ECCLESIOLOGY Theology 64840/Spring 2018 Online MA Course

Professor Todd Walatka [email protected]/574-631-6158/125 Malloy Hall

Description This course offers an introduction to ecclesiology with a particular emphasis on the teachings of the . The course centers on a close, careful reading of three of the major constitutions of Vatican II: , , and . These texts will be read in light of a) the earlier theological tradition, b) the event of Vatican II, c) other texts at Vatican II, and d) developments in ecclesiology since Vatican II.

Course Goals: Students will be able to: 1) Engage in systematic reflection on the nature and mission of the Church in light of the Christian tradition and, in particular, Vatican II; 2) Interpret the teachings of the Vatican II in the context of the event of Vatican II, the documents of Vatican II, and the broader theological tradition; 3) Formulate responses to contemporary challenges to the mission of the Church in the world.

Course Requirements This course will run on a 2-day per week schedule (modelled off of David Fagerberg’s earlier online MA courses here at Notre Dame). Students are expected to complete the assigned readings and videos prior to the date listed on the syllabus for each particular topic. The assigned readings on the syllabus are quite extensive on certain days. At times this is simply because there is significant reading for a particular day. More typically, I will shorten and focus the reading with a reading guide. The texts listed below, therefore, are a mixture of required and recommended reading. My goal will be to post reading guides and video for the week by Monday morning.

Quizzes/Reflections [20%] For each day of class you will complete a brief assignment on the “quiz” function on Sakai. The standard assignment will be a series of quiz questions testing your basic knowledge of the course material followed by a reflection question based on the reading for that day (a question given on the reading guide). The reflection question will be graded on the following scale: + (100%): good to excellent, illustrating an engagement with the text and some critical reflection  (80%): poor to satisfactory 0 (0%): not completed at all or undeserving of any credit

Papers [80%] There are four major papers for the course, each worth 20% of the final grade. The standard paper assignment will require an engagement with a particular text from Vatican II in light of the broader course.
