Ugandan First Lady Joins African Legislators to Champion Maternal Health

Written by Naftali Mwaura

The Ugandan First Lady, Janet Museveni joined a group of African Legislators in calling for increased attention towards health of women and their children.

Speaking during the African Regional Consultation on Achieving MDG5 held in Kampala this week, the First Lady pledged support towards advancing the maternal and infant health agenda across the Continent.

Museveni noted that maternal mortality is a clear indicator of health systems, it spotlights a country`s economic and social progress. The First Lady decried high maternal deaths in Africa due to early pregnancies, malaria and HIV/Aids alongside harmful cultural practices that deny women access to modern healthcare.

She reiterated that “the plight of African women is quite appalling; countries must declare zero tolerance to maternal deaths.”
