California State University, Fullerton is a broadly based liberal arts institution that also offers many professional studies such as business administration, education, engineering and nursing. Having first offered classes in 1959, the university has grown to 23,000 stu- dents and achieved national distinction. In 1984, the university will host team handball competition at the Summer Olympics. It also will begin its 25th anniversary observance with the theme "Honoring the Past-Creat- ing the Future." The university's students come primarily from Southern California with many from other states and other nations. Most students commute each day to and from classes: many come to classes only in the evening. Drawn from throughout the world, the 750-member faculty is noted for its commitment to effective teaching and schclarly activity. Research is actively pursued, typically with students involved. The university enjoys full accreditation for its overall program. In addition, national recognition has been accorded to programs in art, athletic training, business, chemistry, education, engineering, communications, music, nursing, speech and hearing, and theater. All told there are 82 degree programs-40 of them at the graduate level. Reinforcing classroom instruction is the largest university level internship and coop- erative education program on the West Coast. The program allows students to gain on-the- job experience while continuing their regular studies. Another amenity is the extended education program. It provides classes, workshops, conferences and study tours on a year-round basis. Extended education offerings are open to the community without the formalities of regular admission to the university. Still another strong point is the university's cultural events program. It includes a series that brings nationally known professional artists to the campus for residencies as well as public performances and the Cabaret Repertory Theater Company, which performs regu- larly in Brea. , An extensive recreation program aimed chiefly at students but also open to community members is another highlight, as is the 7,OOO-personnetwork of community support organi- zations. The Titan Athletic Foundation is one of these support groups. Further examples of community outreach are the Fullerton Arboretum and TuckerWild- life Sanctuary. Opened in 1979, the Arboretum is a 25-acre on-campus preserve that was established jointly by the university and the City of Fullerton. Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary is a half-hour from campus in a canyon of the Santa Ana Mountains. To reinforce the university's commitment to high academic standards and community services, Cal State has embarked on an ambitious campaign called "Commitment to Mind- power."lts purpose is to raise the necessary non-state funding to make a very good univer- sity a great university. ADMINISTRATION Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb, President Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb was appointed the third president of Cal State Fullerton on July 8,1981. Her selection was the culmination of a nationwide search begun In November, 1980to replace Dr. L. Dr. Cobb had served as Dean of Douglass College at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, since 1976.There she also held the rank of Professor of Biological Sciences. Prior to her Douglass ap- pointment she was Dean of Connecticut College and Professor of Zoology for seven years. Previously, she was Professor of Biology at Sarah Lawrence College In New York. Born in January, 1924, Dr. Cobb is known for her work in cell physiology, her promotion of the advancement of women in scientific fields and her activities on behalf of minorities. She Is the first black woman to head a major public university on the west coast. 3 Titan Baseball Synonymous with Success At a recent sportswriters luncheon in Anaheim Stadium, visiting Hall of Famer Yogi Berra was asked if he had ever heard of Cal State Fullerton. "Sure," said Yogi quickly. "They have a good baseball program." In many parts of the country, Cal State Fullerton is synonymous with college base- ball. Ten consecutive conference titles, the 1979 national championship and the blos- soming of as a star with the have put Titan baseball on the map. Such accomplishments were far from the mind of Beryl Kempton when he volunteered to grade the first Cal State Fullerton diamond north of the gymnasium back in 1964. What had been a club team began play with a 13-man roster and a history professor as in Warren Beck. Physical education instructor Bill Fulton raised the program to a more competitive level but it was Augie Garrido's arrival in 1973 that set the stage for greatness. After a transitional losing season, Garrido quickly turned the program around with junior college players and won the California Collegiate Athletic Association title in 1974 to advance to the Far West Division II regional. The step up to Division I in 1975 only served to accelerate Fullerton's baseball growth. The Titans won the Pacific Coast Athletic Association crown and upset the reigning dynasty - USC - on its home field in the regionals. A short-lived trip to the College in Omaha only served to whet the appetite for a return visit.

The 1979 national championship team was saluted prior to a game at Dodger Stadium. 4 The string of championships continued with another PCAA title in 1976 and the first of seven consecutive Southern California Baseball Assn. crowns in 1977. This align- ment currently includes Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, Loyola-Marymount, University of and Nevada-Las Vegas and is one of the most powerful conferences in the nation. The Titans the jackpot in 1979, beating UCLA in the regionals and then capturing the NCAA championship with a 2-1 win over Arkansas. They did it the hard way, losing in the first round of both the regional and national tournament, which are elimination affairs. UCLA won the opener of the region- al, 5-4, but Fullerton came back to beat Portland, 20-3; host Fresno State, 12-3; and the Bruins twice by 9-2 and 6-5 scores. At Omaha, after Garrido boldly predicted a Titan championship, Fullerton looked bad after a 6-1 first-round loss to Mississippi State. But the Titans came back again to beat Connecticut, 8-3; Arizona, 16-3; Arkansas, 13-10; and SCBA rival Pepperdine, 8- 5, before winning the title behind Dave Weatherman's four-hitter. Garrido's prediction held true, even though he thought the final game would be another high-scoring battle between the Razorbacks and Titans. The difficulty of winning a national championship was apparent during the next two seasons as Fullerton won two more SCBA crowns but had to take to the road to play in the regionals. In 1980, the host Wildcats at the won their regional and went on to capture the NCAA title. Arizona State used the same formula in 1981, beating the Titans in Tempe and cruising to the crown in Omaha. Fullerton overcame that same hurdle in 1982 but paid a price for their stunning sweep of the Sun Devils in Tempe. Arizona State never had lost a playoff game in Packard Stadium but this time they lost a pair of one- games to the visitors, 10-9 and 8-7. Having eliminated the defending national champions, the Titans then went to Omaha and scored another first - becoming the only team that failed to score a run in two quick defeats. The winning tradition of Titan baseball came in handy last year when upstart UC Santa Barbara appeared to wrest away the SCBA title. The Gauchos swept Fullerton in an early doubleheader and kept on winning to force the Titans into a perfect finish. They responded, winning 12 in a row to forge a co-championship and earn an at-large regional berth back in Tempe. Fresno State avenged numerous setbacks to Fullerton in previous regionals and knocked the Titans out of the tournament. Three Titans have advanced to the major leagues and more are on the way. Pitcher Dan Boone broke in with the Angels and spent time with the . Dan Whitmer played briefly with the Angels and Toronto Blue Jay. Wallach, who was the College Player of the Year in 1979, emerged as a bonafide star in 1982 when he batted .268 with 28 home runs and 97 runs batted in. Career (15 years) 595-278-6 .682 Fullerton State (11 years) 485-202-5 .706 Success and Augie Garrido have gone hand in hand ever since the personable coach came to Fullerton in 1972. The Vallejo, California native has raised the Titan program from ground zero to a perennial national power while serving as one of the most eloquent spokesmen for the rise of collegiate baseball in this country. Garrido, 44, has completed a "Decade of Champions" with his teams winning or sharing 10 consecutive championships in the CCAA, the PCAA and the current SCBA. It's a record parallelled in collegiate sports only by UCLA basketball and midwestern wrestling dynasties. Along with those 10 titles have come three regional crowns, the 1979 NCAA Championship and a pair of national Coach of the Year trophies to accent a winning percentage better than .700. All this at an institution where the team had a losing record for its first eight seasons and a combined winning percentage of only .350. Garrido received his bachelor's degree from Fresno State University in 1961 follow- ing an all-star career with the Bulldogs. He signed with the ' organi- zation and played six years in the Indians' minor league system until retiring in 1966 to accept a coaching position at Sierra High School in Tollhouse, California. Garrido made his debut on the collegiate level with one season at San Francisco State and then turned around a struggling program in three years at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Mustangs' basketball coach at that time was Neale Stoner, who moved to Fullerton as athletic director and brought Garrido with him to launch the university's most consistently successful men's program.

Garrido on the future: "We have reached the place where the knowledgeable minds in intercollegiate baseball are more aware of our program than our own community is. Our major goal is to 'bring a regional tournament to this area and only the fans can make that happen through their regular season support. "I mean fans, not spectators. A fan gets the enjoyment of having a position of influence on the success of the team. He participates in the program via attendance at the games, contributions to the fund-raising campaign or sponsorships. That must happen for us to continue to grow and then fans will receive what 250-plus players have received from this program. Our responsibility to the 6 community is to influence the young people and teach them that you don't get something unless you get involved. "The city has made its commitment with the lighting and the Youth Sports Complex, which will provide permanent grandstands for the football and baseball fields. If Orange County is the powerful community it is reputed to be, it will get involved, too, liVehave to make it fun to come to the ballpark to let the fans take advantage of what's available to them. In this area we get caught up in so many things to see and do but how many people really reap the benefits of commitment and involvement? We are offering that opportunity. " ASSISTANT COACHES Pitching coach Dave Snow is in his second stint as an assistant to head coach Augie Garrido at Cal State Fullerton. Snow, 33, originally came to Fullerton in 1973 with Garrido and was largely responsible for recruiting the' athletes that would eventually win the national championship in 1979. He left Fullerton in 1978 to become head coach at Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys where he posted a 156-41 record in five seasons. He won four conference titles and the 1982 -..IMiI! ..... =!!!::t~ state championship. Snow, who is single and lives in Placentia, is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. . Chris Smith Infield and outfield coach Chris Smith is in his second year at Fullerton under coach Augie Garrido. Smith, 25, is a graduate of UCLA where he was an All-Pac 10 for Gary Adams. He played one year at Oklaho- ma State and one year at Los Angeles Valley College where he was all-Metro Conference and All-State under coach Dave Snow. Smith remained at Valley and was an assistant on Snow's 1982 state championship team. All-American honors were accorded Smith as a first base- man at Long Beach Wilson High School, where he also played varsity basketball. Smith and his wife Carol live in Fullerton. Bill Hughes Defensive coach Bill Hughes is new to Augie Garrido's staff for 1984. Hughes, 28, is a 1978 graduate of La Verne University where he was a four-year letterman and played on two NAIA teams. A two-time all-conference selec- tion, he was drafted by Minnesota in June of 1974 out of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, where he won AII-CIF honors. Hughes was an assistant for three years at La Verne before taking the head job at Hutchinson Community College in Kan- sas. There he compiled a 40-44 record and won the 1983 conference championship. He also coached during the sum- mer for the Hutchinson Broncs semi-pro team. Hughes is single and lives in La Verne. 7 1984 ROSTER

The essential information 'for the first edition of "Top Twenty Baseball Coaches" was acquired by Doug Gerlach in 1971-72 while assistant sports information director at Arizona State. The formula is simple but proven. The twenty head coaches currently active at Division I colleges who have won the most games are derived from records of the schools and the NCAA, then listed in the order of winning percentage. Compiled by Elmore "Scoop" Hudgins. RECORD BY OPPONENT (Garrido Era Only) School Record Pet. School Record Pet. d LEW CRYER Executive Officer 1700 E. Dyer Road, Suite 140, Santa Ana, CA 92705 (714) 979-0353 The Southern California Baseball Association becomes a misnomer of sorts in 1984 with its first out-of-state member - Nevada-Las Vegas - replacing charter member Cal State Los Angeles, which de-emphasized its program to the Division II level. The Rebels have been a very successful Division I independent under coach Fred Dallimore over the years and will provide even more strength for one of the country's toughest baseball alignments. For the past two years, two SCBA teams have advanced to post-season play. In 1982 it was Pepperdine and Fullerton in separate regionals and the Titans advanced to the College World Series. Last year, UC Santa Barbara and Fullerton were eliminated in West I and West II regional play. SCBA DIRECTORY School SID Address Phone Cal State Fullerton Mel Franks 800 N.
