Schedule I am honored to send you a short summary of my trip to China, which took place between 18th October and 5th November. During my trip to the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese authorities showed, through their respect in all domains, the exceptional consideration that they felt they owed to a visitor entrusted by you. As they also wanted to respect the discretion that had been stipulated, each of these concerns was limited by the other, and their combination came across through subtle behavior nuances. Having arrived in Beijing on the evening of 19th October, I was received on the morning of Wednesday 20th by Prime Minister Zhou Enlai. -

A Powerful Political Platform: Françoise Giroud and L'express in a Cold War Climate Imogen Long Abstract Founded in 1953 by J
1 This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced version of an article accepted for publication in French History following peer review. The version of record, Imogen Long; A powerful political platform: Françoise Giroud and L’Express in a Cold War climate, French History, Volume 30, Issue 2, 1 June 2016, Pages 241–258, is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1093/fh/crw001. A powerful political platform: françoise giroud and l’express in a cold war climate Imogen Long Abstract Founded in 1953 by Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber and Françoise Giroud, L’Express was a politically committed outlet predominantly led by Giroud’s strong editorial direction until its rebranding in 1964 along the lines of Time magazine. Its goals were clear: to encourage modernization in French cultural and economic life, to support Pierre Mendès France and to oppose the war in Indochina. This article investigates Giroud’s vision of the press, her politics and her journalistic dialogue with other significant actors at a complex and pivotal juncture in French Cold War history. Giroud opened up the columns of L’Express to a diverse range of leading writers and intellectuals, even to those in disagreement with the publication, as the case study of Jean-Paul Sartre highlighted here shows. In so doing, Giroud’s L’Express constituted a singularly powerful press platform in Cold War France. I 2 For Kristin Ross, the “ideal couple”’ of Giroud and Servan-Schreiber at the helm of L’Express echoed the pairing of Sartre and Beauvoir; 1 yet Giroud and Servan-Schreiber were a duo with a different outlook, focused on economic development and the modernization of French society along American lines. -

Changes and Continuities in the Formation of the 2017 French Government
Fr Polit (2017) 15:340–359 DOI 10.1057/s41253-017-0042-9 ORIGINAL ARTICLE A mould-breaking cabinet? Changes and continuities in the formation of the 2017 French government Cristina Bucur1 Published online: 1 August 2017 Ó Macmillan Publishers Ltd 2017 Abstract Emmanuel Macron’s election as President of the Republic and the for- mation of a government that includes a mix of politicians from parties on the left and right of the political spectrum, as well as a significant share of non-partisan ministers, has been hailed by numerous commentators as an unprecedented overhaul of France’s political life. This article examines how the two cabinets formed under prime minister E´ douard Philippe in the shadow of the 2017 presidential and par- liamentary elections compare to previous governments in the Fifth Republic. The analysis reveals a less than revolutionary break with previous patterns of govern- ment size, channels of ministerial recruitment, portfolio allocation, gender balance, and ethnic diversity. Keywords France Á Cabinet Á Ministers Á Political parties Á Gender Á Ethnic diversity The president and the prime minister appointment The Constitution of the Fifth Republic places the president at the centre of the government formation process. Article 8 grants the head of state unconstrained power to select the prime minister and to appoint all other cabinet members on his or her proposal. Thus, favourable circumstances, such as the support of a majority in parliament, allow the head of state to appoint a loyal and/or at least subordinate prime minister and take control over the government (Elgie 2013: 20). -
La Labellisation Des « Présidentiables » En France : Étude De Cas D'une
Document generated on 09/26/2021 12:19 a.m. Politique et Sociétés La labellisation des « présidentiables » en France Étude de cas d’une légitimation politico-médiatique Valérie Moureaud La construction de la légitimité dans l’espace public Article abstract Volume 27, Number 2, 2008 Regarding French political life, the term “présidentiable” usually refers to a potential presidential candidate with real chances to succeed ; there is no URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/019460ar juridical definition of it. A would-be president is one who is said to be one. The DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/019460ar labelling inevitably involves the media. On the one hand, it is on the media scene that the would-be president assumes the role he covets and receives his See table of contents peers’ acknowledgement ; on the other hand, journalists are not only the mirror of political life, they are also the actors of the labelling and the notion of “présidentiable” is partly constructed by them. Nevertheless, this power is not to be overrated : media recognize more than they create the would-be Publisher(s) presidents ; traditional political resources, such as political parties or Société québécoise de science politique government experience, must not be neglected. France, Israel, and the Jews: the End of an Era? Emmanuel Navon
Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs, 2015 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/23739770.2015.1042277 France, Israel, and the Jews: The End of an Era? Emmanuel Navon Emmanuel Navon is the Chairman of the Political Science and Communication Department at the Jerusalem Orthodox College and a Senior Fellow at the Kohelet Policy Forum (a Jerusalem-based conservative-libertarian think tank). He lectures on Interna- tional Relations at Tel Aviv University and at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya. He is the author of several books including, most recently, The Victory of Zionism. The tragic events that shook France in January 2015 (the mass shooting in Paris of Charlie Hebdo journalists and of shoppers at a kosher supermarket) raised questions about the safety of French Jews and revived the age-old controversy about public statements by Israeli leaders calling upon French Jews to immigrate to Israel. When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Jews are not safe in France and that Israel is their true home, he stirred the ire of French officials. Prime Minister Manuel Valls of France retorted, “Without its Jews, France would no longer be France, and the Republic would be considered a failure.” Was this just another controversy about Israel’s right (or lack thereof) to speak in the name of French Jews, or do the tragic January 2015 events mark the end of an era in the history of French Jews? One cannot address this question without understanding the history of French Jewry and of the relations between France and Israel. Downloaded by [Tel Aviv University] at 05:21 07 July 2015 When, in 1791, the French National Assembly debated the issue of granting citizenship to Jews, Count Stanislas de Clermont-Tonnerre declared that “Jews ought to be denied everything as a nation and be granted everything as individuals; they should constitute neither a political group nor an order; they must be individual citizens.” This famous statement summarizes the traditional attitude of the French Republic toward Jews.
