This and the presence of the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe-Scotland ridge (GIFR) are likely to have a major impact on the diversity and distribution of the benthic fauna there. Biodiversity in this region is also under increasing threat from climate-induced changes, ocean warming and acidification in particular, affecting the marine realm. The aim of the present study was to investigate the biodiversity and distributional patterns of amphipod crustaceans in Icelandic waters and how it relates to environmental variables and depth. A comprehensive data set from the literature and recent expeditions was compiled constituting distributional records for 355 amphipod species across a major depth gradient (18–3,700 m). Spatial variation of the arthropod communities of the alga Halopteris scoparia in relation to the influence of environ eusss------ ~ 7# --a... cz;-&is mental factors in the Algeciras Bay (Southern Spain) was investigated by means of multivariate analyses. We have been able to determine a clear separation in composition of communities between external and internal areas of the bay, with hydrodynamism and algal morphology being the most determinant factors. In the external zone a greater number of species appear, whose quantitative dominances are more even than among the species of the internal zone, where some clearly dominate over the others, e.g., the amphipods Corophium acutum and Jassa marmorata. Crus taceans show in a clear way the differences among the localities and are useful in characterization studies of envi ronmental quality of coastal waters because of the abundance, high species richness and the wide environmental spectrum in the epiphytic communities ADDITIONAL INDEX WORDS: Epifau.na. enoironmental factors, hydrodynamism, sedimentation. -

SPECIES OF CONSERVATION CONCERN Four amphipods are currently noted of conservation concern in the UK and are listed as priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plans (UKBAP): 1. Lagoon Sand-shrimp (Gammarus insensibilis ) - a lagoon specialist restricted to the Fleet (Dorset) and New England Creek (Essex). 2. Cave Shrimp ( Niphargus glenniei ) – found in interstitial ground-water, caves, wells, springs, and river gravels in Devon and Cornwall. 3. Sea Piglet Shrimp (Arrhis phyllonyx ) – an arctic species reaching its southern limit in Scotland in the Orkneys and also in the Fladen Grounds off N.E. Scotland. 1 4. Gitanopsis bispinosa – previously known only from a single record off Blackwaterfoot, Arran. Moore (1984) examined this specimen and determined it to be Gitana sarsi . Hence there are now no confirmed records of G. bispinosa ever being in British waters. It should be removed from the UKBAP list. Several amphipod species are known worldwide only from British waters (eg. Lysianassa insperata, Nannonyx spinimanus, Stenothoe setosa, Microprotopus longimanus ) but it is likely that they are simply under recorded and their real distributions are more extensive.
