The North York Astronomical Association invites all astronomers to attend its fourth annual observing convention. The weekend includes observing sessions (including an organized Comet Halley Watch and a Perseid Meteor Shower Patrol), formal and informal slide presentations, workshops, and a Twilight Talk. Observers are invited to bring their slides and telescopes and share their observing experiences.

9:00 OBSERVING SESSION - Halley Comet Watch - Perseid Patrol MEET OUR SPEAKERS Tom Bolton (Origin of Comets), a Professor of at and the Associate Director or is the discoverer of Cygnus X-1, the first . He will detail the three contending theories of comet origin relflç them to known comet properties and describe how the coining Halley ipparition might help to choose between them. Dave Dobrzelewski (The Stellar Connection) a Research Technician with Eastman Kodak in Rochester, has observed over 300 doubles, first with the the Michigan State 24" reflector and then as Observatory Chairman of the Warren (Ohio Astronomical Society. His talk on double star observing strqsses the importance of developing a personal observing regimen, with suggestions as to how to do so. Barry Sherman (Photographing Halley's Comet/Telescope Workshop) is a deep sky observer and an award winning and much published astrophotographer He will explain how various telescopes and, filters can be used to catch The Comet qnd what results might be obtained with different exposures, emphasizing the results that can be obtained from Canada and the northern U.S. Bill Katz (Discovering tbe Ogre) is a veteran meteor observer who has logged over 13,000 meteors in the last 4 years. He also enjoys solar and aurora photography Bill recounts the persgnal adventure of the NYAA discovery of A new type of variable star and the latest research on it by the NYAA and professionals. Kai Millyard (An Amateur in Chile) has worked professionally for the university of Toronto at David Dunlap Observatory and in Chile. A veteran observer of planetaries, deep sky objects and, meteors and co-discoverer of the Ogre, Kai has had the rare opportunity to enjoy Chile's deepest skies and use some of the largest professional instruments. His talk recounts his several Andes expeditions, highlighted by stunning slides of the rugged region and the southern skies. Greg Beach and John Hlynialuk (Computer Workshop). Greg is writing a vast conputer program that will aid construction of telescope, from optics to mounting. He is an astronomy popularizer active with the Sudbury Astronomy Club, science North and Laurentian University He will be demonstrating the ins and outs of the astronomy database available on Compuserve. John teaches Computer science, Physics and Math and is also a recreational programmer who has devised his owh astronomy program. He will demonstrate various astronomical programs and discuss astronomical computing in general. Clive Gibbons (Telescope Workshop). Clive is an astrophotographer whose articles and photos have appeared in Astronomy. He works at The Scope Shop in Toronto. Clive will show and discuss the pros and cons of various accessories and give tips on how to improve your own system to suit your observing program through modification or addition of equipment. SPECIAL ACTIVITIES Informal Slide Presentations. Participants are invited to present a short talk and slides on their observing activities. Please submit an outline of your planned presentation (of up to 15 minutes) with your registration form. Perseid Meteor Patrol. The best meteor shower of the year peaks Sunday evening at 60 meteors an hour. Each night the NYAA meteor team, Bill Katz Kai Millyard and Bruce Waters, will lead meteor orientation and observing sessions. Note: Participants are invited to stay over Sunday night for the maximum. Halley’s Comet Watch. Steve Dodson will be offering a magnificent early morning view of The comet through his 22 inch Dobsonian telescope. This first opportunity to observe Halley s legacy, while it is only 15th magnitude. Swap Table. Participants will have the opportunity to buy, sell or trade astronomical articles. This table is not for commercial sales and individuals will be responsible for their own property at the table. CONVENTION REGISTRATION

A registration fee of $6.00 is required to cover the expenses of the meeting. You are urged to pre-register by mail before July 29, 1985. Please complete and return the attached registration form, with payment, to the address indicated. After July 29, 1985 and at the gate, the registration fee will be $8.00 per person. Your non-participating guest (spouse or companion) is welcome without charge, but please include his or her name on your registration form. There is no charge for family members under 16 years of age. Your cancelled cheque is your receipt. Please pick up your name tag at the registration desk.

CAMPSITE RESERVATIONS

This is a camping weekend, so bring your tent or trailer. The River Place is a private campground with showers, flush toilets, pool and snack bar. To reserve a campsite, please complete the camping reservation form and mail it along with payment to the address indicated.

MEALS

A buffet dinner will be available on Saturday night. To reserve your dinner please indicate the number required in the registration form and enclose payment. We can not guarantee a dinner unless you reserve one in advance.

Cooking is allowed in the camping area on camp stoves and charcoal grills. Open fires are not permitted. Restaurants are located in Mount Forest, Durham, and, Hanover, within a 1/2 hour drive of the River Place.
