Firstly welcome to the Cobham FC players and officials and of course the three match officials to Redding Way.

Well what a week makes in football. The club unfortunately lost our Reserve Team Manager Paul Dyer this week due to him resigning on Monday. We have filled the post with David Kelly who joins us with a wealth of experience previously with Westfield and recently Sheerwater (yes another one), we wish Dave all the best in his new post and lots of success aswell.

Last week we played Feltham and got a well deserved and welcome three points. We went behind early on and to be honest didn't really get ourselves completely into the game. We changed things around at half time replacing Dean Pitcher with Charlie Postance. The second half we dug in very deep and to be fair I believe deserved the run of the green we got. James Felgate and Sam Dennison worked tirelessly in midfield against a hard working Feltham side who on another could and should of come away with all three points.

We now need to take that effort and commitment forward into this game and hopefully continue the good work we are doing. Finally I would like to say the club is hosting their Race Night tonight so all supporters and players are welcome.

Come On You Knappers!

theknappers MATCH REPORT KNAPHILL 2 Saturday 10th November Feltham 1 Kick Off 3.00pm Redding Way Combined Counties League Division One

Victory is sweet, especially when a team records only their third league win of the season, and their second one in ten league games. That’s what happened to Knaphill with a Phil Ruggles double giving the home side three valuable points at Redding Way on Saturday, to give the team an encouraging boost from the 2-1 win.

It took a while for Knaphill to settle down, in a side that gave home first team debuts to three players in a game of which both sides had numerous opportunities to open up the game. But although the visitors had the better of the first half, Knaphill dug deep and produced and created more in the second period.

As has often happened this season, Knaphill fell behind early in the game when in the ninth minute, the home defence showed some uncertainty in defending, allowing Francis Luke to put Feltham in the lead. Three minutes later, Knaphill responded when Anthony Gray had a goal attempt after twelve minutes pushed away by the keeper for a corner.

Knaphill were a bit shaky with their distribution, something they improved upon in the second half. But despite creating plenty of opportunities, both teams were guilty of not being convincing in the final quarter of the pitch, especially Feltham who could have two or three up by the end of the half. Phil Ruggles went closest for Knaphill when his close range effort was hacked away to deny an equaliser on 28 minutes. Then keeper Bradleigh Porter on loan from Woking making his first appearance for Knaphill denied Feltham in the 36th minute as the visitors finished the half hanging on to their single goal lead.

Knaphill had substitute Charlie Postance on for Dean Pitcher at the start of the second half in which the home side started well and after 52 minutes a perfect flighted corner from James Felgate was met by Ruggles who headed home the equaliser at the near post. Back in the game, and in the 65th minute the goal scorer was after a second, only to see his shot cannon off the post, which was immediately followed up by Gray’s effort which was blocked by the keeper.

In the 80th minute Postance had what seemed the easiest chance of the half, and with a bit more composure should have given Knaphill the lead, but ballooned the shot high over the bar. But after more Knaphill grafting, the winning goal came after 87 minutes when Postance was upended in the 18 yard box, and Phil Ruggles duly despatched the penalty. A 2-1 lead that Knaphill held onto in a tense finish until the final whistle for three welcome and valuable points.

Knaphill: Porter, Green, McShane, Perks, Edwards, Pitcher(Postance 46mins), Felgate, Dennison, Ruggles, Smith(Chimbima 72mins), Gray(Pym 67mins) Sub Not Used: Walters Scorer: Ruggles 52mins, 87mins.

Knaphill have ten points from 14 games, and Cobham have eight points also from 14 games, and having lost 4-0 at home to Eversley last week, dropped to a place below their hosts today.

It was good to see Knaphill gain all three points last weekend against another team not that far from the bottom three, Feltham. But having only won their third league game of the season, the previous two having been registered one away and one at home, the win on Saturday was an encouraging one, and to some degree, relief. Overall it was a grafted, battling performance, although Knaphill did have to suffer going behind to their opponents again when Feltham scored after just nine minutes.

However, with both sides failing to turn creativity into scoring goals, Feltham’s lead was abruptly dented seven minutes into the second half when So, three valuable points on Saturday, and Phil Ruggles equalised for the home side, as the today it would be nice to secure back to team went on to show a determined display. Cobham football club were formed by villagers in 1892 entering a junior league. The home ground was never settled with various fields around the outskirts of the village being used at different times.

During the late 1920's they played in the Kingston and district league winning division 1 in 1928/29 and 1929/30. In the 1930's they gained intermediate status and quickly achieved senior status in 1938 upon election to the Surrey senior league. After interruption by the war, Cobham became league champions in 1948/9 narrowly missing the double by losing in the league cup final.

The club made home at Cobham recreation ground until 1955/6 when it moved to Anvil lane also known as the Leg 'O' Mutton field. The club took its nickname from the word anvil and so became the hammers. Most recently the club were founder members of the combined counties league moving up from the now defunct Surrey senior league. They finished second to Ash Utd in 1998/9.

The pride of place on the clubhouse wall goes to a picture of Reg Madgwick, who served as player, committee member and fund raiser. He requested hid ashes be scattered on the pitch and left all his worldly possessions to the club and this season we have renamed the ground The Reg Madgwick Stadium in his honour.

The clubs floodlights were installed in1997/8 and were christened with a game with a game against Conference side Woking Fc. The hammers most recent silverware was in 2001/2 when they beat Bedfont FC 3-2 in the Combined Counties League Premier Challenge Cup.

Since then the club have had to fight hard to bring the club back into financial stability as they where left in virtual ruin and substantial debt, but now under different leadership and direction Cobham are on a sound foundation.

Theknappers We’ve got youth on our side with Nick Croshaw – Youth Team Secretary

Knaphill’s impressive U18’s side continued their excellent form in the Southern Youth League with a six game unbeaten league and cup run from mid-September to the end of October, only stopped by a last gasp 3-2 defeat by Shalford.

The year started with only three players returning from last year’s campaign with goalkeeper Craig Taylor, left-back Josh Dawber and this season’s captain, Jonny Coats. This meant a very different squad starting their first game in the Southern Youth League in late August at Godalming Town and how pleasing was it to see a fine 2-1 victory for the Knappers with young striker Mekhail McLaughlin getting both goals. This proved to be a false dawn however as trips to Farnham Town and City both ended in heavy defeats 2-4 & 1-4 respectively; the Knaphill goals from Stevie Kemp, Hamid Senousaoui & Jamal Rodney. The only consistency was that Jonny Coats came away with two ‘Man 0f the Match’ awards (given by the opposition) and three bookings. The youngsters needed to take a long look at themselves and look to repair the damage done to both their position in the table and the teams over- all morale before their next game.

That next match saw a long trip down to Cranleigh and a morale boosting 1-1 draw in a very tight game, played at 100mph and in a great spirit. Matt Willard made his debut in goal and helped keep the Knappers in the game whilst Jonny picked up his third MoM in 4 games. The fifth consecutive away game, due to issues with the use of the floodlights at Redding Way, saw a visit to Sandhurst Town and the fastest goals of the season so far as Jamal Rodney nipped in to score after just 21 seconds. A second goal from Jamal and a powerful Jakub Kurdziel header from the big defender saw a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time. However Sandhurst came storming back in the second half and with ten minutes left had the score at 3-2, again a big defensive effort held the home side at bay and the Knappers recorded their second league win of the season.

The latest game was a strong away performance against all the odds at Fleet Spurs where one player failed to arrive, a second Jack Lewis was injured in the warm-up, and with Robert Litchfield stepping into the breach for his first start of the campaign and with only two fit players on the bench it was all hands to the pump. Fleet scored first and it looked as if it could have been a long night. However goals from Conor Davison (2) on his seasonal debut, Charlie Felicien with his first touch after coming on as a sub and a tap-in from Jamal resulting in a 4-2 victory and a return to the top of the table.

Special mention should go to the rest of the squad: Ahmed Abdali who has made the centre back position (in a strong back three) his own; Louis Herbert with great expertise in the midfield holding role, Scott James who has only made two starts so far, but shows promise; Ben Landi who along with Craig and Jonny has made appearances for the senior Knaphill teams. youngsters Nathan Leonard and Harry Rosier who will get further chances to shine; the non-stop motor-mouth that is Kabir Odekunle; Mr ‘Shoot-on-sight’ Turkay Suleyman, Kallum Parker-Andrew who has had little time to shine so far this season and Hamid Senousaoui whose goal against Farnham was one of the few bright spots in a disappointing game.

theknappers The Grant-McLellan Cup 1st round tie against Windsor which was played at Molesey FC’s Walton Road ground last Monday night, ended in a heart rendering 6-5 defeat on penalties after a hard fought 3-3 draw. With Knaphill 3-1 down after 23 minutes it didn’t look good, but a superb team effort turned the tie around with a last gasp (90+2 mins) free-kick from Turkay Suleyman.
