Playoff records: Patrick Reed (2-0), Jimmy Walker (0-1). The playoff marked the 14 th at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, and sixth since the event moved to Kapalua in 1999. Prior to Monday, the most recent was won by Jonathan Byrd (over Robert Garrigus) in 2011. The playoff is the third of the 2014-15 Season, with Robert Streb winning the first at the McGladrey Classic and Bubba Watson winning the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. The third-round leader has gone on to win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions 23 of 31 times, the most recent being Steve Stricker in 2012. The third-round leader has won three of the eight PGA TOUR events so far in the 2014-2015 season. Patrick Reed Patrick Reed records his fourth PGA TOUR victory in his 72 nd start (2013 Wyndham Championship, 2014 Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, 2014 World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship, 2015 Hyundai Tournament of Champions). Reed collects 500 FedExCup points and moves from No. 86 to No. 6 in the rankings, with 591 points. Reed’s victory comes at the age of 24 years, 5 months and 7 days. He joins Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia as the only players in the last 20 years to record 4-plus wins before the age of 24 years and six months. Reed, with four wins, owns the most wins by current players on the PGA TOUR under the age of 25. Player ages when they won for the fourth time in the last 20 years: Tiger Woods – 21 years, 3 months, 15 days (1997 Masters) Rory McIlroy – 23 years, 3 months, 9 days (2012 PGA Championship) Sergio Garcia – 24 years, 5 months, 5 days (2004 Buick Classic) Patrick Reed – 24 years, 5 months, 7 days (2015 Hyundai Tournament of Champions) (Note: Phil Mickelson won his fourth event 21 years ago at the 1993 Hyundai Tournament of Champions at the age of 23 years, 6 months and 24 days). Reed wins in his second appearance at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. He finished T14 in 2014. This marks the first come-from-behind win for Reed. He held or shared the lead heading into the final round in his previous three victories. Reed finished with just three bogeys this week (No. 17/R4, No. 7/R2, No. 8/R2). After holding a three-stroke lead at one point on the back nine, Walker was unable to make birdies on the final eight holes, with a bogey on the par-4 14 th and pars on the other seven holes. Walker was seeking his fourth PGA TOUR event in his 218 start (2013 Frys.com Open, 2014 Sony Open in Hawaii, 2014 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am). Walker finishes runner-up in his second start at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, finishing T21 last year with rounds of 73-73-67-72. Walker was trying to become the fifth player to win both the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and the Sony Open in Hawaii while both events are being contested in Hawaii. Last year, Zach Johnson became the fourth player to win each of the PGA TOUR’s Hawaii events Jim Furyk (1996 Sony; 2001 Tournament of Champions), Ernie Els (2003-04 Sony; 2003 Tournament of Champions), Vijay Singh (2005 Sony; 2007 Tournament of Champions), Johnson (2009 Sony, 2014 Tournament of Champions). Five other players won the Sony Open and the Tournament of Champions when it was played in California -- Jack Nicklaus (1974 Sony; 1963-64, 1971, 1973, 1977 Tournament of Champions); Lee Trevino (1968 Sony; 1981 TOC); Lanny Wadkins (1988, 1991 Sony Open, 1982-83 TOC); Paul Azinger (1991 Sony; 1990 TOC) and Mark O’Meara (1985 Sony; 1996 TOC). Last season, Walker enjoyed his best season on TOUR, finishing No. 7 in the FedExCup standings, with wins at the Frys.com Open, Sony Open in Hawaii and AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. This week marked the second time in Walker’s career that he has led or shared a lead through 54 holes. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am after his only other third-round lead. Walker had just two bogeys this week coming on the 17 th hole during the second round and the 14 th hole Monday. Hideki Matsuyama Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (T3) in the field thanks to his victory at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance, followed a third-round 7-under-66 (his second consecutive 66) with a final-round 70 to finish T3. He missed a 6’10” birdie putt on the 72 nd hole that would have placed him in the Reed-Walker playoff. This week marked the second time that the 22 year-old has led or shared the lead through 54 holes of a PGA TOUR event. He finished T10 at the 2014 Crowne Plaza Invitational last year in the only other occasion. This week marked Matsuyama’s first trip to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. He was seeking to become the first player to win this event in their first appearance since Daniel Chopra in 2008. With his win at the Memorial last year, Matsuyama became the fourth Japanese-born player to win on the PGA TOUR, joining Ryuji Imada (2008 AT&T Classic), Shigeki Maruyama (2001 Greater Milwaukee Open, 2002 HP Byron Nelson Championship, 2003 Wyndham Championship) and Isao Aoki (1983 Sony Open in Hawaii). Jason Day and Chris Kirk The round of the week was turned in Monday by Jason Day and Chris Kirk, with matching 11-under 62s equaling the course record at the Plantation Course. Graeme McDowell posted the same score in the final round in 2011, while K.J. Choi carded a 62 in the third round in 2003. Day finished T3, while Kirk finished T14. Day’s 62 (which comes in his first start of the 2014-15 Season) is a new-personal best on TOUR. He owns two 63s, most recently during the first round of the 2011 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. Kirk’s 62 equaled his career-best round on TOUR, set during the second round of the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii. Day and Kirk’s 62 equaled the low round on TOUR this season, joining Jimmy Walker (9-under 62/R3/Shriners Hospitals for Children Open), Jim Herman (9-under 62/R3/Shriners Hospitals for Children Open), Ben Martin (9- under 62/R3/Shriners Hospitals for Children Open). Additional Player Notes Russell Henley, winner of the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii, finished T3 in his second start at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. A year ago, he carded rounds of 72-72-70-75 to finish 27 th . Sang-Moon Bae finished the 2013-2014 season ranked No. 122 in the FedExCup standings without recording a single top-10 finish in 24 starts. He now has three top-10 finishes in just four events (1 st - Frys.com Open, T5 – CIMB Classic, 6 th – Hyundai Tournament of Champions) so far in the 2014-2015 Season.
