SECOND HALF: After finishing the first half in second place, 5.5 games back of the Long Island Ducks with a 31-29 Record, Southern Maryland storms into the second half. The Blue Crabs began the second half 2-1 before dropping four CRABS FACTS Straight. Now, having won six straight, the Blue Crabs look to continue their hot streak in their longest homestand of the 2nd Half in North Division: T-1st 2021 season. Despite have two postponements already in the homestand, it’s still the longest homestand of the year Overall: 39-36 (11 games). After having their six game win streak (tied for longest of season) snapped in a 19-5 loss to Long Island and then 1st Half: 31-29 dropping another, SOMD stomped Long Island in a series finale, winning 13-2 thanks to David Harris’s career day. The 2nd Half: 8-7 cleanup man did just that, crushing three homers and seven RBI, both of which tie SOMD franchise records. Now, facing GA/GB 0.0 GB the West Virginia Power who like the Blue Crabs have come out of the gates hot in the second half but also need to keep Home: 19-15 winning for a playoff bid. This is the last matchup between West Virginia and Southern Maryland on the season, in WV’s Road: 20-21 first season in the Atlantic League. Day: 7-7 Night: 32-29 COMING HOME: After a year off in 2020, the Blue Crabs return to baseball was spent primarily on the road. The Blue Current Streak: W1 Crabs play just 25 of their 60 first half games at home, but will play 35 of their 60 second half games at home. This will be Last 5 Games: 3-2 Headlined by a season high 12 game homestand running from August 13th through August 26th. Last 10 Games: 6-4 Series Openers: 18-7 ALPB/MLB RULE CHANGES: Double Hook Rule: This “Double-Hook” rule would be a compromise, of sorts. It Series Finales: 11-13 utilizes the DH spot that has been in effect in the American League since 1973. But once a team’s starting is replaced, Sweeps/Swept: 3/1 the pitching spot takes over the DH spot in the batting order. So from that point on, the team would be required to either 1st Half Series Won/Lost/Tie. 8/9/2 nd use a pinch-hitter in that spot or let the relief pitcher bat. The impetus behind this idea is to incentivize teams to push their 2 Half Series Won/Lost/Tie. 2/3/1 starters deeper into games. Nearly 90% of pitching starts in the 2020 MLB season lasted less than seven innings. The Score First: 27-13 increasingly early use of relievers -- including the use of the “opener” strategy – diminishes the role of the starter. Yet there Score more than 3: 34-11 is widespread agreement that having identifiable starters -- workhorses around whom fans schedule their viewership or Score 3 or fewer: 5-25 attendance -- is good for the sport Plus, lovers of the NL rules would still get the best of both worlds. BC hit 1+ home : 28-19 MOVING THE PITCHING RUBBER (SECOND HALF ONLY) Baseball’s dedicated distance from the rubber to the rear of home One Run Games: 9-9 plate has been 60 feet, 6 inches since 1893. So the new Atlantic League distance of 61 feet, 6 inches will be considered by Two Run Games: 3-5 some to be an audacious expansion -- one small step for , one giant leap for baseball itself. But several factors Out-Hit Opp: 28-11 contribute to the idea of adjusting that seemingly sacred space between pitcher and batter. First and foremost, Major No Errors: 12-12 League strikeout rates have risen every season since 2005 (the league-wide K rate was 16.4% in ’05 and was 24.9% through Extra Innings: 1-2 Monday’s play). Having roughly one-quarter of all plate appearances end in a strikeout is generally agreed to be detrimental Extra Innings (Road): 0-2 to the game’s entertainment value. The strikeouts increase is in part due to a dramatic increase in velocity (the average Extra Innings (Home): 1-0 four-seam fastball speed thus far in 2021 is 93.6 mph, versus a 91.9 mph average in 2008). Additionally, research by The BLUE CRABS vs WV Ringer found that modern MLB pitchers, weighted by workload, are more than four inches taller, on average, than they Extra innings Total: 0-0 2021 Record: 4-3 were when the 60’6” distance was implemented in 1893. All of which is to say that professional baseball may have 2021 Home vs. WV: 2-1 arguably outgrown 60’6”. Moving the pitching rubber back a foot will provide batters with more time to react to pitches, 2021 @ WV: 2-2 potentially improving contact rates and thereby injecting more action into the game. MLB found that the reaction time on Current Streak: W1 a 93.3 mph fastball (the average four-seam velocity in 2020) thrown from 61’6” is equivalent to a 91.6 mph fastball (about the average fastball velo in 2011) thrown from 60’6”. MLB also determined that a 12-inch increase would be the minimum interval needed to evaluate a change in mound distance. While a larger increase in the distance was considered, the g oal is to make a change without disruption or added injury risk. late-inning managerial strategy they desire. So the “Double-Hook” takes the best of both leagues and blends it all together.

ALEX THE GREAT: After beginning the 2021 season in a supplementary role, Alex Crosby has become a mainstay in a lethal Southern Maryland lineup. Once moving into the starting role, Crosby embarked on a 17 game hit streak from 6/15 through 7/2, the Longest by a Blue Crabs batter since 2013, and the third longest in the Atlantic League in 2021. Crosby proceeded to go on another double digit hit streak, 10, from 7/28 through 8/8. More recently, from 8/12-8/14 Crosby went on a three game streak, compiling 10 RBI in that span.

TURNAROUND: After struggling to begin the 2021 season primarily in a relief role, 2014 Tampa Bay Rays fourth round draft pick, Blake Bivens has completely reinvented himself. The right-hander allowed 28 earned runs through his first 16.1 innings of the season, but has allowed just three earned runs over his last 26.1 innings. Patrick Baker has seen a massive turnaround as well since moving primarily into a middle relief role. The former Orioles prospect struggled to begin the season, posting a 14.14 ERA in the months of May and June combined and posting a 3.29 WHIP. Since July 1st, however, Baker has become a budding star in the Blue Crabs pitching staff. Since July 1st, in 11G, Baker’s statline is: --12 app, 1.74 ERA, 20.2 IP, 13H, 6R, 4ER, 16BB, 25K

HOT AT THE RIGHT TIME: After beginning the second half of the season 2-5, Southern Maryland has turned it around to win six of their last eight second half games, and seven of their last nine overall. The two losses came in consecutive order to the Long Island Ducks on 8/20 and 8/21, but after winning the series finale and the ALPB North Second Half leading Lancaster Barnstormers being swept by the West Virginia Power, Southern Maryland is now tied for first place in the Atlantic League North Division in the Second Half. The Blue Crabs pitching has been fantastic all year, still ranking in the top three in ERA. It’s the hitting that has turned a corner of late. From the beginning of the season through 7/18, Southern Maryland held a team batting average of a league worst .255 (.010 behind 7th). But, since 7/19, Southern Maryland is hitting a league best .309 as a team (0.20 points better than 2nd place) with a league best .499 SLG. During Southern Maryland’s 7-2 stretch, they are hitting a league best .354 as a team (0.52 better than second place) with a league best 19 HR, a league best 74 runs scored (10 more than the next), a league best .607 SLG (.112 better than second) and a league best 1.035 OPS (.140 better than second).

LAST GAME: (Waldorf, MD, August 22, 2021) After falling to the Long Island Ducks in the opening two games of the series, Southern Maryland looked to rebound, sending Daryl Thompson (W, 9-2) to the mound. Thompson shined this afternoon, but it was David Harris who stole the show in the Blue Crabs 13-2 win. After Vin Mazzaro (L, 1-5) pitched a scoreless first inning, the Blue Crabs struck first in the bottom of the second. David Harris led off the inning with a solo home run down the right field line, giving Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, the Blue Crabs rallied again. With runners on first and second, Cesar Trejo drove a single into center field, scoring Matt Hibbert. Then, Harris drove in Michael Baca with another base hit, extending the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, Josh McAdams doubled to deep center field, scoring Harris and Alex Crosby, putting the Blue Crabs up 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Harris came through again. With Trejo on first base, Harris belted a two-run home run over the mini monster in left field, blowing the game open and giving Southern Maryland a 7-0 advantage. In the sixth inning, Trejo blasted a home run of his own over the wall in left-center field, adding an insurance run for the Blue Crabs. The Ducks rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. These runs were the only blemish for Thompson, who dominated in eight innings of work. In the eighth inning, Chris Reed entered the game for the Ducks but struggled to contain the Southern Maryland bats. With the bases loaded, Trejo lined a single into center field, scoring two runs, and extending the lead to 10-2. Harris, the next batter, hammered his third home run of the game, over the left-center field wall, putting the Blue Crabs on top 13-2. Harris tied a pair of franchise records on Sunday, with three homers and seven RBI. His three home runs tie a franchise record (Casey Benjamin, 2011), as do his seven RBI (Rubi Silva, 2021). After eight outstanding innings from Thompson, Endrys Briceno shut the door in the ninth, solidifying Southern Maryland’s 13-2 win. The Blue Crabs look to continue their winning ways at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday night.

FOUR IS THE WINNING SCORE: Incredibly, the magic number for Southern Maryland this season has been four runs. When the Blue Crabs have scored four or more runs in a game in 2021, their record is 34-11. The Southern Maryland scored three runs or less, their record is 5-25.

SHUTOUT SEASON: The Blue Crabs have a chance at breaking the Atlantic League record for shutouts in a season (14) which was set by the Long Island Ducks in 2019. Southern Maryland currently has seven shutouts on the season, three of which have come against the Ducks. This includes back-to-back shutouts on 8/1 and 8/3, and a 26.2 inning shutout streak that extended into the ninth inning of a game on 8/4.

ALPB PITCHER OF THE MONTH: The cliché “aging like a fine wine” is no longer worthy of what Daryl Thompson has done late in his career. After winning ALPB Pitcher of the Year in 2019, he set new personal bests in season wins, complete games, shutouts, strikeouts, innings pitched, game started, strikeouts to walks ratio, a career low in walks per nine innings pitched, as well as issuing just 27 walks in nearly 200 innings. After a full year off, the 35 year old La Plata was named the ALPB Pitcher of the Month (May/June). During that stretch, he went 4-1 with 3.35 ERA, in six starts. In May/June, the MLB veteran led (among qualifiers) the ALPB in WHIP (1.05), held the fourth best ERA (3.35), most innings pitched (T-1st), most wins (T-1st), fewest walks issued (4), capped it off with a one run CG vs York on 6/27.
