I was happy to find out that I was quite wrong. My rating: 3. Zare Leonis has made the right choice in attending the Academy to find more information about his sister, but it's about to become entangled in the plans of the Rebels squadron, when his former roommate is replaced by Ezra Bridger in disguise. Due to his purported efforts to save the Academy, Leonis is commended by his Imperial superiors including Lieutenant Chiron. Closer to the end of the story, a new student transfers into Zare's unit. In fact, given how terrible some of the Del Rey books have been I'm looking at you Heir to the Jedi , I think it's high time that Star Wars editorial gives Fry a chance to write a novel for the big kids. In the meantime Zare must face down a dangerous foe of his own: Lieutenant Curahee, who seems bent on pushing Zare to his breaking point. The second book in this series really helps connect the events prior to and directly after Ezra's infiltration of the Imperial Academy. Following the rebel attack on the Imperial Academy, Leonis managed to escape suspicion by claiming that he tried to resist the rebel infiltrators. Author Jason Fry is not trying to put his stamp on Star Wars, he is just trying to tell a good story within that world. The people who can use the dark side without being sith lords seem really inappropriately powered. I really enjoyed and appreciated how it all tied together. Try Now. While riding in an AT-DP walker , Leonis and Kell put their plans into action and hijack the walker after stunning the driver and Oleg. But secretly, he is a hidden enemy in the ranks, determined to discover the truth about his missing sister and to bring down the Empire. This was a great little push into the rest of the story. It was significantly better than the first Servants of the Empire book. However, Leonis suspects that the Imperial authorities are covering up the truth behind his sister's disappearance. It has been accepted for inclusion in Electronic Theses and Dissertations by an authorized administrator of Digital Commons @ ACU. ABSTRACT Mythic narratives exert a powerful influence over societies, and few mythic narratives carry as much weight in modern culture as the Star Wars franchise. Disney’s 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm opened the door for new films in the franchise. 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the second of these films, takes place in the fictional hours and minutes leading up to the events portrayed in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Changes to the fundamental myths underpinning the Star Wars narrative and the unique connection between these film have created important implications for the public memory of the original film. I examine these changes using Campbell’s hero’s journey and Lawrence and Jewett’s American monomyth. In this thesis I argue that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was likely conceived as a means of updating the public memory of the original 1977 film.

  • From Sidious to Nixon: the Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam
From Sidious to Nixon: The Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam A Senior Project presented to the Faculty of the History Department California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Liberal Arts By Brennan Simpson March, 2021 © 2021 Brennan Simpson 1 In the case of a film franchise that features twelve movies, five television series, and various other forms of media by the time this paper was written, many people may be surprised to hear that Star Wars was actually inspired by one of the most questionable moments in American history. However, the time period in which Star Wars creator George Lucas first wrote what became this world’s ‘‘first step into a larger world’’ actually greatly reflected what ended up on the big screen. Even though the Star Wars movies take place ‘‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….,’’ it has been publicly stated in interviews that Lucas based both Star Wars media on the Vietnam War and their main villain, Darth Sidious, on former U.S. President Richard Nixon. Though there have been a few scholarly works since the first Star Wars movie was released in theaters in 1977 that have attempted to explore these parallels, none of them has directly explored how Lucas’s long-standing views on the Vietnam War affected certain key moments of the first six Star Wars movies. This thesis explores George Lucas’ antiwar activism before creating Star Wars to demonstrate how remarkably similar the films and related media of this franchise truly are to both various aspects of the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon’s rise to power.

Unbound: A Journal of Digital Scholarship Realizing Resistance: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Star Wars, Episodes VII, VIII & IX Issue 1, No. 1, Fall 2019 FORCED CREATURES Zooësis in Star Wars Rebels and The Last Jedi Spencer D. C. Keralis Keywords: Star Wars Rebels, Porgs, Critical Animal Studies Non-sentient animals have appeared in the Star Wars universe in roles both integral and decorative since A New Hope premiered in 1977. From beasts of burden like the dewbacks and banthas of Tatooine and the Gungans’ kaadu, to monsters like the wampa, rathtar, and dianoga; to the myriad of critters large and small that inhabit interstellar environments, animals are as much a part of the fabric of the Star Wars tapestry as the various non-human sentient species. In some cases, these creatures are mainly exotic window dressing, but in other instances, these animals are used instrumentally to advance larger narratives. To frame my examination of the use of animals in Star Wars, I borrow performance studies scholar Una Chaudhuri’s useful neologism “zooësis.” Coined by Chaudhuri to articulate “the way culture makes art and meaning with the figure and body of the animal,” encompasses the feelings that animals inspire, and so the affect of animals is an important part of understanding the place of the animal in the Star Wars universe (1). Ezra Bridger’s interaction with animals to explore the Force and to aid the Rebellion in Star Wars Rebels offers one example of how animals are instrumentalized, and Ezra’s affective response to “the figure and body” of these creatures – affection, awe, revulsion, or horror – are fairly straightforward.

  • Animating a Resistance to Trump: Some Thoughts on Star Wars Rebels
Animating a Resistance to Trump: Some Thoughts on Star Wars Rebels The Star Wars series is one of the biggest cash cows in human history. The absurdity of its storylines is only matched by the lunacy of its fan subculture. In any objective analysis, it is a children’s cereal box pastiche of kitsch, pedestrian borrowings from Buddhism and the myths of King Arthur combined with an obvious homage to the Golden Age of science fiction pulp serial magazines like Buck Rogers or the Lensman stories by “Doc” E.E. Smith. How can anyone over the age of 5 possibly be drawn into such fare? By now the production history of the series is well known and so often told that recounting it verges on unavoidable and inadvertent plagiarism. What is the point of engaging in such a dalliance? Why care about the August release of the third season of the STAR WARS: REBELS Disney cartoon? If we were in any other socio-political landscape in American history, it would not be worth anyone’s time. But, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 12 months, it is obvious that we are not living in the same world we were in November 2016. We’re living in an America where a game show host is the imperial president, neo-Nazi stormtroopers are policing the streets, and, after a complete collapse of the old republic’s governance, our new hopes can only be derived from the rebellion that resists these developments. In any struggle, a subculture of mythologies is necessary to provide activist movement members with a framework narrative against which they can define their activity.
