Birth Statistics

The number of registered live births in La Union during the second quarter of 2020 summed up to 2,583, an decrease of 21.63 percent compared with the 3,296 births in the same period of 2019.The daily average birth occurrence during the second quarter of 2020 was computed at 28 births or an average of two babies born per hour. The month of May posted the highest daily average births for second quarter a year ago and second quarter of 2020 this year with 42 and 32 respectively.

Meanwhile, the month of June recorded the least daily average births in the province both in the second quarter of 2019 and 2020 with 31 and 32 births respectively.

Among the city/municipalities in the province, the City of San Fernando registered the highest number of births at 1,337 in second quarter of 2020. Its share was more than half (51.76 percent share) of the total registered births in La Union. ranked second with 537 births (20.79 percent share), distantly followed by with 173 births (6.70 percent share), Naguilian with 171 births (6.62 percent share) and Rosario with 84 births(3.25 percent share).

On the other hand, Luna had the lowest number of registered live births in second quarter of 2020 with 2 (0.08 percent share) followed by Burgos with 4 (0.15 percent share).

Males (1,358) outnumbered females (1,225) in terms of registered live births during the second quarter of 2020 resulting to a sex ratio of 111 males per 100 females.

Seven municipalities posted a sex ratio that were higher than the provincial ratio. The highest sex ratio of 233 was recorded in Santol. This was followed by San Juan with 200 Sex Ratio and Bangar with 175, Sudipen 150, Pugo 140, Rosario 115 and City of San Fernando with 114 Sex Ratio. On the contrary, the lowest Sex Ratio of 67 was recorded in Bagulin.

Marriage Statistics

The number of registered marriages in La Union during the second quarter of 2020 summed up to 155, a decrease of 90.05 percent compared with the 1,558 marriages in the same period of 2019.

Most of the city/municipalities have decrease number of registered marriages from second quarter of 2019 to second quarter of 2020. The biggest percent decrease was noted in Bangar from 80 to 0 marriages (100%) and Burgos from 26 to 0 (100%). This was followed by Bagulin from 42 to 1 marriages (97.62%) and Pugo from 39 to 1 marriages (97.44%).

In second quarter of 2020, the City of San Fernando recorded the most number of registered marriages in the province with 28 marriages comprising 18.06 percent of the total registered marriages in the province. Bauang ranked second with 23 (14.84 percent share) followed by Luna with 14 (9.03 percent share).

A year ago, the lone city also topped the municipalities with 181 marriages which accounted for 11.62 percent of the total. Bauang ranked second with 167 marriages (10.72 percent share) while Agoo ranked third with 151 marriages (9.69 percent share).

On the other hand, the municipalities of Bangar and Burgos posted no registered marriages during the second quarter of 2020.

The daily average marriages occurrence during the second quarter of 2020 was computed at 2 marriages. The months of May and June posted the highest daily average marriages for second quarter a year ago with 21 each while the month of June posted the highest daily average marriages this second quarter of 2020 with 4 marriages.

Death Statistics A total of 1,293 deaths were registered during the second quarter of 2020. The figure indicated a decrease of 9.77 percent death occurrences from the same period of 2019 figure of 1,433.The City of San Fernando ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths during the second quarter of 2020 with a total of 481 or 37.20 percent of the total registered deaths in the province. Agoo placed second with 146 registered deaths (11.29 percent share), followed by Bauang with 83 (6.42 percent share), Naguilian with 65 (5.03 percent share) and Balaoan with 58 (4.49 percent share).

In the same quarter of 2019, the City of San Fernando recorded 699 deaths or 48.78 percent of the total registered deaths in the province. Agoo registered 130 (9.07 percent share), Bauang with 65 (4.54 percent share), Naguilian with 64 (4.47 percent share and Balaoan with 51 (3.56 percent share).

Comparing the two periods, Tubao had the highest percent increase with 50 percent from 22 deaths in 2019 to 33 deaths in 2020. On the contrary, the municipality of Burgos registered the highest percent decrease with 42.86 percent from 7 death occurrences in second quarter of 2019 to 4 death occurrences in second quarter of 2020.

The municipality of Burgos posted the smallest number of registered deaths in second quarter of 2020 with four (0.31 percent share). It was followed by San Gabriel with 13 (1.01 percent share) and Santol with 14 (1.08 percent share).

During the same period of last year, the municipalities of Burgos, Bagulin, and Bagulin had the least number in terms of the number of registered deaths: Burgos with 7 (0.49 percent share), Santol wih 10 (0.70 percent share) and Bagulin with 13 (0.91 percent share),

During the second quarter of 2020, mortality was at its peak in the month of June with total registered deaths of 528. This figure is more than one-third of the provincial quarterly total of 1,293 death occurrences. The number of deaths in the month of June 2020 translates to an average of 18 death occurrences per day. The figure was higher than the 14 daily average death occurrences in the province.

There were more death occurrences among males (717) than females (576) in La Union during the second quarter of 2020. The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 124 which means that 124 males died for every 100 female deaths.

A total of ten city/municipalities posted a sex ratio higher than the provincial sex ratio, the highest of which was recorded in Santol with 367. San Gabriel ranked second with 333 followed by Aringay with 181. The lowest computed sex ratio of 76 was noted in Sudipen.

Explanatory Notes Data on births, deaths and marriages presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Live Birth (Municipal Form 102), Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) and Certificate of Marriage (Municipal Form No. 97) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in La Union and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - La Union Provincial Statistical Office. Information included births, deaths and marriages registered from April to June 2020 and April to June 2019.
