18 Honorary Degree Recipients

Adrienne Arsht ’63 Doctor of Humane Letters

Adrienne Arsht is a business leader and philanthropist. She is a power broker who has taken a leading role promoting artistic, business and civic growth in the three cities she calls home: New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami, Florida. She is founding chairman of the Adrienne Arsht Center Foundation in Miami. In 2008, her $30 million contribution to Miami’s Performing Arts Center transformed the city. The Center was renamed the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami–Dade County. Her support of the transformation of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ facilities and public spaces was recognized with the dedication of the Adrienne Arsht Stage in Alice Tully Hall.

In Washington, Arsht spearheaded the creation of the Adrienne Arsht Center for Resilience at the Atlantic Council, which has just been renamed the Adrienne Arsht–Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center in recognition of her transformative $25 million gift. She founded the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center in 2013 to focus on the role of South America in the trans-Atlantic community. Arsht is a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where she established the Adrienne Arsht Theater Fund. Arsht is a vice chairman of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and an executive vice chairman of the Atlantic Council. She is a member of the Trustees Council of the National Gallery of Art and a board member of the Blair House Restoration Fund. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is former president of the Vice President’s Residence Foundation. She is Trustee Emerita of the University of Miami. Arsht was awarded the Carnegie Hall 2017 Medal of Excellence. She is the only woman to have received this distinction.

She is also the only woman to join the Five Million Dollar Roundtable of United Way of Miami–Dade. In 2005, Arsht announced a $2 million gift to Goucher College, creating the Roxana Cannon Arsht Center for Ethics and Leadership, in honor of her late mother, a Goucher graduate. Arsht gave $6 million to the University of Miami to support the university-wide Arsht Ethics Initiatives and other programs. Arsht funded a Best Buddies Delaware chapter to specifically serve Hispanics and African Americans with mental disabilities. The Chronicle of Philanthropy ranked Arsht number 39 on its 2008 America’s 50 biggest donors list.

19 Barbara Smith ’69 Doctor of Humane Letters

As an author, activist and scholar, Barbara Smith ’69 has played a groundbreaking role since the 1960s in opening up a national, cultural and political dialogue about the intersections of race, class, sexuality and gender. She was among the first to define an African American women’s literary tradition and to build Black women’s studies and Black feminism in the United States. Her accomplishments include being the driving force behind the development of the Combahee River Collective, a group identified as a class-conscious, sexuality-affirming Black feminist organization.

Smith’s breakthrough 1977 article, “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,” is frequently cited as opening the field of Black women’s literature and the Black lesbian voice. She has edited or co-edited three major collections about Black women, and authored or co-authored three more. Smith co-founded Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, the first U.S. publisher for women of color to reach a wide national audience, and served as the publisher until 1995.

Smith has been featured on PBS and in Essence magazine. She was a fellow at the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College and scholar-in-residence at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Her numerous awards include the African American Policy Forum Harriet Tubman Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lambda Literary Award, a Gustavus Myers Human Rights Book Award, an Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College Achievement Award, and the Mount Holyoke College Alumnae Association Sesquicentennial Award. Smith was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

20 Gary Younge Doctor of Humane Letters

Journalist, author and broadcaster Gary Younge has covered a remarkable range of stories ever since he first started working at The Guardian in 1993. 22 Academic Apparel

The history of academic apparel has its origins in medieval British universities, particularly the University of Oxford, where scholars wore hoods and as their customary daily attire. Because of the close affiliation between the university and the church at that time, academic gowns resembled cassocks and elaborately worked clerical vestments. It is from these medieval garments that American derives.

Today, American academic attire reflects the level of an individual’s degree and the institution granting that degree. Black is the standard color for gowns, and the three levels of degrees are distinguished mainly by sleeve style. The length of the and its velvet border indicates the level of degree attained, the color of its lining identifies the institution conferring the degree, and the color of the velvet trim indicates the field of learning. Some institutions have adopted solid-color gowns that incorporate their college or university colors, such as Harvard’s crimson or Princeton’s orange. The president of Mount Holyoke College wears a custom-made in the College’s colors.

Many countries wear similar gowns. Chinese students might wear a “qipao” or “xue shi fu,” forms of formal attire worn to important events. Vietnamese women graduating from college are likely to wear a white “ao die,” described as a silken over trousers. Japanese women might wear a “hakama,” formal attire that is associated with learnedness. Thai graduates could wear the traditional “suea khrui” ceremonial attire. In Ghana, graduates wear stoles made of kente cloth, a form of striped weaving originating from the Akan people of South Ghana, over their gowns.

23 Alma Mater

Music: Gladys Pratt, Class of 1914 Text: Gertrude Brady Murphy, Class of 1914

O, Mount Holyoke, we pay thee devotion, In the fervor of youth that is strong, The courage of right is thy garland, Our lives, Alma Mater, thy song. So from east and from west now we gather, And united in firm love to thee, All years are as one, and their loyal pledge, Mount Holyoke forever shall be, Mount Holyoke forever shall be.

Through the heart of a new day’s endeavor, Breathes the life of the old days that live, For what thou hast given we honor, But we love thee for what we can give. So when soft in a whisper thou callest, For the treasures unlocked by thy key, Our achievements, our hopes and our glorious faith Shall answer, Mount Holyoke, to thee, Shall answer, Mount Holyoke, to thee.
