John “Jack” Miller (Graham, 2019) as well as the adapted popular version in Cheer Up (Graham, 2020) to compare this thesis with a modern-day Reformed evangelist, apologete and preacher (see chapter 8). I would especially like to thank my students at China Reformed Theological Seminary, Taipei, Taiwan, for their patience, enthusiastic engagement and their own counselling, research and thesis applications of my ever-refining Westminster Standards’ based model for integrating theology with biblical counselling, proving again the value of the motto, Ecclesia reformata semper reformanda! (the Reformed church should continually be reforming). In the case of the purpose of this thesis, that reformation is a call to Reformed Presbyterians to re-focus on our Westminster Standards and consider how to adapt not only its well-defined, biblically informed content, but also its structural forms, for the challenges of theological formulation and application in our own day. Finally, I would like to thank my wife Barbara for her sacrifices and support to enable my theological research and writing over the past three years in this distance Apologetics PhD program at NorthWest University, South Africa, while carrying on my regular ministry load in seminary teaching, local church preaching and missionary reporting. ABSTRACT Current loci of Reformed systematic theology and applications to pastoral practice are fragmented from each other creating a dualism between faith (what is believed) and life (how we should live) that impacts pastoral practice at all levels. For example, Reformed biblical counsellors’ dual use counselling-apologetic motif for pastoral practice (exposit truth, negate error, capture reinterpreted extra-biblical knowledge) refined by Powlison is highly generalized, ii requiring more explicit integration with the controlling beliefs of Reformed systematic theology, better clarification of derivative epistemic foundations and new formulations of taxonomic specificity to prevent mixing theology and psychology as equals. While the doctrines of Reformed systematic theology are fairly stable, believers do not quickly grasp their inter-relatedness or their practical importance, particularly with reference to God’s attributes. Reformed authors with various practical theology specialties propose myriads of partial frameworks and practical principles based on smaller sets of biblical data that believers can quickly appreciate and apply, but lack vital connectivity with the full scope of Reformed doctrines. The Westminster Standards’ motif of righteousness as defined by the moral law, also called the Decalogue, integrates its systematic theology and pastoral practice. This thesis will adapt that motif to create a memorable summary phrase of the law of Christ (Latin: lex Christi) with 6 engagement verbs that begin with the letter “R”, derived from ways that the Lord’s covenant-relation attributes engage humanity, that can help us build a Grand Unifying Theory (GUT), called the Lex Christi Dominion of the Righteous Lord (lex Christi-DRL6R’s) together with a new definition of practical theology that helps readers see the interrelationships. This adapted Westminster lex Christi model, proposes a decalogical perspective to integrate systematic theology loci, with a particular contribution to reorganizing and renaming God’s attributes that make more obvious God’s parallel reflections in the moral law, then seeing other integrating connections in the doctrine of Scripture, Christ and man. Lex Christi will be used to integrate other systematic theology loci such as creation-fall (Gen. 1-3), consummation (Rev. 21-22), Wisdom literature and apologetics (Acts 17:22-31). Lex Christi- DRL6R’s will be used to integrate pastoral practice for parent training. In relation to extra-biblical knowledge, lex Christi-DRL6R’s will be used as way to engage worldviews, particularly topics related to trauma and the conscience in the psychologies. This adapted motif also challenges believers as well as those who teach biblical truth to all ages and levels of maturity to consider the Westminster Larger Catechism 101-151 as a micro-scalable, supra-pedagogical perspective structured under the rubric of Exodus 20:1-17, giving an example of how to reorganize the truths of Reformed systematic theology and practical principles of pastoral practice under its perspectival rubric. Expanded Third Edition 2002 [Original 1982], Belfast/Greenville: Ambassador Emerald International, 2002, 538 pp., hc. ISBN 1-889893-72-2 This Dictionary of Theological Terms represents a large amount of labour on the part of the author, who is obviously a scholar of no mean ability. Rev. Cairns has pastored for over forty years in Northern Ireland and South Carolina and has lectured in systematic theology in the Theological Hall of the Free Presbyterian Church. The articles are largely, but not entirely, theological and are of unequal lengths. Cairns is thoroughly Calvinistic and gives some very fine entries on the various aspects of Reformed theology. In some ways the volume is as much a handbook on theology as a dictionary of theological terms – 125 Haddington House Journal, 2005 there is an evident intention to instruct and persuade the reader. As such it is a well conceived concept, for many who would never have the opportunity to look into volumes on church history or systematic theology might very well peruse a dictionary, yet it does not have the full scope that one might expect in a dictionary. In addition, the style is lucid and suited to the ordinary reader. Frequently in the course of a discussion one is helpfully referred to other topics for additional information. The entries generally reveal a decisive point of view, even in cases where Reformed people differ. For example, the creationist view on the origin of the soul is thoroughly rejected and the Traducionist espoused as the only tolerable one.

PHOTOGRAPHS.............................................381 PREFACE The Presbyterian Guardian was established by Dr. J. Gresham Machen to serve as the voice of Presbyterian orthodoxy. Conceived in controversy, the first copy issued from the presses on October 7, 1935. Machen spearheaded the publication of the Guardian with the assistance of a group of ministers and laymen in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA). The proximate cause of the Guardian was the disagreement between Machen and Dr. Samuel G. Craig, editor of Christianity Today (1930-1949). The nether cause was Machen's escalating struggle with modernism in the PCUSA. Machen had led in the formation of the Presbyterian Constitutional Covenant Union which was organized June 27, 1935 in Philadelphia. This group was committed to: (1) reform of the PCUSA; or (2) "failing that, to continue the true spiritual succession of that church in a body distinct from the existing organization." Dr. Craig had editorially questioned the wisdom of such a Union in the September 1935 issue of Christianity Today.

    Reflections on Luther (The Last Medieval Protestant) A Critique of our Culture of Pietism In this essay, I first review some of the themes of the J-Curve book related to Luther, then look at how Luther’s theological vision created Pietism, the beating heart of our Protestant churches, and how that is impacting the church today. Luther’s Rediscovery of Faith-Only To fully appreciate Luther’s insights on justification by faith, it’s immensely helpful to link it to Luther’s discover of Total Depravity, not just in Scripture, but in his own experience. When Luther looked inward at his own obedience, he kept finding more and more sin. His Flesh—like ours—was bottomless. Overcome with self-preoccupation, he realized “we are bent in and curved in upon ourselves.”1 If we are frozen in our sin, if our Will is completely captured by our Flesh, then God must act from the outside. If salvation depended on Luther’s doing, then confessing all his sin was critical. Luther describes the angst he experienced: I often repeated my confession and zealously performed my required penance. And yet my conscience would never give me assurance, but I was always doubting and said, “You did not perform that correctly. You were not contrite enough. You left that out of your confession.”2 Luther rediscovered that God accepts us not because we are good (by our love), but because Jesus is good (by our faith). Neither are we justified by a mixture of faith and love. We are justified by faith alone.
