    Cameron Graves – A.K.A. The Planetary Prince – Brings Thrash-Jazz to the Universe with Seven Album Features Special Guest Kamasi Washington Alongside Guitarist Colin Cook, Bassist Max Gerl, and Drummer Mike Mitchell Pianist, composer and vocalist Cameron Graves calls the music he’s architected for his new Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group release thrash-jazz, though that only begins to tell the story. Yes, upon an initial listen, the juggernaut metal force and hardcore precision of Seven can knock you back. After all, Graves grew up in metal-rich Los Angeles, headbanging to Living Colour as a kid and, after immersing himself in jazz and classical studies for years, reigniting his love for hard rock through records by Pantera, Slipknot and his most profound metal influence, Swedish titans Meshuggah. But listen closer to Seven, Graves’ follow-up to 2017’s Planetary Prince (which Pitchfork called a “rousing debut”). “Los Angeles is a melting pot of everything,” Graves points out. His father, Carl Graves, was a great soul singer, and you can hear his imprint along with the likes of Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, on “Eternal Paradise,” which marks the younger Graves’ vocal debut. Throughout the album, the generation of 1970s jazz-rock fusion pioneers is a source of inspiration. “Our mission is to continue that legacy of advanced music that was started by bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Return to Forever,” Graves says. “That was instilled in us by the masters. Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock—these guys sat with us and told us, ‘Look, man, you’ve got to carry this on.’” The “us” that Graves refers to would include the core quartet on Seven, as well as the West Coast Get Down, the now well-known expansive yet fraternal clique of high school friends who became some of the most influential jazz-rooted musicians to emerge in recent decades: saxophonist Kamasi Washington, who guests on two of Graves’ 11 new tracks; bassists Thundercat and Miles Mosley; drummers Ronald Bruner Jr.

    Father John Misty – “God’s Favorite Customer” The artist behind the ego: Josh Tillman, mostly known by his performance nom de guerre Father John Misty, is a Maryland born indie folk/rock singer; although he began his musical career as a drummer playing for minor indie bands like Saxon Shore while working in a bakery for a day job. He was born in an evangelical household and was very religious during his youth, something he resented his parents for when he grew up. While working as a drummer, he wrote music for himself in his free time. He attended a private Christian college but dropped out as he felt more comfortable in his music career. Through touring, he made connections with other artists and his demos made their way to Damien Jurado, a fellow Sub Pop artist. He would then go on to open for Jurado. In 2006, he had his first studio album released under the moniker J. Tillman. He then went on to produce four more albums (eight in total), with the last one being released in 2010. During his J. Tillman years, a lot of the music he made was very folk and has joked about the music he made being “sad bastard music.” He found very little success doing folk albums. During this time as J. Tillman, he joined the indie band Fleet Foxes as the drummer. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he stated that, “With Fleet Foxes I had to confront a certain sacred cow in my life, which was the idea that if I was in a popular band, if I just get to be a working musician, then that’s going to be the antidote for all the boredom and pain in my life.

If last year’s aptly named Turn Into compilation showcased a fuzz-loving artist in flux—chronicling her mission to master bedroom recording—then the rising Oakland star’s latest, Everybody Works, is the LP equivalent of mission accomplished. Duterte is as DIY as ever—writing, recording, playing, and producing every sound beyond a few backing vocals—but she takes us places we never could have imagined, wedding lo-fi rock to hi-fi home orchestration, and weaving evocative autobiographical poetry into energetic punk, electrified folk, and dreamy alt-funk. And while Duterte’s early stuff found her bucking against life’s lows, Everybody Works is about turning that angst into fuel for forging ahead. “Last time I was angry at the world,” she says. “This is a note to myself: everybody’s trying their best on their own set of problems and goals.
