The Audition Process

Why Audition?

What are we looking for?

The students do not have to be excellent in all three areas of Musical Theatre, but we would like to see experience and potential from their audition. A BWS+ student will also embody these qualities: • Confident – Confident at performing, not afraid to try new things and an excellent communicator. • Independent & Collaborative – Is excellent at working both independently and working together with an ensemble. • Passionate – Is passionate about Musical Theatre & performing arts. • Hard Working – Is able to work incredibly hard throughout a 15 Week course

Audition Results

We assure that all students will receive a decision on their audition and placement within 7 working days of applying for the course. It is incredibly important to audition early as the places will start to be filled as soon as auditions are open. Students will receive one of 4 results from our auditions: • Confirmed Place – Student is accepted into the class. Parents can secure the place through payment. • List – Students on the understudy list will be offered a space if there are any spaces available two weeks before the class start. • Recall – We may need students to re-record or perform another item to further assess their ability before we can make a final decision. • Future Star – If a student is a future star their audition for this round is unsuccessful and we will issue feedback to students on how to gain more experience so they can apply again in future. (At Sing’theatre Academy we truly believe in nurturing the talents of every student and see the potential in every individual. BWS+ however is a specific class designed for higher level students. Because of this not every student will be ready for the class even if they are a current student of Sing’theatre Academy.)

Audition Material FAQ

Video Introduction

The video introduction is a chance for the audition panel to get to know the student’s personality and find out a little about their past experience. The video should be natural and honest and feel free to talk briefly about past performing and training experiences.

Songs

Follow the below tips to make sure your singing audition meets the criteria. • Learn the lyrics off by heart • Act the song & remember that in musical theatre singing, acting is just as important as the singing technique. • Avoid dancing or too many “actions” in your physical performance • Choose an age appropriate song • Make sure the sound and video quality is clear • Find a good quality backing track on YouTube, Spotify or iTunes to perform with if you do not have the ability to perform with piano. • If students would prefer to send a snippet of a solo performance from the last 12 months that meets the criteria this is also acceptable. • The recording should be a whole body shot to see the whole actor

Monologues

You are required to select one of the monologues to learn for the audition. Please choose a monologue from the appropriate category. • We are happy for actors to play different gendered roles. • Learn the monologue off by heart • Perform and physicalise the monologue. • The recording should be a whole body shot to see the whole actor. • Speak clearly but with emotion

Recording

Record your videos showing the performers full body. Make sure each individual element is a separate video. Upload to a file sharing site such as Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, or YouTube as you will need to share the links to each file when submitting the audition. Please the office if you require any help.

Setting Evan is mentally writing himself one last letter reflecting on the impact he has had on his community and finally accepts himself. Monologue Dear, Evan Hansen. Today is going to be a good day, and here's why; because today no matter what else, you are you. So no hiding. No lying. Just you, and that's enough. Maybe someday... everything that happens. Will feel like a distant memory? Maybe someday no one will even remember about the Connor Project, or me. But maybe someday some other kid will be standing here, staring out at the trees feeling so alone. Wondering if maybe the world might look different from all the way up there. Better? And then maybe he'll start climbing one branch at a time, and then he'll keep going! Even when it seems like he can't find another foothold. Even when it feels hopeless like everything is telling him to let go. This time, this time he won't let go. He'll just hold on. He'll hold on and he'll keep going. Keep going until he sees the sun.

But this has got to be about more than just revenge and the vicarious thrill of stringing someone up who can’t defend herself. And I may just be in love with her. But I made a promise up there. A promise that from this day forward, no man would be denied his essential humanity due to the condition of his pocketbook. That no man in need would be ignored by another with the means to help him. Here and now, from this day forward, because of you, you, and you, we will look into the faces of our fellow men and see not only a brother, but a sister as well.
