOID!

Both logos should always be aligned horizontally and may not be rotated or distorted by altering proportions. Additional graphic effects like drop shadows etc. are to be avoided. Any outdated versions of the logo should be replaced in a timely fashion.

PLEASE AVOID:

8 ÖAW-ACDH – CORPORATE DESIGN GUIDELINES STAND 3/2018 CORPORATE DESIGN BASICS USE OF THE COLOUR BAR

The horizontal ACDH bar should only be used in combination with the ÖAW logo (English or German) on the left hand side and with the ACDH logo on the right hand side. If the institute name appears in the bar, the short form of the ACDH logo is to be used. If the full version of the ACDH logo is used, the additional naming of the insitute in the bar is not required.

ÖAW logo + bar without institute name + ACDH logo (full version)

ACDH – AUSTRIAN CENTRE FOR DIGITAL HUMANITIES

ÖAW logo + bar with institute name + ACDH logo (short version)

ÖAW logo + bar without institute name + ACDH logo (short version) – too little information!

ÖAW logo + bar with institute name + ACDH logo (full version) – unnecessary redundancy!

ÖAW logo (short version) + bar without institute name + ACDH logo (full version) – Please avoid using the short version of the ÖAW logo in these cases!

9 ÖAW-ACDH – CORPORATE DESIGN GUIDELINES STAND 3/2018 CORPORATE DESIGN BASICS ÖAW-ACDH TYPOGRAPHY

Typography is an essential component of the public face of the ÖAW and our institute. The ÖAW’s corporate fonts are “Brandon Grotesque” and “”, and are to be used for all typesetting asso- ciated with the ÖAW.

ÖAW-ACDH CORPORATE

BRANDON GROTESQUE ... is a sans- font family with six different styles Thin( , Light, Regular, Medium, Bold und Black) and the corresponding italics (Italic). Brandon Grotesque is suited both for digital use and for print and supports 109 languages. In the ÖAW’s communication material, the font is used in corporate print- ed matter and in headings. It is usually set in uppercase letters.

The font is a protected typeface and may thus NOT be used for content that is made available under an open license. While we use this font for official print material such as event posters, we do not recommend using Brandon Grotesque for the creation of research content such as ppt-slides or scientific posters, as the use of this font will disable attribution of an open license. Instead, we recommend:

Trebuchet MS Trebuchet MS can be used as an alternative option for creating content that shall be made available under an open license.

Palatino [Linotype] ... is a French Renaissance Antiqua. The font family includes four styles and the corresponding italics. Palatino is a system font and comes pre-installed on both Windows (Palatino Linotype) and MacOS systems. The font supports 156 languages. As a serif font, it is predominantly used for body text and, for instance, in letters. Palatino Linotype is an openly available font and thus suitable for use in openly licensed content.

WEB TYPOGRAPHY

Lato Sans-Serif [Open Sans] ... is a free sans serif font, and therefore also suited for use in openly licensed content. It is one of the most popular fonts in the Google Font Library. It is particularly well suited for web typography and is the standard font used on the ACDH web- site.
