It is a classifcation of a broad range of harmonizing, country- tinged Christian music that originated in the southeastern part of the United States. Some Southern gospel is lovely and spiritual and seeks not to entertain the fesh but to edify the spirit. (Tere are also quartets that are not Southern gospel in style; an example is the Old Fashioned Revival Hour Quartet that was featured on Charles Fuller’s radio program.) We praise the Lord for all Christian music, Southern or otherwise, which doesn’t sound like the world, which has scriptural lyrics, which seeks solely to glorify Jesus Christ and edify the saints, and which is produced by faithful Christians.

Mark Duffett Media and Cultural Studies, University of Chester, Warrington WA2 0DB, UK; E-Mail: [email protected] Academic Editor: Edward Foley Received: 5 January 2015 / Accepted: 15 February 2015 / Published: 9 March 2015 Abstract: Do fans sanctify their heroes? In the past, I have argued that Elvis fandom is not a neo-religious practice but that attention to a modified version of Durkheim’s theory of religion can, nevertheless, help to explain it as a form of social interaction. I take that argument further here, first by revealing the ethical and analytical advantages of neo-Durkheimian theory, then by pitting this theory against three aspects of Elvis’ sincere engagement with gospel music. Elvis Presley won three Grammy awards for his gospel albums and was the musician who did most to bring the gospel quartet tradition to the mainstream. His eclectic personal ties to spirituality and religion have become a focus of debate within his fan culture. They offer a set of discursive resources through which to explain the emotional impact and social influence of his music. If star musicians are positioned as centres of attention, what happens when they use their privileged position in the spotlight to offer a “spiritual” message? Keywords: Elvis; gospel music; fandom; Durkheim; spirituality; totemism I can understand that people have spiritual leanings and want to find a way to God. But there is only one way to God.

An expanded version of an article originally published in Elvis Unlimited magazine: Las Vegas, Nevada, December 7th, 1976: After performing the “Hawaiian Wedding Song” Elvis tells the audience, “there’s something that I wanna do before I leave here, because we’ve never done this before…if you don’t mind, I know you’ve been sitting here for a long time, (but) I’d like to do a couple or three spiritual songs for you”. Elvis is planning an impromptu gospel medley of “You Better Run” and “Bosom Of Abraham”, and will sing the bass parts, whilst Charlie Hodge takes over lead vocal duties. Before he starts singing a member of the audi- ence calls out “you’re the king!” to which Elvis re- plies, “thank you sir, I’m fixing to sing about him”. This moment really sums up Elvis’ love of gospel music, and his attitude towards his own faith, and as it was recorded during one of the shows from his final Las Vegas season, it also provides a timely reminder that gospel music was an impor- tant influence on both Elvis’ music, and his stage performances, from his first recordings right up until his last. The Presley family moved to Memphis in 1948, and Elvis would attend the First Assembly of God Church with his mother Gladys. Gospel music was undoubtedly his first love, and both the singing and physical performance styles of gospel quartets such as The Blackwood Brothers and The Statesman Quartet were a huge influence on the young Elvis. James Blackwood re- called, “The story got out that he auditioned for The Blackwood Brothers and we told him he couldn’t sing, but this is entirely untrue.

From all I’ve been able to gather, it’s the only book of its kind that collects historical Southern Gospel data and categorizes it alphabetically. This book is not meant to be a balanced look at the genre, however. I intentionally included some obscure entries for trivia buffs such as the Brown’s Berry Four and a little known movie titled Sing A Song For Heaven’s Sake . Popular groups haven’t necessarily been treated equally either. For example, the Statesmen Quartet entry is much longer than the Stamps Quartet or the Blackwood Brothers entries. Some critics will likely say these entries should be equal in scope, but the point of this encyclopedia is not to proportionately represent groups based on their popularity. The point of this work is to pass on to readers the results of my historical research.

Email: [email protected] Editorial Dear Gospel Fan, We are sorry to hear of the death of Ed Bonja who passed away on 4th September after a short illness in a clinic in Berlin. He was Elvis’ official photographer and visited many Elvis events telling of his time “shooting” Elvis and of course selling his photos, one of which we bought when he came to Bridlington. As mentioned in the last newsletter, we did attend the Thank You Very Much dance event in Manchester (see report in this issue) at which the audience could either sit in “regular” rows of seats, or more informally at tables. We sat at a table with a reporter from a newspaper who had come to write a review of the show and a couple who had come from Holland. We were pleased to attend two local events: Memphis by the Moors in Scarborough and Welcome to Elvis in Bridlington where we had our Elvis Gospel display boards and in Scarborough were able to give a short presentation of “Elvis Gospel “ to the audience, which is always well received. Thanks to generous financial donations, we have been able to update our website: www.elvisgospel.com, in such a way that I can now get into it to make any changes and regularly update.

“Crossing Chilly Jordan”—The Blackwood Brothers (1960) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Tom Graves (guest post)* The Blackwood Brothers The Third Rail of Rock-and-Roll: Paying Respect to the Greatest of Gospel Groups, the Blackwood Brothers Quartet Almost exactly one week before Elvis Presley struck a chord heard 'round the world at Sun Studio in July of 1954, he heard news on the radio so devastating that he spent half an hour in Gaston Park in Memphis crying bitter tears over the tragedy. Two members of the most famous gospel group in history, the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, had died in front of hundreds of gasping spectators at a county fair in Clanton, Alabama. The 10-seater Beechcraft airplane the Blackwoods used to fly to their appearances crashed and exploded during a practice take-off and landing. Two group members were on the ground watching in horror with the rest of the crowd as the plane stalled and fell nose down, piloted by R.W. Blackwood and bass singer Bill Lyles. There is some debate over which gospel group Elvis most favored, the Blackwoods or the Statesmen Quartet. What there should be no debate about is that Southern gospel music was the music Elvis most loved and was most influenced by. There were many days in Elvis' life when he did not listen to one note of rock-and-roll, blues, country, or soul. But there were very few in which he did not hear music by one of the many gospel groups he adored. James Blackwood once told a reporter that the last album Elvis listened to was by the Stamps Quartet.
