Reflection for October 25, 2020 By: Ron Czarney

“ . . . You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind . . . And you must love your neighbor as yourself.”

What is it with these religious leaders in Jesus’ time? They think they have all the answers on how one is sup- posed to live a holy life, but they ignore the message that Jesus gives on how we will be successful in living a holy life: “Love the Lord your God first, AND then your neighbor second.” In my religious education class of fourth graders, I always use this riddle to see if anyone can figure out what it means. First of all, I ask them how much 3 + 7 equals. Of course everyone shouts out “10!” That’s the correct an- swer for us human beings. But, in God’s Math, the total isn’t 10 — it’s 2! WHAT?! How can 3 + 7 = 2? Well, I’m going to tell you. First of all, we have to know a bit about the Ten Commandments. If you were to look at an original drawing of the tablets, you would see that on one side of the tablets there are three Roman numeral numbers: I, II, and III. And, on the other side of the tablets are the remaining seven Commandments, also in Roman numerals: IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X. (See, you learned something today — Roman numerals from one to ten!) Anyway, let’s read to- day’s gospel to see if we can figure out this riddle:

Gospel, Matthew 22:34-40

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question, Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?' Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second re- sembles it: You must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'

You know how Jesus spoke in parables to kind of confuse people? Well, He did. Now, if you say that you understand all of what Jesus is saying in His parables, you might be lying just a bit. I know I don’t always get the message that Jesus is sharing with us. And neither did the Apostles. When they finally got the courage to ask Jesus why He spoke in parables, Jesus answered, “I speak in parables so that people will see, but not see; hear, but not hear.”

Now I’m really confused. (That’s okay Ron.) Now, if we can understand that Jesus didn’t use parables just to give us some profound spiritual truth, we’re getting closer to solving the riddle above. Jesus used parables as a tool to lead us into a personal relationship with Him. And just like the Apostles asked Him what these parables meant, Jesus is waiting for us to do the same: “My Jesus, what do You mean by this parable?” And Jesus will always respond with, “Ah, I was waiting for you to ask. Let’s talk about it.” He wants sooo much to have a deep, personal relationship with us!

Okay, here’s the answer to the riddle. (Hope you were able to decipher it from the gospel above.) There are three Commandments on the one side of the tablets, and these Commandments deal with loving God. The remaining seven Commandments are on the other side of the tablets, and they deal with loving neighbor. Now, if you read the part of the gospel that I bolded, you’ll solve the riddle. 3 + 7 = 2. Love of God (3 Commandments), + Love of neighbor (7 Commandments), = the 2 greatest Commandments! 3 + 7 = 2. Congratulations! You’ve passed the test. And as the priest says at the end of each Mass, “Let us go forth to love and serve the Lord, AND one another.” AMEN!
